That is very surprising!

And worse still, it's during a pretty terrible time. No idea how this doesn't completely destroy one semi-major team's season with how late a team will have to backfill once Michigan is done with their search.

Not completely unsurprising though...Michigan lost their top 4 players this season to the draft (Brazdiekas, Matthews, Poole, and Simpson), and the Asst. GM of the Cavs is Mike Gansey, who played under Beilein in his time at WVU. Add that to the fact that he was a finalist for the Pistons gig last summer, and it's clear that he was open to the opportunity.

Huggins to Michigan?

Yep, that kind of came out of nowhere. There losing a heck of a coach. I'm sure they're scrambling who to look at now.

It's going to be a coach like that who knows they're on borrowed time or having a down season. Maybe Shaka Smart?

Also, I wouldn't rule out Billy Donovan for this gig, especially considering how the season ended up for the Thunder, with another two teams passing them in the West (Nuggets and Blazers), and him now knowing they're effectively consigned to the 5 seed at best for the foreseeable future.

I know his son was hired recently up at Niagara. Don't think he has an asst. who would step up. Tough time to lose a coach. This will be interesting.

Safe to say if Mick didn't take the UCLA gig, he'd be a finalist for the Michigan job? And UC would be even further behind the 8ball even later in the recruiting season.

Michigan is a top tier job. Donnovan or Stephens could be real possibilities with their seasons up. Also Dane Fife.

IMO, not in a million years. I loved Huggins while he was here, but I imagine Michigan wouldn't be as tolerant of a drunkard with a sketchy past as WVU.

Can't remember who has signed extension or not this offseason, but Porter Moser? Gregg Marshall?

I do expect Donovan to be keeping on eye on this one though

I think, like UCLA, Mick would be quite a few spots down their list. But unlike UCLA, the Michigan job isn't tarnished by a history of firing coaches for not making the Final Four every year, a trainwreck of a coaching search, very high taxes, and a floundering conference. IMO, Michigan will be able to get pretty much whoever they want and won't have to resort to the second or third page of their long list of candidates.

Michigan is a bid time job. I wouldn't imagine they'd go after someone who looks to be on this ice at their current job (Huggins, Smart etc...).

Donovan is a possibility. I also wouldn't be too surprised to see them try to poach a coach who has already changed jobs once this year. Could Nate Oats for example be pulled away from Alabama to come coach at Michigan? Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

… or the NCAA's about to come down on them.

It's not like Michigan hasn't gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar before with an "aw shucks" nice old guy coach.

Wonder if Dan Gilbert is a UM or MSU guy. He can't be real popular up there right now. LOL

I wonder if UCLA'S coach Cronin will try to leave UCLA and claim Michigan was always his dream job. haha

I'll be curious to see if they attempt to talk to Nate Oats or not. He would have been a good fit for that job.

While that would be funny, I think Michigan will be pursuing the type of candidate that turned UCLA down long before they offered Mick a job.

That would be interesting, because Pettway might be back in play for us.

Hey, I just had a thought...

Since their coach left, the bulk of Michigan's team will be looking to transfer. Maybe we can get come of their guys.
