Where does GCU go from here with basketball? Hope they become the second mid major program ever to do what Gonzaga does while they are in the WAC for the long term?
Football can do what Liberty is doing, buy your way to relevance nationally. Liberty is doing it with football where exposure is bigger and conference affiliation isn't needed if you have money. If that's not GCUs priority in athletics, and it's fine if it isn't, then I wouldn't start football. But if I was in charge or a GCU fan I'd want them to try and be the next BYU or even more. Scheduling wouldn't be hard either.
Football doesn't mean giving up on basketball either. Liberty, who has next to no bball history, is building a brand new arena
GCU would like to be like Gonzaga. Liberty would like to be like BYU. It would make more sense for GCU to use their resources to build themselves into an Olympic sports power. It is feasible and it would cost a lot less. GCU won this year's men's soccer tournament, they played in the WAC championship game in basketball last season and they have won two straight regular season titles in baseball. Football is expensive and not easy to win at. With the Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State, does the area really need another football team?

Don't forget the Hotshots and the Rattlers for other football options as well as UofA to the south.

In the 12th largest market in the US? I think they'd be fine. Unless the current GCU basketball fans wouldn't transfer over for football

Seems unrealistic to try and be Gonzaga. No school as a mid major has been able to sustain that success. Either they fall off or go to a high major, which I don't see GCU having an option of.
Either way football would do more than basketball, but what GCU currently is doing is not a bad strategy by any means

Given all the big schools essentially squeezing mid-sized (or mid-regarded) schools out of the sport, or certainly out of relevance, it really needs to be said that football would not necessarily do more than basketball.
Over in the BW (sorry, everyone), is there a rivalry bigger than- get this- Poly v UCSB in men's soccer? Look at the numbers. Cal Poly football may have higher ticket prices, but they can't sell out their stadium. If a Big West school can get national attention using a nickname that isn't even their mascot for a specific sport, it demonstrates football is not a be-all and end-all. Certainly not anymore.
Plus anyone guaranteeing Gonzaga will never be pushed off some perceived perch should look at the old Big East for, er, inspiration.

Check back on Gonzaga after Mark Few retires.

Well...they said the same thing when Dan Monson retired.

The difference is Gonzaga is currently competitive with most P5 programs coaching salary wise. Once Few steps down, the Gonzaga job will be coveted by a lot of very good coaches.
Back in the heyday of the Big West, schools were not paying coaches as much (relative to the era) as Gonzaga is paying Few now. And, UNLV's success was propped up by a lot of Tarkanian's "behind closed door shenanigans". No coach was ever going to maintain the level of UNLV's success running a clean program; given the program Tark left behind.

It's a strong possibility that there will be "another Gonzaga" (another school) when Mark Few retires.
One of the points is that basketball is not as resource-intense as football. Besides, traditionally, "basketball schools" have rarely been football schools. When a Michigan Fab Five appears back in the day, that was saying something.
