That would certainly be easier. Especially if he didn't get yanked out of the game every time he made a good play.

R.e your comment: "Yea, I was thinking of just RBs but Stacey Robinson was fun to watch too...."

Oops. I guess I was thinking of a rushing QB in TheHardWay tradition (but years earlier), like Lynch and Harnish, who could also throw on the run, and who opened up chances for RBs like Dach.

In that offense he really was more of a RB than a QB I guess. I remember Marshall Taylor before him. He ran so much the announcer accidently said "Marshall keeper on the Taylor".

RE: 2019 OFFENSE
Since we have wandered down memory lane, Mark Keller who played during my time at NIU rushed for 1,719 years in 1973 and led the nation in rushing. I remember thinking that he would not have a chance at the rushing title after having an emergency appendectomy. This was before the days of small incisions and modern surgical techniques. Somehow and someway he shocked everyone and played the Saturday following his surgery.. He went on to play for the Chicago Fire in the USFL and later played three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He was as tough as they come.

Taylor ... ahhh, yes. Was it he or Robinson that got the nickname "The Wishbone Wizard"?

Anyway, I think Northern RBs have potential, but we really don't or can't see it until that key -- the QB -- is decided.

Wow, that's tough. I didn't start NIU fandom until 1985 so I missed that, and also the 1983 MAC title.

I remember constantly hearing "Cary Caliendo with the tackle" or some version of that, in my early days of watching games.

Kellar ... "The Carpentersville Cruncher." My first year as an NIU student as a transfer-in.

Anyhow ... back from Memory Lane (sorry, Old Guy comin' through).

What kind of backfield combination can we expect from this group? Speculative, since it's up to THammock & Company, but it's the off-season. Speculation is properly rife.

Yea, will it be the same 3 - Harbs, Jones, and Nettles? Or somebody else? I really have no idea.

When do practices start?

Chicago Fire was WFL. Chicago Blitz was USFL.

They just don't have a QB.

Elite running backs? Below average WR and no QB and you think the offensive talent is fine?

Tre, Jones, and Nettles is as good of a backfield they've had since the Wolfe/Harris days. The issue on offense isn't talent across the board, it's simply the QB position.

I'd have to lean more toward average RB unit as opposed to elite.

I’d go in between you two and say the RB position is very good. The WR group gets a slightly below average, but I think someone new emerges and gets it up to at least average by years end. TE is average. But all it takes at that position is one guy to make it great. Soragahn, Dehahn, Lersch? Who knows. Any word on Charles Robinson after a year of juco?

QB is below average. Let’s hope Childers fits the new offense better if he’s the guy this year. Some systems are a bad match for some players. 2nd to 3rd year can be a big jump for some qbs. Maybe Marcus surprises us.

I do kinda agree with MD in that the offense may take a year or two to become high powered. But I’d expect it to immediately be better than last year.

I'm reserving judgment on Childers just because of the coaching limitations and restrictions he was under. No QB would habe succeeded at QB the past two seasons at NIU. It's quite possible he is not the answer though but we need more data with Carey gone, and more a chance for him to blossom

Stingily would run over Harbison imo. Much bigger.....faster.

Cam went 203/1119 (5.5 YPC) and 193/971 (5.0) YPC as a senior. Tre just went 206/1034 (5.0 YPC) as a sophomore with doo doo at QB.

I don’t get it.

Bigger yeah, by about 10 lbs. faster? Nah. Their styles are similar but not identical. Harbs is sort of a Bouagnon/Stingily combo. Quicker/faster than Joel and Stingily, but less of a truck than Stingily. To me he’s a faster Joel with a touch of Stingily power.

Agreed. (yeah, it shocks me too). But a good point is a good point.

A trip down Memory Lane isn't all that bad when it reveals something. A good RB-QB is what makes the Northern offense work. We know they're out there, because Northern has had at least four of them: Taylor, Robinson, Harnish and Lynch. That did not always equal great success, because other elements of the team -- defense, special teams, etc. -- were not also there. And, of course, it depends on the opponents.

The problem wasn't/isn't Marcus Childers. It was Rod Carey's unwillingness to put others into that offense to find the next Taylor, Robinson, Harnish or Lynch. Carey locked in to what worked 2/3 of the time and stayed there. That isn't progress. It's maintenance.

Better teams at the G5 level, combined with that mentality, produced a 0-6 bowl record. It also took away whatever chance Northern had at getting back to an NY6 Access Bowl. Only great defense and great defensive coaching kept the program afloat, imo. (Example: NIU 7, BYU 6).

Hopefully, THammock & Company will find Northern that RB-QB ... if this is the offense they choose. A new OC means changes. Then maybe we'll see what the other RB's can REALLY do.

But alas .... my opinion is no better than anyone else's.

RE: 2019 OFFENSE
I'd like to hear some more thoughts about the Oline. There were holes in the line last year(IMO) and we lose the 2 best in Sharping and Shively. I'm ok with Steckler, Perez, and Patton being back. Who steps up for the other 2 spots? Pure speculation on my part(I have no inside knowledge), but read that Cox redshirted, but traveled with the team. I'm thinking he is heir apparent at one tackle spot.

Looking at the rest of the Oline roster, there are a lot of upperclassmen in this group(5). But from what I've seen(or not seen) haven't proven themselves. Who steps up?

Wish I knew ... and so do about a zillion other Huskie fans. Got a feeling the spring game -- not that far off -- is going to be really, really, really really popular. Hope so, because it will also indicate whether the boost from the THammock hiring has legs and will extend to the fall.

Sorry. Not much of an answer. Anyone who's followed the OLine?

If someone steps up I’m hoping it’s Cox and/or Hawn. I do like Perez. But Veloz is just so so. Steckler is ok. This is a big hope, but if Hawn and Cox could hold down the tackle spots, move steckler to guard and have Veloz and anyone else battle it out for the other guard spot.

It’s a big question mark for sure.

Yes, I do hope Hawn steps up, although it was a bit of a disappointment that the coaching staff felt the need to move Steckler at left guard over to right tackle last year. My barometer for the oline is whether or not Veloz starts(although I think he will). If there is enough talent in the starting 5 to displace him, that would be a good indicator.
