How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
I would be interested in seeing the logic a politician is using to demand higher minimum wages on the one hand but will turn around and ALSO demand increased access to the American Economy thru lax border security and higher levels of illegal immigration. Supporting these 2 policies is contradictory. I know that a number of politicians know this. What I don't get is those politicians who fail to grasp this concept.

There is no logic to it. Logic would require people actually capable of thinking which most lefty voters don't possess.

They only hear the dog whistles of "social justice"

NO WALL!

$15/HR!

The useful idiots only hear what they WANT to hear and don't give a second thought how they affect one another.

Keep them dumb, keep them dependent, keep them voting"D".

RE: How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
There's actually pretty strong logic to it. Those people who get their wages bumped up will vote democrat. Those who get fired and go on welfare will vote democrat. And as soon as they get illegals the right to vote, so will those illegals. Add those voting blocs to the democrat side, and they will be winning elections for a long time to come.

"Keep 'em dumb, keep 'em poor, keep 'em depending on handouts, and you can keep 'em voting democrat."

At least until they run out of somebody else's money. Or, more likely, run out of somebody elses.

RE: How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
There is perfect logic to the decision process for a politician.

In calling for a $15 minimum wage, the Democratic politician is catering to the millenials, the inner city, the unions, and generally the entire constellation of disaffected. That is, their current core constituencies.

In calling for more immigration, the Democratic politician is catering to the current Latino populace at large, is looking to grow their base in the future since the children of illegal immigrants will ostensibly break Democratic (the numbers show this is overwhelmingly so), and hopes to speed up the process of putting more Democratic on the rolls with the call to root them in place with amnesty or a pathway to citizenship. That is, they are looking to buttress the future core constituencies.

The shoices to support both are an easy peasy decision for the liberal/progressive bloc. It does not matter that the policies are not reconcilable economically, all that matters is growing their voting base.

RE: How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
I understand why a politician would support both as a means to generate more votes at the polling station. Perhaps the better question is why are people willing to ignore the contradiction and throw support behind these kind of candidates despite a good chance they are metaphorically slitting their own throats? Is the draw of welfare that strong today that low skilled progressives are only too happy to go on the dole so that illegals can crowd them out of the workforce? I realize that for illegals it's a no brainer. However, for lower skilled workers here or younger people who can be easily laid off and replaced by H1B visa entrants (I understand that this is legal) or illegals - shouldn't they understand that this is a losing proposition for them? Are people really so stupid as to not understand the ramifications of making a low/unskilled job more expensive likely results in automation of the task?

This is mostly rhetorical, but I can't help but ask.

RE: How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
All of this is so crazy to me! We are literally watching the 2 major political parties exchange their positions as it pertains to labor. The majority of the GOP (voters) are becoming little different than the "union yes" type of democrats from the 70s and 80s. The Dems are the ones who ultimately are looking to "bust unions" figuratively by driving up the price of domestic labor in order to make it easier to have "guest workers" swoop in to take these low skilled jobs away and/or encouraging more corporations to pursue off-shoring/automation for their business practices.

IMHO, it's shocking.

RE: How do you reconcile demand for higher min wage vs more illegal immigration?
the whole notion of a minimum wage is a ploy. the endgame is actually a maximum wage, above which all income is confiscated by government and reallocated "for our own good". and that maximum wage is probably about $30k/yr.

they just haven't quite dumbed us down enough -- compliments of the liberal infested public school indoctrination system -- to get it by us. yet.

What's really shocking is that those low on the totem pole scale of wages are so dense that they don't realize they are supporting their own economic demise.........

Ah, I shouldn't really be surprised - I've found that all too often people focus so much on Friday's paycheck, they see next to nothing beyond that.....

Raising the minimum wage to $15 will increase demand for illegal immigration... or "under the table" labor for $10/hour.

Raising the minimum wage to $15 will also effectively eliminate teen employment. How is my 14-15 year old son that has never worked a day in his life supposed to land a job for $15/hour?

That's already here. I have a friend who owns some fast food franchises and he refuses to hire teens (except if they are immigrants). They struggle to show up to work and when they do they don't work hard enough.

Those fast food jobs that 15-16 years started out with a generation ago are now being offered to 18-21 year olds (if they are not immigrants) because they are more responsible.

The future is going to belong to kids like ours. In a world centered on instant gratification they play the long game with a solid plan in hand.

My oldest started at a fast food joint right after he graduated HS. Although technically part-time he's never not worked full time hours filling in when someone calls out. He's constantly complaining about the lack of work ethic among his peers.

The franchise owner wants to fast track him to a management position but my son is leaving there soon. He's taking a seasonal position with a campground to see if that's something he'd like to do for a career.

Might want to throw in how importing large number of low skill worker squares with a future in which 20-40% of all low skill repetitive jobs will likely be replaced by robotics and A/I technologies over the next 10-15 years. We dont need more low skill workers.

That's a problem. So these kids (the one's who don't land a job at the family's business or through wealth connections) leave the house with no tangible work experience. Even mowing lawns in the neighborhood for cash under the table now comes in direct competition from Pedro. No wonder every HS kid in the neighborhood either plays Fortnite 40 hours per week or is getting into booze and hard drugs. We can plan to play the long game, just not sure how the heck he is supposed to get that first job.

What no one ever talks about when referring to a $15/hr min. wage is the poor bastard that has worked his/her way up from the bottom at a job for the past 3-4 years and then all of a sudden he/she is making the same as the person working under him/her that was just hired on after dropping out of high school.
