I remember a couple of years ago it was mentioned that the updated Master Plan had converted the Maglev into a pedestrian bridge over Hampton Blvd. Not sure what ever came of that.
That was my senior design project. I'm sure I'm not the first or last to propose it, but I did have to sign away any rights to the design. I'm sure they do that for most projects though. Still, they have a perfectly good design for it sitting on the shelf somewhere.

This post reminds me, did anyone have Mr. Hanke as a public speaking professor? He would always call the monorail on campus the "world's most expensive umbrella" lol
At this point the monorail is a failed project, which sucks but They totally should convert it into a bridge since it goes over Hampton and runs through the middle of campus. I've always thought they should have art students put murals on the columns of the track, bring some more uniqueness to campus, a la this bridge in Lima Peru I've always admired:
It would be better if they tore it down. But if that doesnt happen, Im always a fan of public art and like the idea. How hard can it be to tear that thing down? Or are they still hoping the project can be revived? FWIW, it was never a monorail, it was a partnership with a research company to develop cost effective magnetic levitation technology for mass transit. The maglev at ODU was the test track. If it had been successful it would have been a huge win for the university.

I read they were continuing the research, I wonder if there has been any progress in making it actually viable?

I had Mr. Hanke for public speaking! Fantastic professor, one of my favorites that I had. Great guy and really helped me out with speaking in front of an audience (people who know me know I'm pretty awkward). I'm fairly certain he's still teaching at ODU too!

I'd wager that a pedestrian bridge would go unused because you have to walk up a set of steps....

They've surveyed the students in the past and basically this is what they've found.

Be neat if they could include viewing of baseball games somehow on top of the building, but mechanical has to go somewhere.

They could put a nice outdoor cafe on the back of the building with a Starbucks or something they probably won't need the wind screen on the outfield fence with the building there so people could sit outside and watch the game.

The rear of the building shows a outdoor deck that overlooks the field.

Yes, there is a $3.5 million renovation for the volleyball competition facility, a $5 million webb renovation for improved dining services and they are planning a new $82 million Health Sciences Building that is going over near McDonalds but I am not sure of the exact location.

RE: ODU Master Plan
Im glad to see they put plenty of windows in this building at least. ODU buildings often look like sterile warehouses when you ride by them on the street. A few architectural elements or embellishments wouldn't hurt though. Some blue banners on poles off the sides or flags or something. I think ODU has a chance to do something great with the new Webb Center. I hope they don't just make a big brick box.

I received an email today that the RFQ for the Webb Center project will be released next month.
