If CUSA bonus play were to start tomorrow
If I understand correctly and this article is right

https://medium.com/the-red-towel/c-usa-h...986e4987a0

Quote:So, here’s how it’ll work: The #1 seeded team would host the #2 and #3 ranked teams, while going on the road to the #4 and #5 ranked team. The #2 ranked team would host the #3 and #4 while traveling to the #1 and #5, and so on.

#1 UAB would host #2 UTSA and #3 North Texas and go on the road vs #4 Old Dominion and #5 Marshall

The schedule shows 5 bonus play games though. Is one of those a bye?

I think that is wrong. It’s an 18 game schedule. We play everyone once and MTSU twice. That’s 14 games. That leaves 4 games for bonus play

With a 5 team group, only 4 teams can play on a given night. So one team must sit every session.

Short answer, yeah, one date is a bye.

With the ratings of those in the top 5 now there is no way still that playing the other 4 will raise anyone's RPI more than that the best team has now.

I guess we will have exciting games though followed up with the same exciting games in the semi finals of the conference tournament.

Again, it’s not the RPI anymore. Those rankings are not used by the selection committee.

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball...t-rankings

Here are the net rankings, and I’ve sorted it by conference to show where we are at. The key to me is our better ranked teams are in that first pod for the most part. Now, we need to put things together ooc, and this could work. Either way, I’d rather host top five teams in the conference than get sent down to Miami for an end of season disaster again.

It also make it exciting for the bottom teams. They are fighting for the last two spots, and instead of having scheduling quirks screw them, they get to settle it on the court.

Yup. Good chance that at least 3 of the 4 semifinalist come from Pod 1. This tweak seems to make winning the regular season title tougher. Whoever gets that NIT bid will have earned it.

I'm not against trying something new. I like CUSA being innovative.

Be interesting if CUSA could offer that Pod 1 round robin part of the season as separate package to broadcasters. Might have a chance of getting picked up nationally with better match ups. First part of the season on ESPN+ but then Pod 1 play on the ESPN cable channels.

The biggest gripe I have is I can see a scenario where this is a tie for fifth place and someone will get relagated to the second tier. They could end up with a record good enough to get a bye in the conference and be denied only because they are trapped in the second pod.

Or, if the first 6 are tight, the 6th place team might win the league with a 4-0 finish. 11-3 going 4-0 would pass 5 teams that started 12-2 or 11-3 but finished 2-2.

I think only the top pod can win the league though, regardless of the other teams records at that point, but I'm not sure.

You're correct. If you're in the second pod you can earn no better than the 6th seed in the conference tournament.

If someone has the best record in the conference, in my mind, they win the regular season, no matter what their seed in the tournament is. That’s what is screwed up with this junk. It creates a scenario where you could end up with best record and not be the #1 seed

RE: If CUSA bonus play were to start tomorrow
CUSA had a dumb situation like this before in the late 90s and early 2000’s when basketball was in divisions. They had it set up where the top two teams in each division got byes, no matter what their record was. Most years, the American Division with Louisville, Marquette and Cincinnati were much better than the National Division. One year, Southern Miss won the National Division, but 4 or 5 teams in the American had better records. It wasn’t right that teams with worst records get byes over teams with better records.

Eventually they scrapped that and gave byes to the four best records. It’s funny to see that CUSA is regressing as they try to think outside of the box

It literally does not hurt a thing to try this. We are screwed with the prior setup, so we are trying something different. Is it perfect? I doubt it. But we are at least trying something.

The conference as a whole needs to start playing and winning meaningful OOC games rather than gimmicks to try and game the system.

Consultants get paid to do something as well.

Doesn't mean that they get you anywhere.

Yeah most of us post our convoluted wild ideas about manipulating the systems on message boards. Because some guy was affiliated with ESPN, he found some suckers to pay him for his dumb ideas

The ESPN guy is Mark Adams. He is a G5 apologist who if you follow him on twitter is the best at pointing out the P5 hypocrites and constantly calls out the power teams with their lousy scheduling and after a lower budget team beats a big budget team he always post it to twitter showing the difference in the budgets in the teams playing. He is very entertaining to follow on twitter if you are a fan of none power basketball. Puts them, the power schools, on blast daily. I'm surprised that ESPN lets him get away with it and keep his job honestly. He has the smaller schools best interest in heart whether you want to believe that or not.
