UT Chancellor Search Finalists
I do have to say I am a little worried that if he does leave, a new president that is selected maybe a little less athletic friendly. I would say there may be some folks on the academic side that are upset that so much money has been put into sports. I could be wrong, just a gut feeling.

He has done more than just improve athletics. He will be missed for sure.

Losing him will be worse than losing any coach.

I would bet there's about a 100% chance he gets the job. He's an alum and we all know he's the real deal. Wasn't he the runner up last time?

It will be a home run hire for UT. I am just hoping we can replace him with someone that acknowledges sports and academics are both important to a university. I am scared we will get some out of touch replacement.

Let's just hope those type of people don't get a say in things.

It will be a difficult hire. Not many folks in education at that level want to relocate to a glowing red state. Legislatures can be difficult for higher ed administrators in the best circumstances.

Board of Trustees would make the next hire? Higher education real leadership seems in short supply nowadays. Could be a difficult task of hiring the right person given all the political correctness going around, plus other political factors.

Looking at the bios — Noland is head and shoulders above the rest.

Yes, the BOT will make the next hire (if necessary). The state will require them to engage the services of an approved search firm and the search committee will include more than just trustees.

I am unsure why you would think that it has anything to do with political correctness, it is just reality.

You are correct in that higher ed leaders are in short supply and fewer and fewer choose to fight daily battles in a climate of anti-intellectualism. It isn't just higher ed leaders, doctorally prepared faculty in some areas are as scarce as hens teeth and just as higher ed leaders can, scarce faculty can pick and choose among multiple job offers.

Like you, I have a concern that if this is the best 4 candidates for UTK, what will the candidates for ETSU look like?

04-cheers

Political correctness certainly drives many, too many, decisions made at the higher education level. Merit sometimes comes in a distant third. Let’s hope our hire, if necessary, is based on MERIT alone. Anti-intellectualism? Seems this war has been carried on of late by self proclaimed intellectuals on too many college campuses.

Noland knows the Tennessee higher education system and the state's political landscape, has moved ETSU forward athletically and academically, and is a UT grad (an important factor for many on Rocky Top). He's no doubt the favorite.

With more time and resources, I think Noland could take ETSU to another level. The opportunity to leave a deep and lasting legacy at ETSU could convince Noland to stay. Unfortunately, I don't see significant additional resources coming unless some major benefactors make historic gifts to the institution. I'm not sure the kind of money that would be needed for an institutional transformation is even possible from our existing donor base.

I completely agree. There is lots of wealth in this area, but it is non resident wealth (look to The Farm, The Virginian, etc.).

BucDoctor is hitting this nail so very squarely on the head.

The anti-intellectualism, anti-science ice age that has befallen our society is working very, very grave harm on the future of this country.

I hope he decides to stay with us. As has been stated he has been the best President we have had and in some ways, is just getting started. I think it is a unique fit here for him and for the Unversity. There is so much left to be done here and I hope he is here to accomplish our goals. Down there money is oozing and they already have most everything money can buy and Dr. Noland has shown previously that pay is not the motivation factor with him. Hopefully our President stays with us!

It is not a question now of if he wants to go there, he has already decided he does, the question now is if they want him.
