The League Standard
Just a little fun banter. Each team in our league brings its own strengths and weaknesses. As you look across the various league sponsored sports I thought it would be fun to see who you think the league bell cows are for sports. I'm certainly not in the know about all SBC sports; but here is a start ...............

Football: App State. Yes, the Mountaineers have only been in the league for a short time, but they have quickly grown into front-runners. That, along with their historical winning sets them up front in my mind.

Men's Basketball: Georgia State. It pains me as much as it did in the past WRT WKU to place them at the top; but they've earned it. Definitely the most consistent teams since joining the league.

Women's Basketball: UALR. Little Rock has had very solid women's basketball over the past several years. Any other contenders? Troy perhaps? Ark State??

Baseball: When you enter the conference with a National Championship in your hands, it's hard to argue there is a stronger program. That's exactly what Coastal has done, and they continue to bring strong baseball to the table. Is there a close second? Not sure there is!

Softball: Similarly to baseball, the most consistent program over the past 25 years has resided in Lafayette. A crazy streak of consecutive Regional appearances, multiple World Series appearances, and no other conference team comes close in league championships.

Track and Field: Arkansas State comes to mind when I think Track. I don't follow this sport as much, and there are probably a few schools that are strong here.

Golf: The Georgia schools. And why not. Georgia is the home of "The Masters". Shhhhh, someone is putting ............

Men's Tennis: Again, Georgia; mostly State? Troy is very solid this year, as is South Alabama. I know the Cajuns have fielded many solid programs over the years; but who is the best the past 5-10 years?

Women's Tennis: South Alabama and UTA are off to fast starts this year? Is this the norm? Are these the 1 or 2 at the top of the pecking order???

Volleyball: Texas State. Big sport here in Texas, and Tx St has fielded strong teams.

Women's Soccer: Texas State and Little Rock topped the charts this year. Historically, who is it?

Men's Soccer: Is this even a SBC sponsored sport? Georgia State tops the current list of 4 schools playing men's soccer.

Have fun!

RE: The League Standard
There are really only two examples I know of that I'd call league standards.
Baseball: Coastal
Softball: Cajuns (the most obvious one)

All of the rest...I either don't know or I'd argue there really aren't any.

On a football note, I'll bring up Troy and Ark State have won titles under multiple head coaches and no one else has done that.

No arguments with Ark State and Troy. Very consistent football over last 5-10 years. Multiple bowls.
I do think the league as a whole is better in football now than 10 years ago too.

APP is most certainly the league standard in football. Three titles in a row, and the highest overall winning percentage of all current and former SBC teams.

We have a different idea of what "league standard" is, then. The last two seasons don't erase Arkansas State's 5 titles in 6 seasons, doesn't erase Troy's 6 (?) titles, and doesn't erase our winning percentage being right even with App State's even when we had a 40-year hiatus and essentially started from scratch back in the 80s.

No they don't erase the accomplishments of other SBC programs. But Arkansas State's reign is over. They had a good run. Troy's run was strong, but came before Arkansas State's. It all moves in cycles. Someone will eventually dethrone APP and go on a tear through the Sun Belt. APP is currently the flagship program, and the gold standard for the league. That doesn't mean we don't have other programs that are strong, and have great histories.

Is Clemson or Florida State the current standard in the ACC?

05 is spot on it comes in waves. Hopefully our wave lasts another year or so, but we all know it will end.

In the SoCon days it was Furman, Marshall, GS, then App.

SBC has been North Texas, Troy, Ark St., App

RE: The League Standard
So after spending way more time doing this, i've calculated the average rank of each team over the past 5 years in each major sport. The list is as follows (average rank next to them, rounded to the nearest number unless it's bang on .5). I've only calculated since each team has been in the conference, so Coastal's are particularly skewed. They're listed as ranked, so where people have the same average position, they're still in order of who rounded lower.

Basketball:
GSU - 2
Southern - 3
Louisiana - 4
UTA - 4
ULM - 6
Coastal - 6.5
Texas State - 7
Arkansas State - 8
Little Rock - 8
South - 8
App - 9
Troy - 9

Football:
App - 2
Arkansas State - 3
Troy - 4
Louisiana - 5
Southern - 5
South - 7
ULM - 7
GSU - 8
Coastal - 8.5
Texas State - 9

Baseball:
Coastal - 1
Louisiana - 3
South - 3
Troy - 4
UTA - 4
Southern - 4.5
Texas State - 6
Arkansas State - 7
Little Rock - 7
GSU - 9
ULM - 11
App - 11

RE: The League Standard
Keep in mind TXST joined the SBC in 2013 and anything that occurred prior to that doesn't really occur to me while naming these:

Football: App State/Arkansas State - I'm calling this a tie
Men's Basketball: Georgia State
Baseball: Coastal. They've only been here two years but have been the best over those two years. Louisiana was the standard prior to the Chants joining.
Women's Basketball: Little Rock
Softball: Louisiana by a landslide
Volleyball: No clear top program
Men's Track: UTA
Women's Track: Texas State by a landslide
Women's Soccer: South Alabama
Men's Soccer: Probably Coastal since they joined?
Men's XC: UTA
Women's XC: No clear top program
Men's Tennis: No clear top program
Men's Golf: Georgia State
Women's Golf: Troy
Women's Tennis: Georgia State

So it looks like in consistency across the big 3 it's us and Louisiana.

It depends on your definition of consistency. If you mean consistently in the same place, i don't think this data as presented would get you any closer to that answer. I think the most glaring thing is, those teams that are consistently in first place rarely replicate that success in other sports. Which i assume means that a lot of resources are going into maintaining success in one sport while the rest are left on the backburner so to speak. I think it's obvious that nobody is trying to be bad at a sport (GSU is certainly putting as much effort into football as it is basketball), but that changing the quality of your program isn't something that happens easily or overnight.

EDIT:

So i decided to take the averages of those averages to figure out where everyone ranks overall in those big three sports. It goes as follows (again, rounded, but in order by unrounded);

Louisiana - 3
Southern - 4
UTA - 4.5
Coastal -5
Arkansas State - 6
GSU - 6
South - 6
Troy - 6
ULM - 8
TxSt - 8
App - 8
Little Rock - 9

Again, fits my hypothesis that if you're winning championships, you're only doing it in one of the big three sports. Which similarly means, if you're consistently near the top in all three, you're probably not often winning championships, you're just always close to winning championships. So i guess it depends which you'd prefer. App is clear leader of football but is close to last in everything else. And you're right, Southern is consistently decent at all three, but has won only one championship since joining (correct me if i'm wrong, that's off the top of my head). So it just depends on what you'd prefer i guess.

Everything is pretty accurate, although I'd say for women's basketball, Little Rock and Troy are both the bell cows. Troy has had four 20+ win seasons in the last 5 years, two Sun Belt titles, two NCAA bids, a WBI bid, and has beaten solid names like Villanova and Ole Miss in that time span.

Not a single regular season championship in that timeframe though to Little Rock's 2. And LR also has two tournament championships like Troy does. I think LR is the clear winner for women's basketball.
