Kent State @ Central Michigan
The Golden Flashes will be in Mount Pleasant for a showdown with the Chippewas on Tuesday. Central Michigan is 6-6 in the MAC, which puts them 2 games behind Kent State and Toledo and still within striking distance of a top 4 finish.

A similar contest is taking place at the Stroh Center on Tuesday as Akron, fresh off their loss at Ball State, looks to keep their top 4 aspirations alive against 10-2 Bowling Green. It would be a mistake to get too caught up in the outcome of this one because there is plenty of basketball to play. But, if the Flashes can beat CMU on their own floor and the Zips can knock off BG, the Flashes.....well, back to Central Michigan.

The Chips average just over 83 points per game and are 11-2 at home this season. They feature a handful of players averaging double digit points per night. As if that isn't enough, the good guys follow this one up with a showdown at #25 Buffalo on Friday.

burden, I think its time to let that money from the Rockcino ride...

Kent State 81
Central Michigan 78.5
Jaylin Walker with one of those Michael Reghi...virtuoso performances!

One of my worst fears. A close game without Avery. Hope we pull it out.

Despite horrible outside shooting, we really weren't that bad. Whittington had it going and we were getting what we wanted. Once we took the 5 point lead, for some inexplicable reason, we couldn't get a stop. Still had a chance when Walker went to the line to shoot tech FT. He split and Whittington had a terrible possession (turnover) and then it was lights out.

We blew a big chance tonight. Toledo and Akron lost and we were playing CMU. Could've been alone in 3rd with a three game cushion for a bye. Instead we're heading into Buffalo one game up on CMU for 4th and they now hold the tie breaker.

Actually it’s quite explicable.

This is a terrible defensive team.

Defensive rebounding (or lack thereof) and CMU shooting a very high percentage from three vs. our horrible shooting was the difference. Idk if something is wrong with Walker physically but we can't keep letting him take this many shots if he's off. Coming in he was shooting 28.4% overall and 26.7% from three in his last 5 games and after tonight that's going to drop. That's gotta be the worst shooting stretch of his career.

One good take away from tonight. Duling played really well in his 14 minutes. He was active on defense like he normally is but only 2 fouls in 14 minutes is pretty good for him. The 8 points, 4 rebounds, and high energy were big. He could be an x-factor down the stretch.

The sign of a good player is getting teammates involved when your shots aren’t falling. JW had two assists tonight. Two. I’m not saying he isn’t a good player, but I think he needs a much shorter leash.

I don't know if I have ever seen a team (in the three point era) win a game when they shot 7% from 3 point land. It probably hurts Walker not having Avery in there - still he's had these multi game cold streaks of bad games before in his time at KSU

Agreed - I thought Duling was great.

My sentiments exactly. JW is infatuated with the super athletic shots that he has had the talent of making. The problem is that when shots are not going down, many players have forgotten the sound principles of good shot selection and making. When the turning, falling backward shot is not working, IMO, a shooter needs to make a few shots with the body squared up to the bucket. Opposing teams have JW's number. He needs to work on passing.

He might need to work on his passing but I think it’s too late to help us. All we can hope for is he gets hot for his last 3 weeks at Kent.

The team only had 7. A sign of a good player is still impacting the game even if your shots not going down. Fortunately Walker has been doing that. He was our leading rebounder last night, was 10-12 from the line, and only had one turnover. He's actually still been playing pretty well outside of his shooting the last 6 games. His rebounding has been there all year which has been big since we're lacking size. He's 6'1" and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.3 rpg.

If you want to single out the assists sure he could do better. That's one of the bigger holes in his game but it's also something that likely hasn't been his primary focus during the off-season as that's Avery's role on the team not his. If he was a great passer but only showed it when his shots weren't going down that would frustrate me.

Personally I've always thought the sign of a lazy player is someone who does something well that he normally doesn't do well when he's not scoring. If you can rebound, rebound every game. If you can defend defend every game. If you can set teammates up with easy baskets do it every game. If you're a great player don't let your shooting affect your effort in other areas.

RE: Kent State @ Central Michigan
I challenge that KSU is a terrible defensive team. Currently the Flashes are rated eighth, with BGSU & UB fifth & sixth respectively. Could they have played a better game defensively? For sure. But you must give CMU some credit as they are the second best team, offensivley, in the MAC, so something had to give, especially playing at CMU. Consistency is more likely the culprit. Hey, the defensive game against EMU (58 points) was excellent.

Collectively, this board tends to be overly critical of the play of the Golden Flashes, not so dissimilar to a parent wanting his kid to do well. But when you consider how this team has been cobbled together (ingesting five new players, losing two bigs, & for the past three games losing your PG) having a mis-step at CMU can be forgivable.

Overall, this team, & most of the teams preceding this one, are closer to being a silk purse as opposed to sow's ear. How many of us would have predicted a 20 win season? Kudos to the coaching staff.

Try to enjoy the rest of the season. This team is fun to watch & they really do try.

Agreed also, and this is probably Sendy's best coaching job.

Teams in the MAC shoot the ball ON AVERAGE at a 47 percent clip against Kent. Worst in the league. That means one out every two shots goes in. The fact that number is so high after a sample size of 13 games means it is legit. It also means you are giving up open threes, jump shots and wide open looks in the paint. Even the terrible Zips, who, in 13 league games have shot the ball at a league-worst 37 percent had a 48 percent night against us.

Inability to recognize and then get out on 3 point shooters has often been area of weakness for the Golden Flashes.

I won't say you're wrong but there's more to defense than just FG%. We're second in the MAC in forcing TO's so that helps. We're dead last in the MAC in defensive rebounding though. That to me has been our biggest shortcoming defensively. We're only getting 68.5% of the available rebounds on the defensive end. That's not very good and could be an indicator that our turnovers are inflated because we have more chances to force turnovers. Oddly, we're a very good offensive rebounding team.

To your point about opponent FG% here's a breakdown of how we've fared. In 8 of the 13 games we've allowed the opponent to shoot a higher percentage than their conference season average. Two games stand out as the worst. The first EMU game they shot 65.4% (19.5% above their average). Then the Akron game they shot 48.1% (10.5% above their average). If you count those as outliers the opponent has shot above their average in 6 of 11 remaining games and our opponents are shooting 45.1% which would only be 9th in the MAC. So I think it's safe to say you're right, while our bad opponent FG% might be inflated slightly, we're still below average in this regard.

The best way to sum it all up is figure out where we rank in Points allowed per defensive possession. Easy to do by assuming 0.475 as the conversion factor for FTA to POS. We're giving up 0.923 points per defensive possesion which is 9th in the MAC. Only CMU (0.924), OU (0.941), and WMU (0.984) are worse. So bottom line, I agree with you, we're a bad defensive team.

With that said, Frederick is the GOAT at hedging. Not even joking about that. He's probably one of the best hedging bigs we've had. If someone kept track of good hedges per defensive possession he'd be making the league look dumb.
