How are they even coming close to recruiting as well as our southern schools? Population? Who wants to play in an empty stadium on a weeknight?

I had a hypothesis that the MAC would see the most negative impact of all the new Southern FBS programs over the last decade (App/the two GSUs/Charlotte/Liberty/ODU/South Alabama/Coastal).

My thinking was the MAC recruits FL/GA but those G5 level talents in the area would rather stay closer to home and would forego going to the Midwest to play in GA, the Carolinas or VA instead. I dont know if that has panned out but it certainly seems possible.

Maybe there's simply enough talent in the region that doesn't get poached?

Here in Texas we obviously have a ton of talent but we also have schools from all over the country coming here to recruit so now Texas, OU, and A&M have to compete with Ohio State, Bama, Clemson, ND, USC, and Oregon for top tier recruits, not to mention the emergence of TCU and Baylor. So now us G5s have less "3 stars" to work with.

95th? Are they aware that UAB won 11 games last year? And their conference? And their bowl game? You'd think these things alone would boost them up quite a bit 01-wingedeagle

I do not know how many exceptions they were able to have but reatarting their program allowed to have extra time to have non qualifiers qualify. Just a tad of an advantage and I am not sure how it played out for them but the first two years (I believe) had this as a booster shot by the NCAA.

#95 UAB

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/c...story.html

It'll probably be a few weeks or so before we see another Sun Belt team listed.

UAB plays South Alabama this season in Birmingham September 21.

I'm looking forward to the UAB game. I want to see how many South fans will go up to Birmingham. Maybe UAB and Southern Miss could turn into a out of conference rivals for us. I'm hoping we can get a win vs them being they did lose around 35 players to graduation.

The have 8 returning starters on offense and 5 on defense. That's hardly losing your entire team....

Well, they had 35 seniors on their squad last year. A lot of them had waivers to let them play being in their mid 20s.

I wonder how they arrived at those numbers. I just took a quick look at their starting lineup in their bowl game and there are only four offensive players and three defensive players returning from that group.

Gotcha. I suppose they might aggregate their starters (i.e. if you started at least one game).

RE: 2019 Orlando Sentinel Countdown
I think the biggest effects UAB will feel is lack of depth, lack of experience, they lost some leadership, and replacing 6 starters on defense.

They graduated A LOT of depth. That may hurt the most as the season wears on.

Usually its who starts the most games. Houston recently had a QB who played the 1st 6 games but was then benched. The QB who started the last 5 games and was one of the conference newcomers of the year wasn't counted as a returning starter although it was a given he would start the next year
