RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Quote:AT&T said Friday that it has successfully completed the first 5G browsing session using a commercial-grade device. The test took place in Waco, Texas.

You can buy the device, a Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot, for use in 5G test regions later this year. AT&T has yet to reveal a specific release date or pricing for the device.

The company had completed the first 5G data transfer in September, but that was using test equipment, not a device everyday consumers will be able to buy.

AT&T's plan is to start rolling out 5G in 12 cities, including Dallas, Atlanta and Oklahoma City. Then, next year, another 19 cities will gain access, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

https://www.cnet.com/news/at-t-reveals-5...peed-test/

AT&T Nighthawk is debuting this December and is the closest thing on the market to a true 5G Jetpack.

Its a 5G hotspot that can be stacked with AT&T phone service for device savings and with AT&T's Watch TV service (37 channels and similar to Philo in price).

A shared 9GB plan between a phone and a hotspot is only 40 dollars a month with 20 dollars per device cost. I've heard its possible to share an "unlimited" plan that goes up to 100GB before throttling but couldn't confirm on the AT&T website.

Verizon you can combine a Jetpack w/ a cell prepaid plan for unlimited data. But the Jetpacks for sale aren't quite to the 5G standard yet.

Updated PSVUE as they now have a sports pack for $10/month that includes more sports channels. Eligible on the Core and above tiers.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
My family are going to either drop DirecTV Now completely and just use our Antenna and Netflix or shave down further to Philo TV without sports channels. May try out Philo for a bit but we aren't watching as many channels as before since some of the shows just are entertaining enough. If we do use Philo, I'll report how it is. I would like to try them out for a little bit and if we aren't watching as much then will drop completely. I'll get my sports fix from OTA and Stadium.
If the MW goes digital/Stadium then that will make the decision to be a full cord cutter.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Well, I've dropped DirecTV Now and went to Philo TV. So far so good, no issues and seem to be running better than DTV Now. I wanted to drop it completely, but the fam decided they needed a few cable channels. So Philo is a cable package without news or sports channels and therefore is pretty inexpensive. $16/month.

I'll be getting my sports from OTA, Stadium and MW Network.

Does OTA get you just the basic ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS?

Depending on your area. Most areas get at least those 4. Most networks have standard definition sub channels too.

In Wilmington we get ABC, CBS, CW, Fox, and PBS. We also have an independent network. Our NBC affiliate has sub channels for SD digital networks Bounce (African American Network), Escape (Crime Drama) and Laugh (Comedy). Our Fox Affiliate has the same for This TV (Old Movies), Gritt (Westerns) and Ion. Our Indy station has sub channels for Me TV (Classic TV) and Stadium (Sports).

Overall I get 18 channels for free with an antenna. Bigger markets get into the 40s and 50s

More than that. As Solohawks stated above, there are sub-channels that give area's a lot more channels. Here in Amarillo, I get 37 channels, 30 channels excluding the religious and shopping channels.
Some sub-channels are are HD, depends on the station and how the split the bandwidth.
Here the CW is on the sub-channel of the main station but it is in HD.
I get Get TV, Laff, Grit, Quest, MeTv, Buzzer, Ion, H&I, Comet, Stadium...etc.

YouTube TV is perfect for sports fans who can live without NFL Network, NHL Network, BEIN, and PAC 12 Network

Hulu Live TV is also available at this price point. It includes ESPN Goal Line/Bases Loaded but does not include Tennis Channel, MLB Network, or NBA Network.

Having CBS Sports I think is key if you are fan of G5 sports since MAC, CUSA and MWC show up on there quite a lot.

What I like also about these OTT distributors is if you want to add on movie channels you can without having separate log-ins that you would need if you wanted to order them directly.

With Hulu switch from a subscription from Showtime to Starz and then back again in 30 seconds. Cable providers put the premiums in a bundle so you'll have to cancel the whole bundle if you want to switch.

Hulu also has it where you can have a no commercials subscription for 12 dollars and then for 30 dollars add HBO, Cinemax and Showtime for movies with no network television.

Philo for $16 dollars might be able to offer something similar plus give you a small amount of cable channels.

Just got an email from Hulu saying my Hulu Live TV will be increasing in price from $40/month to $45/month at the end of February. Don't know if DirectTV or YouTube will be following suit.

DirecTVNow and YouTube TV have already gone from $35 to $40 in their base package with DirecTVNow increasing their higher tier packages by $5 as well. Sling had already raised their base price from $20 to $25 as well. Hulu was the last holdout

They are lowering their on demand only base plan with ads to $6. Thier no ad on demand only plan is remaining $12

My bill with Hulu/1 premium channel is $53.

To get it the same lineup through my cable provider I am looking at $180 dollars as a double play. I think most will eat the 5 dollar increase who subscribe to live TV.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
I found good resource for those looking to unbundle their phone bill.

https://www.whistleout.com/CellPhones/Carriers

For a steady data user on a cell phone (not a big streamer) probably 5GB of data is more than adequate.

-Sprint has an unlimited plan that is free for 1 year with unlimited data. BYOD deal. If the plan is normally $60 a month it can save you $720 a year however I don't think they buyout equipment installment plans with a credit.

-T-Mobile has a prepaid plan for 3 dollars a month for text/talk only. Talk and text time really has no value anymore on the market.

-Mint will give you 5GB for an intro price of $20 for 3 months and then at a regular price of $30 dollars.

-FreeUp has a $30 dollar plan with 5GB that includes international calling. This sounds better than the Mint offer with the international included.

-US Mobile will give you 5GB for $27 a month as a MVNO on T-Mobile/Verizon.

-Freedom pop is offering 2GB of data for $9.99 with an upfront charge of $119 dollars. It will probably work for a casual internet user but if you do anything like stock trade on your mobile phone you'll run into issues.

You may want to go direct to the manufacture and sign an EIP with them instead of a carrier. Samsung is offering a T-Mobile enabled phone with a $500 dollar trade in for the S8 to get into an S9 or Note 9.

Stadium is free with ads on Xumo.tv. They do show MWC games on there. Xumo also have ACC Digital Network as well. Xumo.tv parent company that owns MySpace. So, MySpace have their own to compete with Youtube and Facebook.

Updated.

Stadium in now on the Sling Blue and Orange packages. Stadium Plus is now part of the Extra Sports package on Sling. Before Stadium was only on the extra sports package. Seems like they make some moves in the OTT platform. Hopefully they would be able to get on the lower tiers on other platforms.
