I hope this is a good hire. It is a bit concerning his administrative experience is from a non-football league.

With him coming from the A-10 though, maybe it's good for the basketball side. I'm sure the Sun Belt office wouldn't have hired him if he wasn't going to help continue the upward trajectory of football.
Let's just be very thankful we didn't get Judy MacLeod.

I agree. The one big issue on the table for the next commish is bowl tie-ins. There's no reason for us to not have bowl tie-in equal with the MAC and CUSA because those are no longer steps up.
Basketball is what it is and there's no magic wand to make us a multi-bid league or make the tournament where it's not a money loser.
Underwhelming hire.

What's so bad about her? Not that I'd choose her, but it's not her fault CUSA decided to go after marketz.

Just look at the job she did with their TV deal. Or the layout of their basketball tournament inside a football facility.

RE: SBC Hires Keith Gill as Commissioner
I posted this elsewhere, but here’s my initial impression, for what it’s worth:
As far as his qualifications to succeed as a football administrator, I think it’s a wait-and-see hire. I don’t think his recent lack of big-time football administration experience necessarily means he won’t move SBC football forward. Yes, he came from spending two years at a non-football conference in the A-10 and has been AD at FCS Richmond (good football school for its level) and no-football American University. His A-10 bio also states that he has “senior administrative” experience at both Oklahoma and Vandy, which both play big-time football, and he has had two stints with the NCAA office. He also played college football in the Belt footprint, at Duke, in the early 90s. What all that means, I don’t know, but he has at least some experience with major college football and its administration. And from what I’m gathering, he was the basketball guy with the A-10. I like basketball, so I think that can only be a good thing for the conference on that front.
I think he has a lot of potential. Not necessarily a slam dunk or a hire to be overly concerned about right away.

He played football for Duke, so that should account for something. So it shouldn't be too concerning. To me, at least.

As long as he doesn't send the football trophy to Arkansas State through UPS, we may be alright.

Thinking from the football side, we are kind of in the box we are in with the other G5s. We all know there is improvement to be had, but we don't know how that is obtained. Meanwhile, this conference SHOULD be a multiple bid basketball conference, and smaller conferences are making that happen. I think it is the right person for the right time.

Ehh, I disagree with this. We aren't in the same box as the rest of the G5. There's a clear hierarchy within the G5 and the Sun Belt is at the bottom. Now, we can argue all day long about how we are a stronger football conference than the MAC and CUSA, and we would be right, but perception wise, we're still below them where it matters. Bowl games, TV deals, and respect in the rankings.
I'd argue that we need a commissioner that understands that challenge and has at least some idea of how to elevate the Sun Belt to be, at the very least, a peer to the MWC and the AAC.
I don't think someone from a basketball conference is going to understand those struggles and challenges. Even if he is able to understand the challenges we're facing, does he have any idea how to address them? I don't see anything in his experience/background that tells me he does.

I absolutely agree that much improvement can be made in basketball but all I'm saying is that the bulk of our member schools would consider themselves football first including GS. Football experience for the Conference Commissioner should be a concern for at least 9 of the 12 schools in our conference.

Have you seen the TV deals for CUSA and the MAC? They are virtually identical as is the dollars

Yeah I'd agree that there's a clear G5 hierarchy but I'd say it's:
1. AAC
2. MWC
3. Sun Belt, MAC, CUSA in no particular order.
No doubt the Sun Belt was once at the bottom of that hierarchy, but I think we've evened ourselves with the MAC and CUSA for a 3-way tie at the bottom at this point.

The MAC's TV deal isn't as good as our, IMO. They have way more midweek games and hardly any Saturday games in the late season. They get a little more money, but it has killed their attendance.
The CUSA TV deal is weird. They're on Stadium, Facebook, CBSSN, ESPN+, and CUSATV and they don't get more money than our schools. Take a peak at their forum, they really hate having to track down which network their games will be on, if at all. Not uniformed and no more money than SBC.
Neither conference has better bowls than us.
Anyway, this is moot. The ESPN deal is like 7 years with the Sun Belt, so not on the horizon.
The biggest thing right now for Mr. Gill would be to work on the bowl lineup for 2020 and beyond.

Looks like the AAC will be joining us on ESPN+ with their new media deal.
https://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Dail...9/AAC.aspx
Quote:but the majority of basketball games and a significant number of the football games will go to ESPN+.
Of course, a lot more money. About $6 mill per team more.

Gill's previous weakness could be an asset as he seems to have super high expectations with little need for affirmation from those around him. Sounds like King Carl but with super high expectations.

Does this refer to all members except for Georgia State and the non-football schools? Not at all mad if so, just found that funny...although I may be misinterpreting...
