At that point, before he became emotionally involved with the Blazer program, he might have cut and run. By Dec 2, he was hooked on Blazer football and the rest is history.

Wins at Bartow over Memphis, Louisville, and Cincinnati.

Probably the game (can't cite exact year right now) when the Squeaky led Blazers defeated Memphis at Bartow. It would be a long losing streak to the Tigers after that.

I also remember Torry Ward ripping down rebounds and securing the ball to defeat Louisville at Bartow.

These were both electric moments.

The return of Brooks from the ER and taking the field wearing a jersey his mother gave up in a game we won from ESU will always be a favorite of mine. That and the game where Hackney ran over TCU.

If UAB can keep this FB staff together for a while, the best favorites are yet to be played.

RE: If you could go back...
The football game I most wished I were there for is also the worst travel decision for me and was in 2000. I worked every other weekend at the time and was trying to decide between going to the Kansas game or the LSU game. I was off the weekend of the LSU game, but switched with someone and went to the Kansas game instead because I figured we had a better shot to win that one and it had also been announced that the Kansas game would count as a CUSA game for us that season.

I have three very clear memories from that game:

We had a long (like 60 yard) fumble return for a touchdown that put us up early.

Our offense struggled to move the ball and the defense wore down late, giving up a long TD play and then what turned out to be the game winning FG in the 4th quarter.

We got the ball back down 3 with like 4 minutes to go, we went 3 and out and punted (the ole Watson Brown "I'd rather guarantee a close loss than go for the win but risk losing by more" Special) and never saw the ball again. That was a loooong drive back to Birmingham.

As I recall, you were not alone in that choice. Before the season UAB was told to choose which OOC game to count as a proxy conference game. UAB chose the Kansas game for the same reason you stated. Defeating LSU in what became their Homecoming game was not expected. After losing to Auburn and a week later to UAB, Coach Saban put in a new QB and did not lose another conference game that season.

I think of that one too. It’s definitely on the list.

The Brooks thing is definitely something that couldnt happen today. The dude got carted off the field strapped to a crash board with a cervical collar around his neck, loaded into the ambulance and taken to the hospital. If a coach tried to put a player back in today there would be a national outcry. Wasnt that ECU win our first win against a nationally ranked opponent? Another fond memory from that game was our QB (Thomas Cox I think) getting a personal foul for one arm body slamming the DB that dared intercept his pass.

Before this past season the TCU game was in my opinion the best showcase of UAB football we have had. It was a friday night game and the only other sporting event on TV that night was a world series game that got rained out. Every TV in every sports bar in America was tuned into that game and we had a huge crowd and dropped 35 points on a Garry Patterson coached TCU in the first half.

That was Cox's first start at QB.

ECU was a ranked team, but it may have been one of the weaker rankings at the time like the ESPN ranking. There wasn't much fanfare when we beat them.

The Southern Miss game however was a definite victory over a top 25 team.

I think we had a couple more games against Kansas. We got waxed something like 72-0 and then we lost an overtime game to them at home I believe. Then again, my mind may be playing tricks on me.

I think ECU was #17 after defeating the Miami Hurricanes the week before

Tennessee. Maybe this time around one of those field goals would’ve been made.

Middle Tennessee football championship was pretty damn awesome tho.
