UAB Athletic Communications Named Recipient of FWAA Super 11 Award
https://uabsports.com/news/2019/5/9/foot...award.aspx

"UAB Athletic Communications was named a recipient of the 2018 Super 11 Award, which the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) gives out annually to the best performing sports information departments in the Football Bowl Subdivision."

Is this a joke?

I'm going with it's a joke.

We complain regularly here about getting little local media attention. That's their job. And if the local media doesn't cooperate, then they should be flooding social media with their own stories and reports. But how many times did we not know basic info about our teams because there were no releases from the SID office?

Like many other things UAB has a better reputation nationally that we do within our own state, hence the award. But locally, I think the athletic communications office is failing miserably.

I have been a vocal critic of them but in their defense they are under staffed and have no money to do anything. The AD not allowing any additional funds and being called by the BOT this is one area you feel it.

Ted and his staff do a tremendous job. I've seen first-hand how hard he works to get national and local coverage. It's not Ted's fault that al.com covers the beat so poorly. He gives them chances to cover the beat properly. The job they do on social media is top notch, even though they are certainly understaffed and probably underfunded. Are there areas they can be better? Of course there is, just like with everyone else. But I'm not sure I understand the criticism.
Just my opinion.

I see plenty of UAB social media stories by Steve Irvine.

Ever since the B'ham NEWS released its editorial staff and sold off its local printing plant, it has become an "absentee news source" with its HQ in Louisville,KY (at least that is where one sends subscription checks). AL.com may have a few local writers, but it is not a local paper / news source.
