New Autonomy 5 Passed Rules for 2019
At last week's NCAA convention, proposals related to allowing students to receive room and board over the summer and receive mental health benefits were passed by the A5.

This is a reminder that over the past five years the Autonomy structure has produced benefits for student-athletes. Previously, some of these proposals would get rejected by G5 and lower schools because of their costs.

Did the AAC approve these measures?
The AAC is a power conference according to the game commercials, so it’s important to know what Aresco thinks on this issue.

Good package suspect most of G5 will adopt them. Can’t see summer aid impacting many players. Most athletes need summer classes so they can take lighter loads in season

I agree. E.g., you might have a new recruit who comes to campus in June for summer workouts, but because the fall semester hasn't formally started by rule the school can't provide him with room and board, and if a booster does it, it's a violation. But how is that athlete supposed to eat and live?

IIRC, Aresco is on record saying the AAC will 'match' whatever the A5 adopt, so I assume that will be true here as well.

Access to mental health services is available to every enrolled student, however, unless they were a non-revenue student athlete who would just go over to the Student Health Center, most would have no clue about it since if you played football and basketball, you likely didn't participate in a Student Orientation with the rest of your Freshman class and was given an entirely different agenda.

The result is likely more detrimental to the student body who may lose a counselor which will change her/his focus on the Athletic Department.

Here is the entire list of Autonomous Five proposals adopted today. It includes action regarding engaging with agents by this time next year.

As I read it the only real requirement is for the athlete to be given information about what services are available. That’s pretty embarrassing that they felt they had to mandate something everyone should have been doing

Yes. That’s why me and you aren’t friends anymore.

It's called micromanaging.

All this means is one extra piece of paper in their orientation packet. And if it's not there, the school can get docked by the NCAA.

If you can't manage the big important things, micromanage to make it look like you're doing something.
