...more like Risk than Monopoly. ESPN controls one continent (ACC) and enough of the others to prevent anyone else from getting them.
Actually, ESPN controls 2 continents, using your Risk analogy: SEC and ACC.

Nah, they control MOST of the SEC, but CBS still has a very choice piece of that continent!

I stopped playing risk about 10 years ago. My three brother in laws and I would play that game every friday and saturday night until 2 or 3 oclock in the morning. Sometimes we would start on a Friday night until 3 am and then finish on saturday night. It got to be way too competitive and addicting. So now we spend our time playing spades, which is equally competitive and addicting, but it doesnt take so long.

It's called Bid Whist, and it's basically spades in which the highest bidder wins the right to determine the rules of the hand (e.g. high or low card wins; with or without trump cards). This makes it more exciting because you can destroy your opponent's hand by simply out-bidding him (and thus low-bidding is severely punished).

I love Rook.
We play a modified game. No 1,2,3,4. Rook plays as a 10.5. 120 points, 5 card widow.

Well I'm already on record in favor of reducing the scholarships/roster down to 65 players anyway (for more parity, and to save costs), so if that happens, I'm fine with it.
If you want parity, then abolish all athletic grants-in-aid. Draw your football talent from students who have matriculated solely on the basis of academic merit. All sports would be club sports, and participants would pay activity fees and derive benefit as they would from any other extra-curricular activity -- kind of like high school sports.
Let the NFL create its own development league(s) for guys who are more interested in playing football than earning a degree in a recognized academic discipline (just think, no more special studies students with undeclared majors taking faux classes).
And finally, tell the networks to take their influence and money and stuff them where the Sun don't shine.

No reason for college football to change the playoff process so other teams can compete.
Well, there are a boat load of the participation trophy generation out there. They need to learn if you want it then earn it. Nothing is free and there are no guarantees of success. And I consider those minor lessons compared to something more serious, like actual combat, where finishing second gets you a Purple Heart for participation.
The bowl system is the original participation trophy

No it wasn't. The intent of the bowls was strictly commercial. Bring in tourist dollars for the local economy. The whole concept was never seen as anything but a vacation opportunity. The Rose Bowl being the first had these motives and the hopes of matching two of the best teams in the nation. That was later changed to PAC vs Big 10.

Idealistic from its inception whose cause was not helped by the individual actions of many of its active members (those who were active university presidents or active heads of statewide systems) during their respective tenures, most notably on the ACC side - Shalala and Kirwan.
Cheers,
