Not sure who else is out there, but hope that a good coach has already been lined up.

If any of you can read that article and honestly believe that JTIII would not be a home run hire for W&M you’re nuts.

-An article appears the day after Shaver's firing announcing JTIII interest in getting back in coaching. Have any of you even heard a peep about him since leaving Gtown? Not dismissing his abilities, just the timing.
- Huge and JTIII have a history from her time at Gtown. No evidence, but if Huge had decided to move on from Shaver Jan 1st, she called JTIII Jan 2nd to gauge his interest.
- He is a splashy name. She will want that. He runs a system that utilizes the same type of players incorporated by Shaver.
- $1.7 million buyout makes me believe she has a person in mind and perhaps a deal in principal in place.
- Unless it is a ridiculous salary, following a legend along with the recruiting limitations of W&M makes me think we are not a desirable destination for an up and coming young coach. Additionally, I don't think Huge would be satisfied bringing in an unknown.
- JTIII is a name coach coming from a blemished ending at Gtown. He will come here even at our low salary to try and reclaim his career. He sees the roster and the current talent.
- He will have complete support from his AD and a loaded roster right away. The roster is built to run his system. It is the perfect spot for him. I'd imagine any other options he has would be a complete rebuild.

There are two types of coaches who would take the WM job, Type 1 is a guy looking to repair his reputation as a good, solid Basketball coach, the other or type 2 is a young up and comer who would view WM as a springboard to a bigger job.

Both come with enormous questions, but that said, it isn't like the WM hoops job doesn't present questions either.

Plus we are forgetting the chance for a John Thompson to mentor one of the best big men in the country. The headlines write themselves.

Only if JT2 becomes a senior advisor or something.

I think I worry less about JTIII doing an admirable job replacing Shaver than I do about him putting together a good staff at our pay scale that can recruit the way we need. I'm sure that extra $1.7 mill would help in that regard. Shaver proved to be exceptional at finding promising young assistants willing to work for pennies. Like most long time coaches, my hope is JTIII has a network of former assistants, players, and USA basketball peeps to pull from.

JT2 is getting a little long in the tooth, but I'd imagine if his son was here, he'd be around. I'd imagine some words of advice would pass between him and Nate.

I wouldn't discount JTIII ability to mentor bigs either. He has spent a lot of time with USA basketball working with some of the best this country can offer. I also point to Roy Hibbert, whose development under his watch from freshman year to senior year was remarkable.

We don't pay new hires pennies anymore. *Most* old hats get pennies and a short leash.

I also think bringing in JTIII and his similar system leads to the highest chance of retaining our current players and keeping Cam Brown (who just started following the GW coach).

Huge needs to find 1.7M plus the salary upgrade for a new coach. I must assume her rational is increased attendance and NCAA pay days. JTIII would fit this mold as he would himself add to the crowd draw and his style of play would utilize the current talents of the team.

Maurice Joseph, who is the one following Brown, was just fired by GW.

Wow, that was fast. Is GW perhaps competition for JTIII?

I’ve heard that and, really, I think everything with regard to JTIII going anywhere has been solely unconfirmed message boards and rumors, at this point. I think he’ll end up somewhere, but I haven’t heard confirmation that he’s in the running for or met with anyone about any particular opening.

RE: BIg Rumor: John Thompson II New Tribe Coach?
This year's OOC schedule was not as difficult as it was presented last fall, excluding UVA. The season bore that out. We didn't come out ready to compete where we should have been with the core team returning, and our development was slow to get there.

As emotions work their way out from separations, inevitably there are valid reasons and fault on both sides for why relationships don't work and grow in their development. I can understand both sides and wish this had played out differently. Gotta move forward. As long as we are a midmajor, though, I still think an expected bar of making the NCAA basketball tournament(s) is misplaced.

I'm not sold, yet, on JTIII. If he does come to Williamsburg, though, my first hope would be that he uses his connections with Grundy and others to get, both, Nate and Justin into elite player camps this summer. Can't imagine anything would sell your existing players and potential recruits more than seeing development opportunities made possible through your coach.

Oh come on. This is a message board. Where else can we speculate and make off base assumptions? This way, when it happens, we look like geniuses. If not, it's just a message board. What do we know?

GW is a major build job right out of the gate, we are not.

Completely agree. W&M is the much more attractive job. Maybe less pressure for a young coach to produce right away there, though.

I don't get it. So now we should hire a coach to utilize the current talents of the team. We already had a coach who was the best qualified to utilize the talents of the team ...he recruited. I would actually understand it better if the new coach completely switched gears and went in another direction. It could mean that current players could leave but the new coach would take that chance and hope that they didn't.

I agree with you about last year's schedule. I was just reporting what was said. I was perfectly fine with who we played although I would have preferred one or two more of the games be at home.

And we think Huge is problematic. That is an entirely different level of issues.

Wow. Never heard about any of that. Pretty appropriate that his last name was Nero.
