Southern CA was the best place in the world to live... 40 years ago. 30 years ago it was good. 20 years ago it was ok. Now it's halfway to Mexico as far as quality of life.
They still have wealthy institutions from being the best economy in the world from 1930-1999. But at this point they're a mere 40 years behind Cleveland in their decline.
Wow. Really wanted to lay a good ole blanket statement on California. Glad you found an opening.
Uh... I lived in the LA Basin 1989-2015. Captain Bearcat is spot on with his assessment. Would you care to point out exactly where he is in error?????
I was a Long Beach Cop (which is in the south bay of Los Angeles County) and lived in Orange County. My wife is an OC native... Make no mistake, you can get rich in California if you work your butt off. I fled SoCal with a $100k public employee pension (90% of my base pay) and traded a SoCal 4 plex that I bought in 1999 straight across (tax deferred) for a 40 unit in Cincinnati. And I sold my 5013 sq ft custom home in SoCal and replaced it with an old house in Amberley Village. And I also sold two small SoCal SFR's rentals before splitting...
But unless you have ever lived that traffic life, LA court at 8:30 am commuting from Orange County and then back home to Orange County and then back up to Long Beach for a 3:00 pm-01:00 am shift, and paid 9.3% state tax on every W2 dollar earned over $36k, you really do speak in ignorance. Sorry for the bluntness.
My house was over a $1m as was every single one of the houses on my street. Yet, my kid, attending public schools, had a temporary construction trailer in both 5th and 6th grade. Why?? Overcrowding. Why??? illegal immigration. My kid is now a Soph at Walnut Hills. We moved here for 7th grade year. No complaints so far.
I shake my head when I read the pro-california comments put forth by these smug Cincinnatians. Unbelievable...

It's all subjective.
Bottom line - the expense of the city is directly correlated to supply & demand. Market forces contradict your assessment. It's expensive for some of the same reasons you don't like it. The market says that it's a place that's highly in demand. The city, and the state as a whole. Both of which continue to grow.
People are there in great numbers due to opportunities, which in turn drives cost of living expenses. It's the 2nd largest city in America, and one of the largest in the entire world. What exactly would one expect from such a large (and growing city) with inferior infrastructure?
I've lived in Tokyo, Manila, Melbourne, and Sao Paulo (22M) and this is just par for the course stuff for an insanely large metro. It's not for everyone, but they're all large for good reasons.
As a real estate investor I get what you're saying, but ultimately it comes down to one's tastes and preferences. There's nothing in the market that indicates that LA is on a downward trajectory.
Btw, imma Walnut Hills grad, and we had temporary construction trailers there for just about every year i was a student. jus sayin'...

LOL.
Whatever. Southern California was my home for thirty years. I was also there 1982-1985 when I was assigned to a counter terrorism hostage rescue team for the 1984 Olympics (US Army Military Police) We primarily did dignitary protection. I practically "lived" in downtown LA at Parker Center, the LAPD HQ. I loved LA. Literally. I had employment offers from both the LAPD and the LASO.
Instead, I returned home to Cincinnati and attended UC from 1985-1989, and then went right back out there. I went to Long Beach PD for a variety of reasons, but primarily because I had many offers and LB seemed like the best of all worlds. And the Los Angeles City Pension system terrified me.
I cannot speak of tokyo, manila, ,melbourne or San Paulo. But I know Los Angeles inside and out. It is a mess. both figuratively and literally. Even the concrete is rotting in los angeles.
We visit at least twice a year. My wife's family is in Orange County and All of my friends are in Los Angeles County/Orange County. I dated the gal who is now the chief of police in santa monica. I have literally a dozen friends who are chiefs of police all over the southland.
Your assessment of the desirability/livability of los angeles and the surrounding area is a gross oversimplification of the totality of the SoCal lifestyle.
There were "no indicators" that "problems in the market" existed in 2006 and 2007.
And you were in temporary trailers at Walnut Hills because of new construction. There is no new school construction occurring in southern california that I am aware of. My kid was in temp trailers because of overcrowding and because of the incredibly high cost of permitting/building in southern california.
How high? I paid $54k in permit fees in 2008 to have the privilege of building a single family home in southern california. I can probably scan and post the docs if you are interested. I am pretty sure that we saved everything to disc when we built that house....
