If you guys want in, this might be a good thread to talk among yourselves and elect a GM.

I nominate Hokie Mark to be GM. In part because he knows the schools from both factions in this conference well and in part because he is active and in part because I don't think anybody will poach VT so we won't have to elect anybody again. 05-stirthepot 03-lmfao

RE: The Realignment Mock Draft
A heads up that the rules have been tweaked to look more like an expansion draft:

Quote:The Rules:
- Conferences pick in reverse order of last year's conference Sagarin ratings
- Conferences first declare 5 teams protected. Those teams are the initial 5 that the conference starts with. All non-protected teams then become "free agents."
- Conferences use the 7 rounds of the draft to accumulate 12 teams total. If for any reason a conference has less than 12 teams at the conclusion of the 7 rounds, they are granted as many immediate compensatory draft picks as is necessary to reach 12.
- Conferences can pick a "free agent" team of peer status or lower (P5 -> G5 -> FCS)
- Conferences can negotiate trades for both teams and picks or a combination of the two though I as commissioner must agree to them to make sure we have no shenanigans going on to empty out conferences

Accordingly, top priority along with selecting a GM should be selection of the five protected schools in each conference.

I think for protected teams in the conference ... it's pretty easy and obvious to select Clemson and Florida State and North Carolina. I don't think 4 and 5 are quite so clear cut. If I had to pick right now I'd probably pick Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech in that order, and I feel almost forced into that by who 1-3 were.

I had VT as my #4 as well. I genuinely don't know who is more valuable between NC State (given UNC already), Georgia Tech (given in recovery), and Miami (given small private). Who 1 through 3 were pretty much excluded the oBE teams just from geography.

Agree. Miami/GT I could be talked into flipping due to new state and Atlanta market.

Think in terms of who is most likely to be grabbed by another conference if they aren't protected. Sorry, GTS, but Miami is more desirable to outsiders, IMO.

You have the 2nd P5 pick so you can get GT immediately anyway.

The trick is figuring out how low GT will fall, then picking them just before someone else does.

RE: The Realignment Mock Draft
OK, so here are the protected teams:

Pac-12: USC, UCLA, California, Oregon, Washington ||
ACC: Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Miami ||
Big 12: Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Oklahoma State, West Virginia ||
B1G: Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin ||
SEC: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M ||

No major mistakes that I can see.

Here's the draft order (P5 only) for rounds 1 & 2:
Pac, ACC, XII, B1G, SEC, SEC, B1G, XII, ACC, Pac

It's important to get great value in the first 2 picks, IMO.

The first pick should be easy enough. These are my top teams - just take the highest one available:

ACC Big Board (unprotected teams):
1. Notre Dame
2. LSU
3. Tennessee
4. Nebraska

(Sorry, GTS, but if LSU and TN are both available, I have to take LSU)

The 2nd pick is much tougher. Here are the top Eastern-ish teams I expect to be available:

Maryland
South Carolina
Kentucky
Missouri
Northwestern
Ole Miss
Purdue
Indiana

Any recommendations on how to order those?

I'm also going to contact the other GMs about trading down for extra picks - assuming the Pac-12 takes Notre Dame.

RE: The Realignment Mock Draft
I think ND and LSU are more valuable as trade assets than kept assets because both will definitely become geographically isolated.

I wouldn't even consider Ole Miss, NW, or Purdue yet. The second pick board can be truncated after Kentucky for now.

I'd be OK with trading away ND/LSU for two earlier picks (1st/3rd) or even three picks to really beef up the middle (1st/4th/6th).

I was thinking to offer swapping 1st and 2nd round picks (to either SEC, XII or B1G) in exchange for their 3rd pick. Is that asking too much?

Oh, and I don't expect the Pac-12 will pass on ND, so I can't trade them (but if they ARE available, I smell trade with Big Ten - I'll ask for Penn State)

I think it's obvious if you're trading a 1st round pick you want that later 1st round pick at a minimum. The question becomes how much is that worth beyond the other 1st round pick. I don't imagine many willing to cough up their first two picks just to get ahead 4 spots on their first pick.

Yes, I saw that the Big Ten decided to protect Nebraska instead of Michigan State. Worse for the Big XII, better for the ACC.

I also forgot to include unprotected teams from the ACC on my big board - duh!

Not sure I would agree with putting Illinois that high though.

RE: The Realignment Mock Draft
Why should the Big 10 be allowed to swap conferences that can't choose Notre Dame for the right to choose ND?

That doesn't make any sense. They are getting two P5 picks before any power 5 conference slots come up.

Illinois has 50k students and is the only P5 public school in a large wealthy state. I guess it depends on what your goals are. They don't have football power but I bet they bring in a huge amount of tv money.
