RE: College Hoops Coaching Carousel (2019)
Excellent article from the Detroit Free Press on Michigan's search, hiring process and selection of Howard. Much as UC fans were concerned with the risk/reward matrix when hiring a former star player, that was a factor in Ann Arbor as well. As with most hiring decisions, time will tell if star power trumps deeper collegiate coaching experience.

It will have immediate "star" factor appeal, but reality is they lost one of the best coaches in the game. Howard has big shoes to fill and limited coaching experience.

Great analysis; I think he had Michigan on a pathway to a national championship and from all reports to date, was doing it with integrity.
I happened to be in the Ann Arbor area on business the day the story broke. I had dinner with a longtime friend there who is a big Michigan fan. Shock and disappointment for sure.
Of course the difference between their situation and ours is every decision can be made with an open checkbook at an iconic P5 heavyweight.
Maybe we'll get that basketball series with the Wolverines now that both schools have changed coaches? I was never sure the "rest of the story" on Michigan's cancellation of the game here. The flimsy excuse was that it was their exam week. That doesn't hold water--universities know semester schedules years in advance and the game could have been moved within the season or to the following year.

Michigan AD also hired local favorite Kevin Ollie at UConn.
I'll let the historians decide on how that turned out. National Championship to be forced out four years later amongst violations and lawsuits.

Well, I'm sure if he gets in there and starts cheating... I mean, "recruiting" like Penny is doing, he'll be alright for a few years.

Unlike any Fab 5 members I am not aware of any situation where Penny ever cheated in his career.
I'm happy he is doing so well there as this elevates our conference. Hopefully he is doing it clean.

Exactly as long as they’re doing it the right way.. everyone complains that our conference foes are weak and they need to step up. Memphis does and we automatically assume they’re cheating even though Penny had relationships with most of these kids prior to getting the job. Congrats to them. Hopefully they join us and Houston as top dogs.

The AAC isn't weak. It has had some lean years recently, but last year was pretty solid and that with Memphis and UCONN down and out. With both of them coming back, along with WSU rebounding, and UH and UC, the AAC should finally get 4-5 teams in annually like we all thought they would when the conference started. If McKie gets Temple back, it will be even deeper.

Bohn made a comment that Beilein had no desire to play UC. Beilien and Mick apparently had a not so favorable call where, Beilein said playing UC provided them with no benefit. He felt Mich was out of UC's league. Was told this conversation sent Mick through the roof.

If true, that definitely sours my perception of Beilien, a guy I've always respected. Seems like he would appreciate what Mick was doing here running a clean program. And historically, Michigan and Cincinnati basketball aren't far apart. If he thought playing us was beneath him, then he's either arrogant or a coward.

Regardless of intention, it comes off as sour grapes when our fans and fans of other AAC schools make baseless accusations towards Memphis because of their recruiting success. Until/unless it comes out later that there is shady stuff going on, let's enjoy the positive attention having a top recruiting class in our league brings us and settle everything else on the court.

Sour grapes? Cynic? So be it.
In this day and age, pretty much any D1 basketball program is first class. They're ALL cool. Hence, there are no built in recruiting advantages for anyone anymore.
In my world, college coaches are guilty until proven innocent. There are no more great "recruiters" who just get players because they sold them on their program.
So when some guy comes in and sets the world on fire immediately, yeah, call me skeptical.
Remember when Hugh Freeze came in at Ole Miss and all of the sudden started getting top recruits? He was the cat's meow for a few years... and he was cheating his a$$ off.
Tell me Calipari, a KNOWN cheater, isn't cheating at... KENTUCKY ????
Lets see here... Louisville cheats, Arizona cheats, LSU cheats, Auburn cheats, UNC cheats, Syracuse cheats, Michigan cheats... I could go on.
Memphis cheated in '08, … but they're not doing it now? Especially with how neck deep Penny was involved in the sleazy AAU world?
Sampson cheated at Oklahoma... AND IU. ...But he's not cheating now.
Heck, angelic ol' coach Krizooski cheats. You know he does.
And why not? Nothing ever happens to them.
Obviously it doesn't bother me that much, I still watch it. But don't sit there and tell me Penny "has no record" of cheating... in his year and half long career.

Sour grapes? IDK about that. I think it’s just a healthy dose of skepticism given the recent climate of the recruiting goings-on for blue chippers in this day and age. I mean- how dare we assume?
