RE: 2019 NCAA Baseball Regionals
Boshamer is a great college baseball setting and the seating is well. Parking should not be an issue now but if you do park in a spot where you should not be count on getting a ticket and they are not cheap. I am picking Liberty to come out on top but you never know.

RE: 2019 NCAA Baseball Regionals
I can't find the article, but the last time I went to a UNCW-UNC game at Chapel Hill, Mike Fox complained about how loud the UNCW fans were compared to the many UNC fans in attendance. A "Sea!!! Hawks!!!" chant that went unanswered in the 8th inning was mentioned in particular.

Who started that chant? This guy. lol.

Yes, I'm still proud of that insignificant event.

I was there for a good few games there. Isn't that when Elon was in our regional as well and we had a huge comeback?

No this was a regular season game that we lost 4-2. I haven't been able to attend any of the Regionals in the years where we went to Chapel Hill/Cary. Only Raleigh and Greenville. That will change this year, as I'll be there on Saturday and Sunday.

The Regional you're talking about was 2008 in Cary, when we reached the Regional Final against UNC. We'd beaten Elon 5-2 then lost to UNC 5-1, facing Elon again in an elimination game. Elon had an 11-4 lead in the top of the 9th inning, and we put up 11 runs to win 15-11. This was that inning's play-by-play:

UNC Wilmington 9th - Rooney singled to center field (2-2). French pinch
hit for Hill, A.. French flied out to rf (1-0). Hargrave singled to shortstop
(1-1); Rooney advanced to second. Appel singled to right field, RBI (1-1);
Hargrave advanced to second; Rooney scored. Carver singled to left field, RBI
(1-2); Appel advanced to second; Hargrave scored. Hall, N. doubled down the lf
line, 2 RBI (0-0); Carver scored; Appel scored. Girdwood to p for Kernodle.
Leeper singled up the middle, RBI (3-1); Hall, N. scored. Miller, R. walked
(3-1); Leeper advanced to second. Snyder walked (3-1); Miller, R. advanced to
second; Leeper advanced to third. Locklear pinch ran for Snyder. Rooney singled
up the middle, 2 RBI (2-1); Locklear advanced to second; Miller, R. scored;
Leeper scored. French doubled to right center, 2 RBI (0-2); Rooney scored;
Locklear scored. Holt, M. pinch ran for French. Jones to p for Girdwood.
Hargrave singled through the left side, RBI, advanced to second on the throw
(0-0); Holt, M. scored. Hargrave advanced to third on a wild pitch. Appel
popped up to ss (2-2). Hargrave scored on a wild pitch. Carver struck out
swinging (3-2). 11 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors, 0 LOB.

Simply amazing. We had 1 on with 1 out. Then 8 hits and 2 walks later and 11 runs were in. There weren't even any errors. Just pure offense that got us the W and advanced us to the Regional Final.

Correct. Boshamer Stadium was getting renovated, so UNC played their entire home schedule at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary that year, and that's where their Regional took place as well.

RE: 2019 NCAA Baseball Regionals
I know numbers can basically be thrown out when a Regional setting comes around, but here's some W-L records of interest anyways. For whatever they're worth.

UNC's home record in 2019: 31-6

Road records:

* Tennessee: 7-9
* Liberty: 12-13
* UNCW: 11-12

Neutral records:

* Tennessee: 4-1
* Liberty: 5-1
* UNCW: 4-1

Non-Conference Records and SOS:

* UNC: 21-4 (# 52)
* Tennessee: 14-16 (# 82)
* Liberty: 22-9 (# 120)
* UNCW: 16-16 (# 161)

Based on this information, Tennessee isn't all that impressive as a 2-seed. Liberty, however, is a quality 3-seed.

How do we rank compared to other 4 seeds? I gotta think we would be one of the better 4 seeds

I saw Liberty play twice this year and they are very good. But having seen all the history and stats from 08 my prediction for a Liberty win there is pretty damn shaky.

Based on RPI, we're actually middle of the pack:

1. Jacksonville St. (37-21): # 89
2. Cincinnati (30-29): # 96
3. Harvard (27-14): # 100
4. Mercer (35-27): # 107
5. Sacramento St. (39-23): # 117
6. Ohio State (35-25): # 126
7. Fordham (38-22): # 135
8. Stony Brook (31-21): # 138
9. UNCW (32-29): # 147
10. Army (35-24): # 150
11. Quinnipiac (29-27): # 177
12. Central Connecticut (30-21): # 183
13. UIC (28-21): # 187
14. Omaha (31-22-1): # 198
15. Southern (32-22): # 206
16. Florida A&M (27-32): # 235

Obviously RPI doesn't do a great job of adding extra weight to games played later in the season, so take these rankings with a grain of salt. Nor does it take into account retiring coaches, lol.

You also have to factor in that Coach Scalf has NEVER gone down 0-2 at a regional. We've won at least one game in every Regional we've been in, regardless of what seed we entered as. So we may well be the most dangerous 4-seed in the nation.

On a side note, wouldn't it be cool if 4-seed Omaha reached the College World Series? Every game there would be like a home game.

RE: 2019 NCAA Baseball Regionals
Expanding on Coach Scalf's success at the Regionals:

* Scalf's overall record at Regionals: 15-18
* Regional Championship Appearances: 6 (2003, 2004, 2008, 2015, 2016, 2018)
* Elimination of host team: 1 (ECU, 2018)

The takeaway? At least one of the other teams in this Regional is in trouble, if not all 3. Because its highly unlikely we go down without eliminating at least one other team. We've done it before, even as a 4-seed.

We've been one of the last 48 teams standing in all 8 of our Regional Appearances, and one of the Final 32 in 5 of them. If this were the NCAA Basketball Tournament, it would be the equivalent of Coach Scalf winning a 1st round game 5 out of 8 times. We build our roster in such a way that we're ready for this, and Scalf preps our team every year for success in a Regional.

And Scalf accomplished all of this with one of the smallest budgets in the nation (LSU's for instance, is 10 times bigger -- we've faced them in a Regional Final twice), and a program that still isn't fully funded, unlike most of his perennial NCAA Tournament counterparts.

Not too shabby.

It's my understanding that our fans were mistreated because of their enthusiastic cheering. This time at JMU. I wasn't there, but I have been at a number of venues thru the years. This has been a problem for us that truly do not understand. I have never witnessed our fan base being nasty. Overall, our fan base has been complemented be other fan bases. It it puzzling how we have been singled out by the regimes of Yeager and Yeager 2.0.

Most college baseball fans outside of SEC country suck. They just want to sit on their hands during a baseball game and be quiet. It's a shock to system when a passionate fanbase invades their park. They're not ready for it.

It's the main reason why our fans have a much better time in a great college baseball environment like LSU. There's mutual respect at places like that, for the most part.

We have always had pretty awesome atmospheres at games, particularly important ones.

The 2006 championship with VCU was incredible. The crowd willed that team to a championship

Could be outside the SEC or could just be that's what you deal with in Whine n Cheese country. Hell, i know Tarheel fans that complain about the whine n cheesers that sit close and sit quietly during basketball games.

That 2006 team was loaded. Hatcher, Raynor, Poulk, Brad Holt (who had a terrific freshman year), etc.

We underachieved a bit in the regular season but damn if we didn't come through with the title in an "up year" for the CAA.

That was the year I really fell in love with the UNCW Baseball program. The 2003 title season was before my time as a student, and I only started coming to games midway through that 2005 season. But '06 was when I started to realize just how special this program was and what it could be.

RE: 2019 NCAA Baseball Regionals
My guess is UNC will throw their Friday guy at us. That would be junior righty Tyler Baum. In 14 starts, Baum is 7-3 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 88 K's and 24 BB's over 81.1 IP. Opponents have hit .259 against him.

At the ACC Tournament in Durham, Baum went 7.1 innings against Virginia, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2. He also faced a batter in relief 4 days later against Georgia Tech and got him out.

Outside of Baum, starting pitching hasn't been a huge strength for UNC compared to other elite teams in the country. They're more reliant on timely hitting and a solid bullpen.

UNC's defense is a little suspect too. They've committed 72 errors as a team (.967 fielding %) compared to 63 for opponents (.970). Middle infielder Ike Freeman and 3B Ashton McGee have been the biggest culprits, with 12 errors apiece and fielding % of .931 and .910, respectively. Freshman middle infielder Danny Serretti and another infielder, Dylan Enwiler, have 9 errors apiece as well.
