Juwuan Johnson cost himself some money by transferring. Would have been a draft pick had he stayed a Huskie. Now he has a tryout opportunity. I remember his motive for leaving was exposure to be a top draft pick. Some of these guys are delusional and need to hang tight. It’s football. Injuries happen. There's no proof of this...Sutton Smith had two of the most insane years you could have as a defender at NIU and was taken in the 6th round...thinking Juwuan is at least that just by staying at NIU? come on...
You can question his decision, that's fine, but it wasn't delusional, TCU gave him an opportunity.
As for the transfer portal, I'm all for giving players more say and flexibility, even if it ends up hurting programs like NIU. If we can't pay them, at least let them choose where they want to be.
But they do choose where they want to be when signing that scholarship.

Yep, and they deserve to continue to be able to choose, especially considering all of the coaches, faculty, other students, and really any other situation in this country allows you to not be locked in for 4-5 years. :)

The players should have some choice. But not free will to change whenever they feel. As it is, they can change whenever they wish now, it just comes with a penalty and restrictions. But I'd like to see things changed where kids could leave if the coach who recruited them leaves. Also, the school should not be able to veto any of his choices.
Johnson wasn't getting drafted. Too small. Sutton's size dropped him from the 3rd to the 6th. Johnson's size dropped him from the 6th to UDFA. It will be the same for AJD. Too short. He had JJ numbers or better last year and can duplicate that this year. We will see what happens to him.

+1 Juwuan was grading as top 5 outside linebacker than he got too big for NIU

Juwaun Johnson had a better chance of getting drafted had he stayed at NIU. With how dominant our defense was he would continue to create turnovers in back to back years. He didn’t even play half the season at TCU. There’s something to be said about a guy that doesn’t crack the starting line up on his own team.

This was my last post about Sutton's draft:
Max - round 3, pick 75 to Green Bay
Sutton - round 6, pick 212 to S.F.
I posted reasons as to why he MAY not get drafted.

Going to TCU certainly hurt his chances of getting drafted. I'm just saying I don't think he gets drafted even if he stayed. His number were no better than Bobby Jones or AJD. His only advantage would have been doing it for 2 years. But he's 6'0, 218 lbs. Smith will be playing LB at 6' 3/8" 233 and he is said to be too small. I think Johnson goes UDFA even had he stayed. It will be interesting to what happens to AJD. He has the exact opportunity that Johnson gave away.

RE: Fotis Kokosioulis the latest to transfer
No doubt Juwaun would have been drafted if he stayed at NIU and duplicated his numbers from his junior year. The kid was a stud. The NFL would have seen him as a difference maker and playmaker at LB. They may have even valued him more than Sutton. I was surprised Sutton wasn't taken in the fourth round. I certainly thought the NFL would have valued his production the last two years. I guess the fact he would be playing LB was uncertainty enough for them to not draft him earlier...

I don't think there's any way to know this is true. Anthony Johnson at Buffalo posted monster numbers and didn't get drafted.
Sutton got drafted because his number were so ridiculously off the charts good they couldn't be ignored. JJ was a really good player here, but he wasn't in the same stratosphere as Sutton in terms of production. Nobody was.

RE: Fotis Kokosioulis the latest to transfer
I think anyone criticizing JJ for transferring are being a bit ridiculous and thinking only with Huskie bias.
He legitimately checks all the boxes of having good reason to transfer.
-Degree in Hand
-New College closer to home (at least where he went to HS)
-Very good player looking to prove himself at P5
-Coordinator left NIU
He actually ended up having a nice year at TCU he just got off to a slow start adjusting obviously the talent level is better offensively in the Big 12, look at OU. TCU also plays a defense that’s different. He’s a true OLB/Rover type player. He was playing more of an ILB they way they align.
As far as draft goes, he’s a bit undersized. His strengths playing to the roving OLB because he’s smaller but very quick and played safety in high school. Hope he does well at the next level. Wish he would have stayed but I think people here are a tad over judging with personal NIU feelings.

Interested to see what happens here. Old coaches were really high on the kid that is why they used him as true freshman and he was #2 behind DJ. New coaches were not high on him at all and pretty much showed him the door. Huge contrast of opinion by the two staffs. Time will tell who was right.

He's going to Fordham and Rowell to Maine. It seems odd to me that Chicago guys both went East. It's like someone on staff may have Eastern contacts
