RE: It’s official. No football at Little Rock
ORU is stuck.

They had a bad experience with the Southland, which is too bad, because it's a pretty good geographic fit.

The WAC is a stretch. I can't see them signing up for multiple flights to the West. Yes, Tulsa has a decent-sized airport, but it's not a hub. Going west from there usually involves a stop in DFW, Denver, or maybe Phoenix. They may have one direct flight per day to LAX. Vegas isn't an issue for them, but the multiple flights to the West probably are.

ORU's dream would be to join the MVC, where cross-town rival Tulsa spent most of its history. There are many reasons why that won't happen, one of which is that the MVC would rather move east than west.

At this time, the Summit is the best option for them. They're going to be in a one-bid basketball league regardless, and their baseball team has a great chance to qualify for the NCAA tournament most years in the Summit.

As for the original subject, the UALR consultant recommended correctly. Football is a bad idea for them, for all the reasons mentioned above.

Tulsa airport offers 19 non stop flights 6 of which are to WAC destination cities. LA,Vegas, PHX, KC, StL, Chicago. Rest would have to be connection flights. Seattle, NMSU, UTRGV, and bus from SLC to St, George.

I’m not sure how the Atlantic 10 losing two schools would open up a spot for ORU. There’s no guarantee the Atlantic 10 would backfill the 13th and 14th spots, and if they do, would they really want to go that far west again? Loyola may not want to be in a league anchored along the East Coast. If anything, I could see the Atlantic 10 picking up two of Vermont, Stony Brook, Albany, and UMBC - the first three have been the strongest in America East the past decade, and UMBC gets the league into Maryland, which should be of interest to all of the Virginia members.

They make great travel partners with ArkSt and Texas St. Without the BBonly schools the travel schedule would be more difficult. Texas State just had over 6k at their home game against UTA.

I like this. I think the schools involved might like this, at least in terms of travel and reasonable rivalries. If PFW goes to the Horizon maybe TAM-Corpus Christi moves in (who from the Dakota's wouldn't mind a trip now and then to Corpus in the winter? At this very moment it is 74 degrees in Corpus; in Fargo it is -3 degrees with a -27 windchill.)

I started following college realignment because there was a danger that schools I like to follow, generally in the Summit & MVC, could have ended up homeless. I just want some (intelligent) stability. However, deep down I fear I will never live to see it.

They also wanted to go to divisional play and ORU was going to be forced into a division with C Ark and the LA schools, which ORU was not pleased with as it meant longer travel or very little Texas presence.

ORU did not forfeit any games. The NCAA issued a waiver for ORU and Stephen F. Austin. The possibility of forfeit was due to scheduling actions by the individual universities; not by Southland Conference actions. All but two conference programs scheduled within the NCAA guidelines in the first year of Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word's transition to DI. Stephen F. Austin and ORU did not. See the linked article from CBSSports which tells the full story. https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...ple-games/

-------------------

I have seen nothing indicating how the the conference would have split into divisions. The last time it did, Lamar was part of the Eastern Division. It would have made just as much sense, if not more, to put Lamar, 30 miles from the Louisiana state line, in that division. If ORU wanted a Texas presence, ORU has contact with NO Texas teams except via OOC scheduling now.

For the SLC, the majority of the universities are located near larger cities. Trips to the Houston (3 SLC members), New Orleans (3 SLC members), Corpus Christi (1 SLC member), Little Rock (1 SLC member), and San Antonio (1 SLC member) areas are a lot easier from Tulsa than trips to some of the Summit League cities. Travel conditions are generally better in the winter south of Oklahoma than traveling north.

If you found a nearby ambitious FCS call up couldn't they serve a similar purpose? That way you'd be splitting money with some teams that actually contributed to the football inventory rather than having UTA/UALR collect G5 money for their non-existent football programs.

Why would the Summit expand their footprint for those crummy schools?

For the sake of survival and stability, which would be good things for a conference that not too long ago this very fanboard had on "deathwatch".
In this part of the country, there are only so many options. No one is leaving the Missouri Valley to join the Summit. The WAC stretches 2000 miles from Chicago to LA. This proposal strikes me as very workable. Maybe not ideal if I was the King of the NCAA and could just decree the conference I want. But if UTA and UALR are not feeling the love in the Sunbelt, this could work (knowing that this is all hypothetical).

Have you looked at a map of SBC schools? Texas State and Ark State are 10 hours apart, there’s no way in hell that they would be travel partners. In this scenario you would have to split the Louisiana schools apart (3 hour drive between the two). ULM would pair with Ark State (5 hour drive) and ULL would go with Texas State (6 hour drive, straight shot down I-10).

The Sun Belt approved full shares for UTA and UALR despite the fact that they do not have football. It's not like the two schools are somehow swindling the conference out of money.

UTA and UALR do not receive the same conference payout that the football playing schools do

Those would be pairing travel partners if you replaced the two non-football schools. With MVC tumbling down the men's basketball strength, I do think some public schools want a golden ticket out of the conference.

I was worried about the MVC a few years ago when Creighton and Wichita left and were replaced by Loyola and Valpo. I feared MO State, Illinois State, and UNI were considering their options. But the 2 adds look like they are working out well. To my eyes the MVC is better top to bottom with more teams bunched in the middle. No one at MVCfans.com is talking about schools leaving. The conversation there is all about adding Murray State. If MO State leaves it won't be because the MVC is down but simply because FBS aligns with their institutional aspirations. (But maybe they should get better as an FCS football team first: they've had only 4 winning seasons in the last 20 years with modest records of 6-5.)

We don't need two more football members draining resources from the other schools. That's primarily why the Sun Belt gave Idaho and New Mexico State the boot. The Sun Belt is fine at ten for football.

I don't believe there's a single institution in the Sun Belt that is wanting to add additional schools to the conference.

I consider it a swindle in the first degree. UTA and UALR probably demanded this cash in exchange for admitting all the Eastern Teams into the conference. Leeches.
