Southern CA was the best place in the world to live... 40 years ago. 30 years ago it was good. 20 years ago it was ok. Now it's halfway to Mexico as far as quality of life.

They still have wealthy institutions from being the best economy in the world from 1930-1999. But at this point they're a mere 40 years behind Cleveland in their decline.

Wow. Really wanted to lay a good ole blanket statement on California. Glad you found an opening.

Uh... I lived in the LA Basin 1989-2015. Captain Bearcat is spot on with his assessment. Would you care to point out exactly where he is in error?????

I was a Long Beach Cop (which is in the south bay of Los Angeles County) and lived in Orange County. My wife is an OC native... Make no mistake, you can get rich in California if you work your butt off. I fled SoCal with a $100k public employee pension (90% of my base pay) and traded a SoCal 4 plex that I bought in 1999 straight across (tax deferred) for a 40 unit in Cincinnati. And I sold my 5013 sq ft custom home in SoCal and replaced it with an old house in Amberley Village. And I also sold two small SoCal SFR's rentals before splitting...

But unless you have ever lived that traffic life, LA court at 8:30 am commuting from Orange County and then back home to Orange County and then back up to Long Beach for a 3:00 pm-01:00 am shift, and paid 9.3% state tax on every W2 dollar earned over $36k, you really do speak in ignorance. Sorry for the bluntness.

My house was over a $1m as was every single one of the houses on my street. Yet, my kid, attending public schools, had a temporary construction trailer in both 5th and 6th grade. Why?? Overcrowding. Why??? illegal immigration. My kid is now a Soph at Walnut Hills. We moved here for 7th grade year. No complaints so far.

I shake my head when I read the pro-california comments put forth by these smug Cincinnatians. Unbelievable...
DL

It's all subjective.

Bottom line - the expense of the city is directly correlated to supply & demand. Market forces contradict your assessment. It's expensive for some of the same reasons you don't like it. The market says that it's a place that's highly in demand. The city, and the state as a whole. Both of which continue to grow.

People are there in great numbers due to opportunities, which in turn drives cost of living expenses. It's the 2nd largest city in America, and one of the largest in the entire world. What exactly would one expect from such a large (and growing city) with inferior infrastructure?

I've lived in Tokyo, Manila, Melbourne, and Sao Paulo (22M) and this is just par for the course stuff for an insanely large metro. It's not for everyone, but they're all large for good reasons.

As a real estate investor I get what you're saying, but ultimately it comes down to one's tastes and preferences. There's nothing in the market that indicates that LA is on a downward trajectory.

Btw, imma Walnut Hills grad, and we had temporary construction trailers there for just about every year i was a student. jus sayin'...

mc

LOL.

Whatever. Southern California was my home for thirty years. I was also there 1982-1985 when I was assigned to a counter terrorism hostage rescue team for the 1984 Olympics (US Army Military Police) We primarily did dignitary protection. I practically "lived" in downtown LA at Parker Center, the LAPD HQ. I loved LA. Literally. I had employment offers from both the LAPD and the LASO.

Instead, I returned home to Cincinnati and attended UC from 1985-1989, and then went right back out there. I went to Long Beach PD for a variety of reasons, but primarily because I had many offers and LB seemed like the best of all worlds. And the Los Angeles City Pension system terrified me.

I cannot speak of tokyo, manila, ,melbourne or San Paulo. But I know Los Angeles inside and out. It is a mess. both figuratively and literally. Even the concrete is rotting in los angeles.

We visit at least twice a year. My wife's family is in Orange County and All of my friends are in Los Angeles County/Orange County. I dated the gal who is now the chief of police in santa monica. I have literally a dozen friends who are chiefs of police all over the southland.

Your assessment of the desirability/livability of los angeles and the surrounding area is a gross oversimplification of the totality of the SoCal lifestyle.

There were "no indicators" that "problems in the market" existed in 2006 and 2007.

And you were in temporary trailers at Walnut Hills because of new construction. There is no new school construction occurring in southern california that I am aware of. My kid was in temp trailers because of overcrowding and because of the incredibly high cost of permitting/building in southern california.

How high? I paid $54k in permit fees in 2008 to have the privilege of building a single family home in southern california. I can probably scan and post the docs if you are interested. I am pretty sure that we saved everything to disc when we built that house.... 03-lmfao

DL

p.s. I'm kinda rich. maybe not Doss rich, but kinda rich.

Not sure what any of your resume has to do with any of this, but...cheers.

It's fine to say you and your friends agree that it's becoming some :::insert opinion::: however, it's a subjective opinion of one vs the objectivity of observing how masses of people are voting with their feet. It's still a place people wanna be, so no it's not trending downward. And for the OP....it's def not on a Cleveland trek.

People keep moving there. It continues to grow. This in spite of all the things you're referring to. These things aren't mutually exclusive. The concrete can be rotting there, but the city still attracts more ppl annually than most.

The growth rate, the sheer number of people who have moved there, and increasing economic growth says that it's still a highly desirable city. Its GDP is nearly a trillion - 882M - and it's growing, nearly 2x that of the next 2 closest metros.

Sure, your money goes further elsewhere, but duh...of course that's the case when moving from a high cost area to a cheaper one.

No. That's not what was happening at Walnut when i was there. I'm c/o 94 and there wasn't construction happening at that time.

Great article. Thanks for the post.

I wonder if Bohn read it? A much better way to search for a coach instead of a short conversation in the hallway with Savino, and a Sunday phone call with Brannen. And we wonder why we struggle to take the next step in the NCAA tournament, bowl game invites, and conference affiliations.

Yea man. Bohn's coaching hires have been a disaster. Fickell, goggins, Clark- heard. Might as well fold the athletic department.

no ****

It was Bohn’s fault that UC blew a 22 point lead vs Nevada or a 15 point lead vs Iowa

This is laughable. No one counts city limit populations, silly rabbit. Do you really think LA proper has 13M?!? No, the city has 4M and the REGION has 13M. It's metropolitan regions. And as the article's very title states - the region continues to grow. My point stands. https://d.pr/i/PRPrpn

https://www.ocregister.com/2018/09/08/a-...alifornia/

You link to an op-ed?!? https://d.pr/i/ckW93a

https://fee.org/articles/can-california-...ss-exodus/

Conjecture https://d.pr/i/I8F6Gg "Can...?" That's asking if, not saying anything about an actually decline in absolute growth.

https://www.investors.com/politics/edito...alifornia/

Oh...more op-ed links, aye? https://d.pr/i/ax4dHs I get the rhetoric, higher taxes blah blah blah...whatever with that, different conversation.

Objective quantitative facts > opinions. Men lie, women lie, numbers don't.

https://www.sacbee.com/news/databases/ar...79753.html

Did you even bother to read your own link?!? https://d.pr/i/neSJdy

"Despite the loss of residents to other states, California continued to grow during the last decade because of natural increase - more births than deaths - and foreign migration."

https://www.forbes.com/sites/robertwood/...3df0d86f67

Your point here? How does this invalidate the point that the region continues to grow in both population and economic might?!? Ok, some millionaires leave. And...?

Just went to LA for the first time a few months ago and was very underwhelmed. It's built up to be this special place and some areas were nice, but didn't do much for me. Now going a few hours up the coast to Santa Barbara, that's a place I could live.

Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz are all fantastic. LA overwhelms me, but it's fun if you know where to go - so much great ethnic food. San Francisco is/ was my kind of town - it's compact, and has a ton to do. Unfortunately, it's become overrun with tech bros the last decade......

I've been to LA several times and San Diego once. LA is a complete dump. I've always thought so. I liked San Diego but as others have said you'll struggle to have a good quality of life out there unless you are extremely wealthy.

They seem to be everywhere now in big cities. I work in Oakley and you can't go anywhere in this area without seeing them on every street corner begging, or hitting up / harassing you in commercial parking lots as soon as you get out of your car or come out of a restaurant or store. It's become a joke.

Don't expect people to have an open mind about places and people (they view) different from them.

By far my biggest gripe with LA. It's so far spread out that you can be there and never get to see people you know are there cuz it's such a pain to migrate around.

As a person who hates to drive there's not a ton i like about LA. It kinda sucks to be a city that spread out and have such a crappy transportation infrastructure.

It's not for me....but damn, that weather ain't bad.

Alternatively, SF is far too tech bro'd out....and I work in tech. It's a whole other type of tech bro-ness.

If i had to choose a major city in the US to be in it'd be, NYC. I hate the cold, so I've settled in in ATL.
