RE: ACC Network
The big surprise in the ACC's TV announcement yesterday is that there will continue to be FB, MBB and WBB games via RSN's (Regional Sports Networks...now to be owned by Sinclair Communications). I think most figured the RSN outlets for ACC games would go away with the new ACC Network.

Matt Sarzyniak reports from the ACC's Public Relations Director for Football, Kevin Best...

...17 FB, 43 MBB, and 36 WBB games will appear this upcoming school year via RSN's.

Works for me. 04-cheers

Somebody more familiar with the ACC's TV rights ... isn't this just Tier 3?

----> ESPNU/ACCN

I don't think so. For starters, ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/ACCN can all be bundled into one big ESPN as the ACC's partner. The RSN games will be controlled by the conference, not the individual schools. Raycom likely still has a part to play in it and ESPN ultimately controls it all. They can contract/farm these out while owning.

The label "Tier 3" has been misused and misinterpreted so much over the last decade it is difficult to even figure out its meaning anymore, but when I think of "Tier 3" I think what is in control by the individual schools and separate from the ACC's contracts. Obvious example would be radio rights. Because RSN broadcasts will be controlled and scheduled by the ACC just like they've been in the past (along with the syndicated ACC Network/Jefferson Pilot/Lincoln Financial/etc. days), they don't really fit the moniker of "Tier 3" in my opinion.

This more reflective of reality?

-> ABC National
---> ESPN/ESPN2/ACCN/ESPNU/ACCRSN ... in that pick order? (I wonder which has first pick between ACCN and ESPNU?)

I think you're close, but I don't think it's Raycom...

Keep in mind that the RAMs were owned by Fox, which sold them to ESPN, which then sold them to Sinclair.

Fair enough. My inclusion of Raycom Sports is that it still exists and will still have a relationship with the ACC from a production perspective.

From their website... http://raycomsports.com/raycom-sports-en...f-another/

While over-the-air syndication of ACC football and basketball has concluded, the relationship with ACC is not ending. Raycom Sports will continue to manage ACC digital platforms, social media channels, gaming and mobile apps and the ACC Digital Network. In addition, Raycom Sports will serve as a production vendor for ESPN and the new ACC Network.

Another nugget from Matt Sarzyniak...

ACC RSN games are going to stick around thru 2026-27. That athletic year became the end of the ACC rights deal when it was extended due to the additions of Pitt & Syracuse. When ACCN was announced, ACC rights agreement added 10 more years, but the RSN agreement wasn't extended.

It sounds like this will be used instead of a second linear ACC channel as is the case with the other conference networks. I have no idea whether this is a good or a bad idea. It’s just different.

It sounds like the ACC was able to buy out Raycom by keeping them around for the ACC digital network, and ultimately to subcontract production of some events on ACCN also.

Not so with the RSN's, apparently. ESPN may or may not have owned the rights before DoJ ordered them to sell it. Perhaps Sinclair wanted those games, even? IDK.

I believe that the Fox RSN's deal was with Raycom and perhaps they were not interested in being bought out at that time. As you suggest, though, addressing it as part of Disney's purchase of Fox should have been possible. Perhaps Disney feared that buying the rights back would trigger more DOJ scrutiny about competitive effects that Disney sought to avoid. The RSN games tend to be lesser games -- last pick before games get moved to ACCN Extra -- so it would not have been worth taking any risk.

I would also note that ESPN has encouraged the ACC to spread its games with FCS opponents throughout the season. The Fox RSNs picked after ESPN and Raycom, with no better than fourth or fifth pick. It seems likely they are going to get stuck with several of these FCS opponent games, as they are in the first two weeks of the season. Perhaps ESPN didn't reclaim these rights as part of the larger Fox deal because the price the Fox RSNs is paying for these games is so favorable given how weak the package is likely to be.

I'm actually cool with it. It is a chance for more casual fans to check out a game. I can count on my hand the number of times I watched something on the BTN. I'm more likely to watch a game on an RSN. I don't know why...but it happens.

RE: ACC Network
I hate the continued existence of the ACC on RSNs, but those were games that Raycom sold to Fox. The ACC had ESPN designate a certain number of games to Raycom, who turned around and sold them to Fox, just taking a cut to be a middle man.

I'm guessing it just wasn't worth buying them back. Maybe a good business decision, I don't know. They may have well looked at the slate and said that those weren't going to move the needle in forcing people to pick up the ACCN, at least relative to the cost to buy them back.

I don't like the fact that it complicates knowing where to find basketball games and they won't be available on WatchESPN (although replays will). But I do like the idea that we didn't have to spend money to get them back. It at least reduces the real cost of the stupid Raycom set aside, if those weren't considered to be high revenue games or ACCN demand drivers.

Well then we can have an objective quantification of who is the cellar of the league. If your football team is playing OTA you're it. The Raycom broadcast is now going to be the badge of shame ... a media version of a dunce cap.

And this is something new? In the past it would be ESPN3 or nothing...

At least the game will be on a RSN and hopefully the production will be better than ESPN3.

RE: ACC Network
A few quick questions? Does the ACC get money for those games on RSN (17 FB, 43 MBB, and 36 WBB games for RSN thru 2026-27) that is not part of the ACCN TV Monies or would be an addition??

What is syndicated TV rights to ACC athletic contests through 2027? Is that Tier Three? Also does that mean Raycom sports will produce the RSN games viewed on Sinclair RSNs?
