RE: Baseball Recruiting
San Jac was just place on probation by the NJCAA for the Spring 2019 Semester. Is it too late to recruit one or two of their best players-- perhaps an outfielder or two?

Does that mean the “death penalty” or postseason ban or what?

According to the statement, they cannot play the 2019 Spring Semester season at all. It's a recruiting violation apparently.

Well the guy who committed above (and most of the guys who’ve committed lately) is a HS Class of 2020 player.
With regard to rankings, I really don’t know where to find a reputable source. There’s not enough money in it and too many of the best players go to the minors.

I don’t remember Rice having a top 25 class nationally in the last 10 years. And we won lots of conference championships during that period so you can’t just go by that.
Our classes recently lag behind A&M, UT, TTU, TCU, UH in state. Don’t know if we’ll get many full classes better than UT and A&M but I think we should aim for 3rd in the state and not 6th or below.

The 2020 class is shaping up as one of our very best ever; rivaling the greaat 2004 incoming class (CSC, Bell, Bramhall, Savery, Friday, Zornes, Lehmann, Dodson and Henley), assuming they all matriculate. My concern is with next year's incoming class, where we desperately need to add a couple JUCO proven talents at pitcher and OF.

We have NEVER had a Top 25 class as ranked in the year they matriculated; not even the great 2004 class. In our glory years, our ranking was typically in the mid-30s to low 40s. That's when The OG was still adept at bring in the diamond in the roughs.

RE: Baseball Recruiting
No matter what our class is ranked, I think we can all agree that recruiting is seemingly going a lot better now than it had under ~post-2012 Graham. Whether that’s due to the Rice Investment, better assistants, less negative recruiting, or what, I’m not sure... But it’s good to see.
The pitching recruiting doesn’t seem THAT much different than under Graham but definitely seems as if we’re getting more sought after position players.

That's not true. Many of Wayne's early classes were in the top 25. Sometimes the top ranked players weren't necessarily the best eventual prospects but we signed quite a few players in the 90's who were top-10 national talents (Jose Cruz Jr. and Steven Bess were two who came to mind). I used to write press releases all the time talking about our highly rated recruiting classes, so trust me you need to just clarify your time standards a bit.

We just landed one, as Corey Barton tweeted his animated dancing Owl. No idea yet who it is that committed. Hopefully, it's for next year's incoming class.

That’s the level of guy we need to get on campus. Hope we see him fall 2019.
Sounds like an exciting get. Low 90s already (with a quality 11-5 curveball and changeup with movement), and with a high leg kick and arm motion, it would appear he has a very deceptive delivery, making it difficult for batters to pick up the ball. Also love the 6'5", 205 lb measurements-- as with Canterino, this is the prototypical physique for a power pitcher.

RE: Baseball Recruiting
Today is also baseball signing day. I can't tell if these are new names or repeats from earlier in the thread.
Matthew Santos, a LHP/1B from Cy Creek, and Jack Conlon, a RHP from San Jac (originally Sugar Land Clements) have signed with Rice. Conlon might be a big pick-up - he originally was a 4th round draft pick out of high school (went to A&M for one year and then San Jac this year), and Perfect Game has his top velocity at 94.

RE: Baseball Recruiting
Conlon is definitely a big pickup-Concern would be if he has a good season at San Jac he could leave for MiLB before he gets to campus... But that's a good problem to have.

That's the 2019 ace Bragga was looking for....and he was definitely looking for an experienced one out of the JUCO ranks.
