Your Changes to College Basketball Post-Season
Curious to see what changes others would like to see to the college basketball post-season which includes conference tournaments and March Madness, if you were in charge. Here's what I'd change:

1. Conference regular season champion gets the auto-bid. I'd allow the conference to determine the tiebreakers.
2. Conference tournament champion is guaranteed at least the NIT.
3. All 11-16 seeds would require play-in games expanding the field from 68 to 88.

What would you do?

If you lose 15 or more games you are not eligible for the tournament.

Add 1 game and make it a field of 128.

Use a numerical rating system, be it NET, Kenpom's ranking system, whatever. Rank all Division I teams 1-353.

All 353 teams make the tournament. All rounds prior to the Sweet 16 are played at the higher seed's court. Proceed from 16->8->4->2->1 as normal.

1 -- Giving the autobid to the regular season champ would be my top change, by far. Won't ever happen, though, because that ship sailed away long ago. The ACC has been giving its autobid to its tournament champ for about 50 years.

2 -- Makes sense.

3 -- I'd expand to 72, seed each region 1-18, and have 15 vs. 18 and 16 vs. 17 games on Tuesday/Wednesday of the first week. Whether it's 72 or 88, though, it won't happen until the guys who give the NCAA $800 million per year (CBS and Turner) want it to happen.

1-Back to 64.

2-Autobids to regular season champs.

Nothing else needs to happen.

NCAA tournament losers in the first weekend enter the NIT to create a combined tournament.

The same NCAA bracket from March is played over again in a pre season NCAA tournament in November. Maybe just through the first four rounds.

RE: Your Changes to College Basketball Post-Season
1) Conference Reg Season champs should be given autobid, not the hot team that won conference tournament.

2) Back to 64 teams - none of the play in games. We had those already. It was the regular season and conference games.

Y’all do understand that conferences decide who the autobid goes to, correct? If conferences wanted the bid to go to the regular season champion, then they could decide that. It’s not an NCAA rule.

I would either return the tournament to 64 teams or expand it to 128 with the first round games on-campus for the top 64 teams.

RE: Your Changes to College Basketball Post-Season
My innovation to the post season would be a 96 team tournament where regular season champs get in automatically (32 bids). Regular season champs would then sit out of their conference tournaments while the other members competed to qualify through the conference tournament (32 bids). The committee would then select 32 at large bids from the top remaining teams.

The top 32 teams receive first round byes. Each region would have teams seeded 1-24.

64 teams and you must win at least 20 games to be an at-large. Sorry, arbitrary number or not, winning should be prioritized over which conference you happen to lose in.

Any team finishing under .500 in conference play is ineligible for NCAA tourney unless they win conference tourney.

If you want to expand tourney, go to 96 teams with top 32 conference champs getting a bye.

Every once in awhile is fine but I want to see more games in arenas, especially Final Four games.

Keep it as is, maybe the 1st round losers get to play in an expanded NIT. One of the CBI or CIT is turned into a Vegas league.

Expand the Men's NIT to 64 teams like the Women's NIT. Drop every other post season tournament except the conference tournaments, NCAA and NIT. Drop the NCAA field to 64.

Your Changes to College Basketball Post-Season
Any conference whose team wins a first-round game gets two auto bids the following year.

1. Regular season champ
2. Conference tourney champ (or finalist, if regular season champ makes the finals)
3. Expand the field if needed to accommodate (though in practice this would really only add a couple teams most years)

Disclosure: C-USA with their single bid has won four consecutive first round games. (All technically ‘upsets’ by seeding) Two of those four years a worthy at-large candidate out of the conference has been ignored. By RPI we have zero.zero chance of an at-large this year even though the conference on balance is stronger this year than any of those other years.
