Of course 2019 is the one year in the 8-game series we don't play UTSA.

Need to elevate our program so we dominate the rest of this series while they're struggling. They've already won the first 2 games in it.

Look back: Wilson, who was considered an elite recruiter during stops as an assistant at Ole Miss, Tennessee and LSU, exceeded expectations by winning six games apiece during his first two seasons at Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners lost a lot of experienced players and were projected to take a step back during the 2018 season, but they plummeted. The team ranked No. 129 out of 129 NCAA-recognized FBS teams last season in total offense (247.1 yards per game) and No. 128 in scoring offense (14.2 points per game). With the offense stalling, the inexperienced defense was under more pressure it could not handle. The team went from No. 5 nationally in total defense during the 2017 season (287.8 yards allowed per game) to No. 96 (435.5 yards allowed per game).

Strengths: It seems likely the UTSA defense will be the first to recover. Defensive linemen Baylen Baker and Lorenzo Dantzler should provide leadership up front while Carl Austin III and Cassius Grady will anchor the secondary.

The Roadrunners have long had a strong special-teams unit. Kicker Jared Sackett should continue to be an asset while return specialist Matt Guidry also is back to help bolster the UTSA lineup.

The offense needs a ton of work, but quarterback Frank Harris shined during the Roadrunners’ spring game and could be key to revitalizing the attack after recovering from back-to-back ACL injuries. While Harris was impressive, UTSA’s starting race isn’t officially settled, and he faces competition from 2018 starter Cordale Grundy, Lowell Narcisse and Jordan Weeks.

Weaknesses: Jeff Kastl takes over as UTSA’s new offensive coordinator, the third in as many seasons under Wilson. Kastl needs to coax improvement out of every position group. The offensive line will be key, with the competition for starting expected to continue through preseason camp. If UTSA can’t get more push up front this season, the offense won’t have a chance to rebound and the defense will face more stress.

Outlook: San Antonio has embraced the Roadrunners since the program was first launched in 2011 under the direction of Larry Coker. There are plenty of talented recruits in the region and there is a sense UTSA can consistently be competitive in Conference USA. The question concerns whether Wilson can get the offense, which has been tepid throughout his tenure, to move the ball.

Depends on how much ODUs win over Va Tech counts for and how much of the benefit of the doubt WKU gets ( we got none for Tyson Summers. Fools.)

2018 record: 2-10, 1-7 in Sun Belt; fifth in East Division

Look back: Former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier hoped Shawn Elliott would replace him when he retired. The Gamecocks ultimately chose Will Muschamp and Elliott landed at Georgia State, where he overachieved by posting a 7-5 record and leading his team to a Cure Bowl win in 2017. A bit of regression was expected in Year 2 following some player departures, but the Panthers surprised again by taking a bigger step back than expected.

The team ranked No. 121 out of 129 NCAA-recognized FBS teams in scoring defense (37.4 points allowed per game) and No. 103 in scoring offense (23.9 points per game) last season.

Injuries didn't help, forcing Georgia State to rely on a lot of freshmen and sophomores. The team closed 2018 with a seven game losing streak.

Strengths: Georgia State quarterback Dan Ellington returns to lead the Panthers’ offense. He will get help from veteran offensive linemen Hunter Atkinson and Shamarious Gilmore.

During his first season at Georgia State, Ellington led the Panthers in passing (2,119 yards) and rushing (625 yards) while accounting for 17 touchdowns (12 passing, 5 rushing). Running back Tra Barnett and receiver Cornelius McCoy are among Ellington’s top options. The offense features some talented underclassmen who could make strides during the offseason.

Defensive end Terry Thomas, an all-Sun Belt selection, and senior linebacker Ed Curney, who led the team with 81 tackles, return for Georgia State. While the defense struggled last season, the unit forced turnovers and won the Panthers’ spring game, an encouraging sign of progress.

First-team all-Sun Belt punter Brandon Wright can help bail the Panthers out of trouble if the offense stalls next season.

Weaknesses: Georgia State lost the most talented all-around athlete from last season’s team in receiver Penny Hart, a three-time all-Sun Belt selection for the Panthers as well as a Freshman All-American and the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2015. He finished his career as the fourth-leading receiver in Sun Belt Conference history with 2,950 receiving yards. He also had 202 receptions, which ranked seventh in Sun Belt history.

The Panthers are adapting to working with six new assistant coaches who got their first chance to mentor players on the field during spring football. The group includes offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brad Glenn, offensive line coach Thomas Austin, running backs coach Jimmy Smith, defensive line coach Brad Lawing, cornerbacks coach Aairon Savage and inside linebackers/special-teams coach Shiel Wood. It could take some time for players to adapt to their new coaches.

Last season, the defense struggled while relying on a lot of inexperienced players. The team got no push up front, ranking No. 128 nationally in pass-efficiency defense and No. 123 in rushing defense. Players at every level of the defense have hard-earned experience, but there is no guarantee that will translate to improved performance.

Outlook: Elliott was upbeat after the spring game, but it will take a lot more work to get the team back on track and competing for a bowl bid.

“It’s been a really good spring. We’ve got a great group of guys. We really have a good feeling about our players and our staff, so we are headed in the right direction,” Elliott said in an interview with GeorgiaStateSports.com. “Now the real works starts.”

Coach: Jamey Chadwell (3-9, entering first full season; 63-44 overall)

2018 record: 2-6, 5-7 in Sun Belt; fourth in East Division

Look back: Moglia had one of the most unique stories in college football, leaving coaching to become a high level pharmaceutical executive. His passion for football never left. After a brief stint as an unpaid Nebraska football staff member and a United Football League coach, he answered the call to help Coastal Carolina launch a football program. Moglia’s administrative experience and elite motivational speaking skills along with a keen understanding of what it means to no longer have football in your life seemed to be a perfect mix for the Chanticleers. The team went 41-13 at the Football Championship Subdivision before moving up to the FBS level in 2016 and promptly going 10-2. Moglia was forced to take a medical leave of absence in 2017, asking offensive coordinator Jamey Chadwell to lead the team in his absence. The Chanticleers struggled before Moglia returned for the 2018 season. They posted a 5-7 record and Moglia announced at the end of the season, he was resigning and handing the program over to Chadwell.

The move didn’t sit well with some players, who chose to leave after losing their inspirational leader.

Strengths: Dynamic sophomore quarterbacks Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter are battling for the starting job. Both signal-callers have shown signs they can make big plays and added a jolt of energy to spring practice. They’ll pair with talented tailback CJ Marable and a young but talented receiver unit.

Coastal Carolina should get a solid push up front. Last season, it was one of 11 teams in the country to start no seniors on the offensive line.

Defensive end Tarron Jackson and linebacker Silas Kelly earned all-Sun Belt honors last season and will help anchor the defense.

Weaknesses:

The Chanticleers lost some key leaders who either graduated or opted to transfer. One of the bigger departures was defensive end Jeffrey Gunter. Coastal Carolina also has some issues in the secondary after losing five regular contributors. While some solid pieces remain, the team’s depth will be tested.

Outlook: Coastal Carolina is starting over. The program had a lot of momentum under Moglia and has lost a bit of mojo, but an exciting offense could help this team carve out a new identity. The whiplash changes that hindered the Chanticleers the past two seasons should largely be settled, but the roster lacks depth and is vulnerable if any injury issues pop up.

It’s time to see if Coastal Carolina can match the magic Moglia delivered in their first season moving up to FBS or if it will be a much slower climb to the top of the Sun Belt for a young program trying to make its mark.
