Marshall is Rutabaga
One first-round matchup is already set for Frisco on the men’s side.

(6) Rice will be taking on (11) Marshall on opening day for the right to advance and take on the yet-to-be-determined 3-seed.

Now many of you recall Rice handling the ‘Herd by a count of 74-69 back on Feb. 9, a game also played in the great state of Texas. Marshall was in the midst of a 4-game losing streak at the time.

Since then they’ve rebounded nicely to put together a winning streak of four games against the soft underbelly of their pretty little pod.

They have figured some things out, but Rice is also playing a better brand of ball now than they were back then.

But this isn’t about the X’s and O’s, and who’s got better defense and who’s hot from three-point range.

This is about Marshall. Marshall is Rutabaga. And Rutabagas never win opening round conference tournament games played over 800 miles from home.

Look it up if you don’t believe me.

Prediction: Rice 78, Marshall 71.

Currently, yes.

However Rice has a first round 6-seed clinched under following new rule:

Once all 12 seeds and brackets have been set for tournament play, the following reseeding will occur. (Note that this does not affect brackets, brackets remain fixed.)

In the event two teams face each other in the tournament, with the lower seed being undefeated against the higher seed in conference play, the teams seeds shall be swapped.

This reseeding will occur at each round once both teams are determined.

This rule shall be waived only in the case where the defending tournament champion shall not be required to swap with a lower seed, unless they have lost to the lower seed by a total of five points or more.

Oh I got your satire. Even the part about opening round games in the tournament, being that we have had a bye the last several years in the tournament. Well done. But you're still toast. We are exacting revenge on every team that beat us in destructive fashion. Rice will be a walk in the park for the new improved Herd.

Are you all trying to change championship game rules after all the results are known again? It did seem to work for you in 2013 football.

Yeah I thought about moving the game to Houston but that just didn’t seem sporting (!)

HEY we’ve had quite a few first-round byes ourselves lately (well technically they were more like ALL-ROUND byes) so playing a first-round game is new to both of us. But we are both PROUD POD CHAMPIONS and we’ll just have to see who’s the proudest and who’s the poddest!

As for your ‘new improved herd’... I figure when you played us earlier you was all like:

And now you be like:

I seem to recall a Marshall team traveling to Texas to play an underdog Rice team in a sport a few seasons ago...can't quite remember what happened but seem to remember seeing Rice in Memphis and something to do with Dak Prescott, but not sure what happened to Marshall that year. Just sayin' 05-stirthepot

Poorly handled, GoodOwl. See, we went on to manhandle our Power Conference opponent in the bowl game that year. But your memory must be somewhat faded since you lost that bowl game you remember fondly by, eh , almost 40 points?

But seeing this video causes me to miss real Marshall football. We've basically been Marshall-lite since 2015.

Eh, I give 2011-2014 credit for some pad-popping, enjoyable football in there. We defeated a Big East co-champion, beat a CUSA champion that finished Top 25, beat 3 P5 teams with 1 in a bowl game, had America's most prolific offense in 2012 (though undermined by our defense that), and I still contend we were the best G5 team in 2014.

Our football 2015-2018 was no where near the quality of 2011-2014. The early decade teams felt like they could at least belong on the same field as most any team in the country.

Not to turn this into a love fest, but I was almost as geeked to see the 2013 edition of Marshall escort ECU out of the conference with an swat on the butt and an elimination loss, just as we did with Tulane.

(((And not just because of the title game home field implications, either!!)))

One of the things that I think got me blocked on AAC.csnbbs is pointing out that Marshall has current scoreboard rights on every football member of the AAC, well except UCF (and knocking Wichita State out of the NCAA Tournament last year, we claim scoreboard on their non-football member, too).

BTW, in total ECU has collected about $3 million less than Marshall in league distributions since they moved to the AAC.

If you've been Marshall-lite, we've been Owl-lay-an-egg.

I was there at the last real CUSA Bowel game freezing my buns off at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis while Missed State made us look like a glorified high school practice team. Sadly, we were apparently very overconfident from our previous game, the aforementioned victory over your squad fro the CUSA Championship where ya'll seemed overconfident going in. I do think you took your disappointment from losing that contest out on your bowl opponent.

Nowadays, CUSA teams don't seem to get chances to play even mid-lower tier SEC teams in bowl games. I couldn't say which of our 5 bowl games is the conference flagship. I hope some day the pendulum will swing back to allow all teams who are conference champions to participate in meaningful post season games.

As to our upcoming basketball contest, I am pleased to see the progress our relatively new head coach, Pera, has made with a mostly Freshman squad. If he can but keep them together instead of the revolving transfer door, along with his new recruits, I think he has a chance to be a pretty good coach for our Hoops team. We seem to be a deeper team, or at least a more balanced team than in past years, so if you key on stopping one player, we have others who seem capable of stepping up. Hope we can keep learning how to close games out, especially when ahead. Should be a good contest for both teams.
