RE: Bubble Watch - NC State vs Clemson (Wednesday, Noon)
The worst part about NC State is that they are going to get to thumb their nose at all of the hard work by all mid majors after being one himself prior. His team will get to go dancing with, literally, the worst non conference schedule in all of DI, #353.

Iowa is not far behind in their tactics, except they actually won more games, but their non-conference is ranked a putrid 332. St John's and Virginia Tech have also employed this strategy as the next two behind Iowa of teams like to make it in as an at large.

Unfortunately this is going to only get worse as the major conference all shift towards 20 game conference schedules, it gives them even less reason to play anybody out of conference. Rich get richer.

One other comment, it would be really nice if the close but not quite mid majors would actually show up and win a lot in the NIT. Lets get some all mid major final fours or 3 in the final four etc. As a group we need to put on a better show against the middling powers even at the NIT level (even if it is on the road). The more the mids win the NIT, the more it will force the committees to take them more serious (even though money will always talk in the end)

The NCAA couldn't care less about the results of the NIT. Hofstra and ODU met in the Quarterfinals of the 2006 NIT, and it changed absolutely nothing.

The last parenthetical is always going to be the case and it sucks. And people who do not watch mid-major ball who simply cry “well [insert team] plays in the ACC” (yet they acry about how SEC fans say the same during football) will never understand the rigors of winning nearly 30 games and not being considered unless you win your tournament. The 2010-11 VCU team comes to mind because they were considered a bad pick by anyone who had never seen them play prior to the tourney mainly because they didn’t win their conference tournament. The truth is college b-ball has a great talent spread and the beauty of the tourney is anyone can win at any time (see UMBC last year). Yet $ trumps all and the NCAA/middling P5 conference team fans don’t care a thing about mid majors if getting in means more $ in their school pockets.

Nor should they. I am talking at MSG in the semis and finals. Consistently. If those games include 3/4 mids they will start to have to consider mids. Quarterfinals mean nothing, you are correct. But currently mids tend not to make deep runs which does not help perception. Generally you are looking at 3 power teams in MSG.

In the past 10 seasons, there were 16 mid majors in the semi finals out of the 40 teams. 2016 was an anomaly and had all 4. That is including the WCC, A10 and AAC as mid majors. In 10 years, 5 mids have made the finals (2 in one year, so 3 in the other 9 years)

Past 10 years (finals teams bolded):
2009: SDSU, Baylor, Notre Dame, Penn State
2010: Dayton, Mississippi, Rhode Island, North Carolina
2011: Alabama, Colorado, Washington State, Wichita State
2012: Washington, Minnesota, UMass, Stanford
2013: Baylor, BYU, Maryland, Iowa
2014: SMU, Clemson, Minnesota, Florida State
2015: Temple, Miami (FL), Stanford, ODU
2016: George Washington, SDSU, BYU, Valpo
2017: Georgia Tech, Cal State Bakerfield, UCF, TCU
2018: Penn State, Mississippi State, Western Kentucky, Utah

My point being, the mid majors have not put pressure on the NCAA to think they are deserving of those extra bids through performance where they are related to, the NIT.

When mid majors have some sustained success like Witchita St,Gonzaga everybody labels them a major and they leave the scene. I have no clue what mids can do to be relevant to the committee but it appears that bad teams like State will continue to get invites. The deal with SOS means nothing to the process unless it is to tell a mid major they were left out because of SOS. State is the poster child for working the system and winning and Keatts is the ring leader of a broken deal. He did the same thing at UNCW with the schedule to pad his resume while complaining that he could not get other schools to play a UNCW. Now at NCSU in the ACC you hear the same BS about the schedule. If they get in I hope they get blown out in the first game.

LOFL. Yes, Keatts is the "ringleader". A second year coach at a P5 school. Give me a break. Your hatred clouds your judgement. Nobody even knows if NCSU will get in yet.

Maybe you could take a peek at the schedule Saint Brownell plays at Clemson? Loaded with such powerhouses as Lipscomb, The Citadel, Barton College, North Carolina Central, Sam Houston State, Akron, Nebraska, Charleston Southern. Had Brownell beaten Keatts and been considered "last 4 in", nobody would say a word about the padded schedule Clemson played to make their record look good. Try using facts instead of emotions some time.
