2019-20 Basketball Season
What the hooey!?! How can our conference get better with all these defections. First the Lipscomb coach, then Cooper (Lipscomb) and JD Notae (Jacksonville). It could be a rough season for a number of teams next season. Unfortunate.

RE: 2019-20 Basketball Season
How is the conference recruiting situation? Are good transfers coming into the conference? Hopefully the ASUN is improving talent wise.

I'm still a little confused about Belmont being much of a better job than Lipscomb. The only argument I can see is that he was a Belmont grad. But in my eyes, unless Belmont just pays a lot more money, it's almost the exact same job.

Anyway, my prediction for the future of the ASun is Liberty, FGCU, UNF, Lipscomb and UNA (after the transition) will be the perineal top 5, with the occasional NJIT or KSU making runs for top spots. Jacksonville and Stetson can be strong at times, but until they either do some major upgrades or build new facilities, I dont see coaches staying long or great recruiting going on. Lipscomb has proven you can win there, so I dont see a major downswing with them.

BTW, JU has finished in the top half of the ASC twice in the last 5 yrs including 3rd in 2018. Other than Lipscomb (Nashville) they are in the only big metro market in the ASC. They will be fine.

I'm not saying they wont br fine, I am saying they could and should do a lot better. I noticed an article from a couple of years ago that JU had plans on building a new arena, but that's as far as it went. Is that still in the plans?

I'm just saying I would like to see JU and Stetson do as much as they possibly could in facilities, and that would help in recruiting, and I dont mean to single those two programs out, especially when UNA has a long way to go, but we are already upgrading and have plans on more.

Like it or not, since Liberty has joined, everyone in the conference will have to up their game when it comes to facilities or it will be Liverty and everyone else.

And a serious question, that honestly should go in another thread.

Does Jacksonville have future plans on scholarship football? Or do they plan on staying in the PFL?

1) A basketball only practice facility is in the planning stages. I have heard that it will be $8+ml project

2) I do not think JU will go scholarship football.

As I stated, how long is Liberty going to stay in the ASUN? From the beginning I felt that this conference would be temporary since it allows us to have a foundation with Olympic sports (since LU had an issue in the Big South). I don’t think everyone shoul worry so much about LU’s facility compared to every other school. Not sure LU will be around the ASUN in the next 5-10 years; this is not stating that the ASUN is not appreciated at all either.

Where would Liberty go? A G5 FBS conference will either not invite LU or not interest LU. The A-10 is full, the Big East would not invite Liberty, and Liberty doesn't really fit within the footprint of any other conference that would be a step up. The CAA has denied LU for years; the SoCon isn't really a step up. LU isn't getting a P5 invite.

Depends on how much the administration likes being Indy ih football. If they would rather stay indy, there is no real reason to move from the ASun unless Liberty just dint want to associate with the institutions in the conference.

We may not know yet but we’ve seen the “impossible” a couple years ago by going fbs. People may have decline is but as it’s tough to receive tv deals, many will regret not taking the deal in the long run. In these outcomes money talk and some see the bigger picture than others. I honestly don’t mind that LU is not with the CAA, C-USA or the Sun Belt. Those schools barely make anything back financially and would probably have to drop sports teams as the price of college is getting higher and higher. It may look like there’s no possibility, just like going FBS, but the time will come when the opportunity will come. Academia and athletics go hand in hand, especially with money. Look how we benefited from online courses while others mocked us. Look how colleges are using that platform more and more these days. Same will come with our own production of LFSN plus folks in the athletic department who has very good connection. Good things are coming; ASUN is just temporary.

There is no doubt if a better conference came calling we would go (just like every other team in the conference). I don’t see anyone wanting us any time soon so I think we are here for awhile.

It was a no-brainer that Casey Alexander would go to Belmont. It's his home.

"After starring at Brentwood Academy, Alexander played at Belmont from 1992-95 before joining Byrd's staff as an assistant. He remained at Belmont for 16 years before landing his first head coaching job at Stetson in 2011."

Agreed. No offense, but Liberty is tainted goods in the eyes of many folks, which I'm sure you're all aware of regarding the hires, leadership, etc.

Liberty accepts invitation to the Bahamas Showcase, 22-24 Nov. Our first opponent will be Morgan St. followed by either Rice or Milwaukee. Other teams in the tourny are UMKC, George Washington, Evansville, and ECU.
