This is not true of us at all.

We're still a football first school despite what the last 3 years have looked like.

US? Basketball First? That’s just Crazy 01-wingedeagle Talk right there. Crazy Talk.

Now, Basketball just happens to be the First of the Big 3 we’ve shown significant improvement in, so I can see how an “outsider” might make the mistake of calling us a Basketball First School, but it ain’t so.

I don't even see how an outsider can see one year of improvement (or 2 of 3 years of being above average) can determine that a school is a basketball school.

Particularly when you look at our schedule.

Doh! Yes UTA indeed.

Was thinking of schools with both football and basketball.

I had to look back through the thread for context...my assumption wad that chiefsfan had meant to type Georgia State there...

i came across all these names when looking at former Sun Belt basketball champions. I guess for UT Arlington fans, the ones we miss are our old SLC foes, UNT and LT. We were in the WAC for a while with Denver, but not long enough to forge a rivalry. Were there some other schools formerly in the 'Belt that were never basketball champs?

Seriously, the Sun Belt should not have shown New Mexico State the door. Huge mistake, IMO. BTW, they are putting a whipping on GCU in the WAC championship game.

I'm fairly certain NMSU would join the SBC in two seconds flat if offered. It's not a "mistake" that the league couldn't easily reverse if it wanted to.

If NMSU could bring a traveling partner (UTEP), it would make sense for them to be all sports in the 'Belt. Too bad for both schools, that is unlikely to ever happen.

Yeh, having a school so far away from a travel partner for the rest of the conference wouldn't work. Y'all hated App's distance before CCU was added to help traveling.

But really... Would it?

Does NMSU (and for the sake of argument, UTEP) in the league all sports make us a two bid league for basketball?

If not, then would their football increase the conference's profile?

Because adding them would only mean splitting CFB money by more, increase travel for ALL schools, and making scheduling a little less fun (IMO) by having one less game per season (football) with the other division. Oh, and technically if they were all sports, then they would add more "western" voices to the discussions/votes for actions.

And while I'm all in favor of a more western oriented conference... It doesn't make sense to change that up for us (and UTA).

Originally, I wanted to invite NMSU all sports, and then an eastern school (or Missouri State, not eastern at all), but now that you get the same cash from the NCAA for 10 as you would for 12? I'm fine with 10. I mean, I don't think I'd want to even swap CCU for NMSU, on account I am a big fan of CCU's baseball. if NOTHING else changes, they are at least elite in a sport, while NMSU is not elite in any sport.

We had some great games with Hartwick soccer before they moved on. Really miss them.

I know there is scuttlebutt that Tech wants no part of being in the same conference, but since I'm talking pure hypothetical, how would the fans feel about it?

EDIT: If this is gonna make it a whole battle royale, then just delete this folks. Curiosity just got me pondering.

No offense to ULM but I’d trade them for tech in a heart beat, really don’t get into the UL/ULM rivalry as much as UL/tech and I’d say that safe for a lot of people in Lafayette. Also I don’t think tech and ULM could ever be in the same conference because of how close they are to each other, and three Louisiana teams would be way too much.

This is true, they left it in The WAC. I suspect if offered now, they'd be ALL IN.

Was NMSU ever offered the option of moving all sports to the Sun Belt? I think the Sun Belt only ever offered them as an affiliate member for football.

I think it was less NMSU leaving their basketball in the WAC and more of the Sun Belt never giving them the option to move anything but football.

I'm sure NMSU would have been all in at any point to move all sports to the Sun Belt. And still would be today, obviously.

Yes, but at the time, it was a good move. The WAC still had football. You may remember at the time of the move, Utah State was also a member of the Sun Belt.
