That's 16/18. Duke has done more in football lately than Virginia.

Yeah, that's what I get for posting before coffee...
07-coffee3

So here's a possible football setup for this conference, with Virginia football dropped instead of Duke football:

Four 4-team pods rotate between two 8-team divisions (Atlantic/Coastal) in a 3-year cycle. Each team has a protected crossover and an alternate crossover for years in which the team shares a division with its protected crossover.

School: Protected crossover (play every year), Alternate crossover (play 2 years out of 3)

Pod 1
Boston College: Syracuse, Clemson
Louisville: South Carolina, North Carolina
Miami-FL: Florida State, Virginia Tech
Notre Dame: Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech

Pod 2
Syracuse: Boston College, NC State
Maryland: North Carolina, South Carolina
Penn State: Virginia Tech, Florida State
Pittsburgh: Notre Dame, Duke

Pod 3
Clemson: NC State, Boston College
South Carolina: Louisville, Maryland
Florida State: Miami-FL, Penn State
Georgia Tech: Duke, Notre Dame

Pod 4
NC State: Clemson, Syracuse
North Carolina: Maryland, Louisville
Virginia Tech: Penn State, Miami-FL
Duke: Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh

(If you really want to keep Virginia FB over Duke, put North Carolina in all the spots Duke currently is, and then put Virginia in the spots vacated by North Carolina.)

And here's a basketball setup. Each team has 3 protected opponents (listed below) that are played twice every year, while all other teams are played once for a total of 20 games.

Code:
BOSTON COLLEGE  Syracuse        Notre Dame      Miami-FL
CLEMSON         South Carolina  Georgia Tech    Florida State
DUKE            North Carolina  Wake Forest     NC State
FLORIDA STATE   Miami-FL        South Carolina  Clemson
GEORGIA TECH    Notre Dame      Clemson         South Carolina
LOUISVILLE      Maryland        Virginia        Virginia Tech
MARYLAND        Louisville      Penn State      Virginia
MIAMI-FL        Florida State   Virginia Tech   Boston College
NC STATE        Wake Forest     North Carolina  Duke
NORTH CAROLINA  Duke            NC State        Wake Forest
NOTRE DAME      Georgia Tech    Boston College  Pittsburgh
PENN STATE      Pittsburgh      Maryland        Syracuse
PITTSBURGH      Penn State      Syracuse        Notre Dame
SOUTH CAROLINA  Clemson         Florida State   Georgia Tech
SYRACUSE        Boston College  Pittsburgh      Penn State
VIRGINIA        Virginia Tech   Louisville      Maryland
VIRGINIA TECH   Virginia        Miami-FL        Louisville
WAKE FOREST     NC State        Duke            North Carolina

Allow conference members to schedule basketball games anyway they want. If a team wants to schedule an out of conference team the week before the league tournament, let them!!! These forced rivalry in-league basketball games are just dumb, IMO.

RE: If You Could Change Anything About Your Team’s Current Conference...
Other than teleporting Gonzaga to the East Coast? Not a whole lot.

I would like DePaul to become more competitive (which they look to be on the verge of being), as well as having stronger leadership and support for their men's basketball program. Ideally, Wintrust Arena would have been located closer to DePaul's campus, but if they return to being a winning program (something not seen in a LONG time), fans will undoubtedly come to see (especially with the Bulls being pathetic here in Chicago). In addition, Georgetown returning to a top-15 program would really help elevate the league as well (especially with Villanova's success and St. John's return to a top-25-level program).

I love the fact that St. John's is moving all of its conference games to MSG next year. That would mean that all of the Big East venues have strong attendance opportunities for conference-play (near 10k or higher).

Extension to the Gavitt Games would be wonderful, and the Big 12 Challenge is a huge plus as well. In retrospect, the Big East not getting a challenge completed with the PAC was a blessing in disguise. I'd also like to see Val extended, as she has been one of the best commissioners over the past several years. Getting MSG extended for the BET really strengthened the league's position for the next television agreement.

I would also love if Saint Louis elevated their play under Ford consistently enough to get to be #11 in the conference, going to twenty conference games, and adding an extra game for the BET. Dayton would be an excellent addition as well (just because of their strong fan support and commitment to men's basketball); however, I get the Xavier-issue. The round-robin is (and has been) one of the strengths of the league; not sure how long it can/will last, but I really enjoy it.

CAA as a College of Charleston fan: A halfway decent TV deal. Last year we had less than 10 national TV games as a league. Something better than CBSSN. Go to a ESPN network. The CAA plays in major cities, has rather well-heeled alums, yet leagues like the Big South and OVC with much lesser pockets have way better deals.

Not much wrong with the basketball structure of 9 home and homes. Play the baseball tournament in the southern cities where people actually care about the sport.

Leave the CAA for an FBS ASAP. CAA not strong enough athletic schools with the departures of ODU, GMU, VCU, Richmond in the past decade. Students and alumni alike don't like playing Elon, Hofstra, Drexel, or the others... Give us a rivalry of some sort.

Well, now that the Conference RPI sites are saying that the MAC is a better BBall conference than the A10 (and the WCC), add Dayton and St. Louis to the MAC, Olympic Sports only.

How about following the 10 team model of the Big 12 and the Sun Belt and having all conferences back to 10 teams? That way, 9 games against ALL conference members crowning a true conference champion; not a 14 or 16 team conference where teams don't play each other for years and a conference champion is a farce. Play everyone in your conference to win it.

Go back to the PAC 10 & BIG 10 models. Have conference names that actually reflect their size instead of a BIG 10 conference with 14 teams and a Big 12 conference with 10 teams. Why does the PAC 12 now extend beyond the Pacific to Colorado and Utah? Why does the Big 12 extend to West Virginia? Why does the BIG 10 extend to Maryland and New Jersey? Why does the ACC extend from Miami to Boston? Why does CUSA extend from El Paso to Miami to Huntington, WV? Most of these conferences make no geographic sense and were made for market size and TV that don't always work, especially for fans, and would seem to work better with a more geographical footprint. The old 10 team conference models were and still are the best, IMO, with revenue shared among fewer conference members. The only difference would be no more mythical champions. Have a true playoff with all FBS schools and conferences involved. If a school is an FBS member, it should have the right to compete for an FBS championship. I know its a pipe dream as ESPN pretty much dictates all of this and now has the mega P5 conferences to the near exclusion of G5s, but its just my opinion.

One of the side advantages of larger conferences is they are better for Olympic sports.

I haven't run the numbers recently but the average D1 conference last time I calculated has 11 members in it. Just slightly above that now with Dixie St.

Going back to 10 would require 35, maybe 36 division 1 conferences.
