PAC 12 in talks to sell key properties to Amazon
Quote:San Francisco(AP) An arrangement that could turn the world of college athletics on its head is bubbling to the surface.

Word leaked early Monday morning that private negotiations between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and PAC 12 Commissioner Larry Scott have been ongoing for weeks. The details of those negotiations could shatter the conventions of media partnerships with college athletic conferences.

The key piece of a potential deal is the PAC 12 Networks. The independent cable network has been struggling since its inception and has received quite a bit of popular criticism in recent months especially when Scott turned down a reported offer from ESPN that would have aided distribution. It appears Scott has had his sights set on an emerging digital marketplace, however.

Amazon has offered to buy the PAC 12 Networks outright and alter the format from linear to exclusively digital. In other words, the PAC 12 Networks would only be available through an Amazon Prime membership.

Rumors are also swirling that Amazon is preparing to jump into the market of cable replacement to supplement their streaming empire. The details are still clouded at this time, but presumably the PAC 12 Networks would form a cornerstone of the new Amazon digital cable service.

Very interesting. Sounds like Amazon wants to own both a cable company as well as the cable channels themselves. Obviously, they can't buy everyone and everything, but if they create enough content value from exclusive offerings then maybe that would increase their subs and their sub value.

Pair that with Amazon Prime and you have an interesting foray into the sports market.

Does this include T1 rights? Do Disney/FOX games get moved to Amazon?

MWC suddenly becomes a more popular property for Disney/FOX to fill late Saturday slots. Could necessitate adding NMSU/UTEP for content.

New Mexico State is not going anywhere.

NDSU would get invited 1st before New Mexico State would.

You're right. The Mountain West could really benefit from this.

Kind of risky for the PAC 12, but if it pays off then maybe they catch up to everyone else and might have enough revenue to attract some of the bigger players.

Amazon's Thursday night NFL viewership went up 48% in 2018.

In a span of 5-10 years, Notre Dame will have gone from grass to turf, no scoreboard to 55'-by-95' scoreboard, and all games televised to @Stanford/@USC being streamed on Amazon each year. Wow.

It would depend on the Bezos moon project not soaking him.

We can only hope that Bezos will relocate Larry Scott to the moon.
