Projected Regional Team

UNC Wilmington

UNC Wilmington has made five NCAA trips in the past six seasons and has the team in place to add to that mark in 2019. Look for sophomore Greg Jones (.278/.412/.370) to lead the attack this spring. A premium athlete with blazing speed (6.34-second 60) and exciting bat speed, Jones drove in 54 runs last year and also stole 16 bags. Jones has all the tools to be a high-round draft pick as an eligible sophomore this spring if he can put it all together. He has continued to improve defensively at shortstop, though the Seahawks got him plenty of work in center field in the fall.

The Seahawks may not have as much power as some of their former squads but this edition should have more speed and athleticism. Look for behemoth 6-foot-7, 230-pound OF Kep Brown (.267/.323/.459) to be a power source after becoming a big bat down the stretch last year. He has a tendency to fight off good pitches and then pound mistakes. He will play right field and could also see time at first base. Sophomore Riley Zayicek (.306/.405/.472) has battled injuries off and on his first two seasons in Wilmington. After a good fall, he will likely bat in the middle of the order and split time between left, right and DH. Another player to watch is sophomore Noah Bridges (.247/.307/.318). After learning on the job as a freshman, he is an intriguing prospect with speed and power. Look for outfielder Chris Thorburn to have an impact this spring. The freshman was one of the surprises of the fall with great reads in the outfield. Brooks Baldwin is another freshman who will play somewhere, with first base being the likeliest destination. The versatile performer can play all four infield spots and as a switch hitter, he projects as an impact player. Cole Weiss (.264/.335/.357) can play third, shortstop or first and is the team’s best defender. Jackson Meadows (.252/.302/.272) is an aggressive hitter who can handle the bat. He should start at second. Zach Bridges (.071/.278/.071) is a really capable defensive catcher who will get opportunities to improve offensively.

The strength of the UNCW club figures to be a pitching staff that could go 12 or 13 deep. Look for Luke Gesell (3-2, 3.37) to move into the rotation after a great year in the bullpen. He will pitch 89-92, touching 94, pitching with a down angle and has a solid slider. Redshirt freshman Brody Lawson is a pitchability righty who will sit 88-91. Sophomore RHP Landon Roupp (0-3, 3.58) pitched on the weekend last season and is a ground ball machine with his three-quarter arm slot. Another sophomore RHP, Gage Herring (2-1, 2.68) was a weekend guy a year ago. He has a max effort delivery with some deception, along with an 88-92 heater that can bump 94 and a very effective slider. Henry Ryan (3-0, 1.11) is a key in the bullpen. He brings a 92-96 fastball and a closer mentality. Fifth-year senior Blake Morgan (2-1, 3.60) is the top lefty option. He can fill a variety of roles and will get the ball a lot.

Yes. Except for the tournament final which should be on College Sports Live. All home and road conference games should be on CAA.TV

Glancing at our non conference schedule, all of the road games are with teams that should be on the ESPN app, either through ESPN3 or ESPN+

Best freshman so far in the preseason is Matt Suggs,he could earn a spot with his bat. Baldwin-not a factor and no place to play him that I can see.

If so, WTH else would he need to show for you to think it would translate to the next leve?

He also played at Whiteville on a pretty good team for a 1A school and the baseball in 1A high school is about like JV at the 4A- save for the rare team here and there. Been watching it a long time around here and the difference is just astounding. Watched his legion team get pounded by Post 10,he pitched and was knocked out the 2nd inning. Did not get on base at all but I will say that Post 10 was loaded with talent. I think he has a ways to go play at the CAA level but his uncle could have a say in putting him in the lineup. Would be a nice story if it happens.

That’s fair Mullet, but I’d venture to guess we’ve had plenty of guys from lower high schools over the years have good success. Hope the writers are spot on with their optimism

D1 coaches typically recruit players who have performed well at a 4A school or on the top travel ball circuit or American Legion ball. Baldwin did receive some honors for his play in HS but his Legion team was not competitive and I couldn't find anything about him on the travel ball side. Could work out in the long run but it is telling that he has struggled even at 1st base and is obviously not going to hit the ball like a D1 1st baseman-with power. Its not a knock on him but just how it works in college baseball. 6-1 and 160 is tough at this level as a 1st baseman.
