RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Zone defense... why are we not playing more of it?
How is Gadsden feeling after two quick games back from his injury?
Why did Cacok get the flagrant 1 vs Towson? There was no replay.
Is it possible for you to have players as special guest on the show?

PLAYERS AS SPECIAL GUESTS IS A GOOD IDEA. However, I doubt the team will allow you to ask the tough questions and have the players weigh in with their opinions.

Also, why don't we press more when it's working?

Exactly. Press to shave time off that shot clock. Play press to zone after makes to force teams out of their normal offensive rhythm. It also helps disguise deficiencies and allows athletic teams to establish a defensive mindset.

So, a lot happened last week. If you have questions, we might be able to come up with some answers. Fire away.

Please ask the HC which is 'scarier'. Playing some Zone when teams start stroking the 3 or UNCW's present M-M defense versus the 3pt shot. (Ranked #321 out 353 teams in D1) The Adjusted Field Goal % (aFG%) is 55.8%
Another idea in Post Game interviews is to ask what in game adjustments were made when teams do get hot other than 'get a hand up'.

Following up: In his comments all season long (perhaps with the exception of after the Drexel game) at no point have I heard Coach McGrath indicate that perhaps the coaching staff had made wrong defensive strategy decisions...just that the coaching staff 'should have done a better job' of preparing the players to execute their strategy. Given that UNCW's own announcers got to the point of saying that other teams had concluded that UNCW's defensive scheme called for getting set up for -and launching - 3 point shots against us and therefore adjustments in our defense needed to be made (not just for players to bring "more energy" or 'execute the current game plan better'), please opine on whether Coach McGrath's second half "scary" change to zone in order to do "something different" represents a lasting recognition that change was in order. Not discounting the need for players to bring energy, step up, and for the team to be able to execute man to man, etc, has the Coach come to the same realization as the teams scouting us - namely that aspects of what he has been trying to execute are exploitable and need to be permanently adjusted? Or was it (as has been the case heretofore) something he did for just as long as he had to in order to buy time to go back to his preferred defensive scheme?

I'll wrap this up in a nice little bow. We pressed for about 25% of the game against Delaware. Does Coach McGrath intend to press at least that amount going forward? And is he now more confident playing zone to improve our defense?

Thanks for your efforts as always. Usually it has been your practice to quote questions from this board verbatim, or at least summarize them in a way that accurately reflects their essence. Today the questions seem to be deemed too pointed/critical to be dealt with in the same way. Interesting.

The problem is they're more questions for coach, which I can't really address before we record this podcast. I'd love to have him on Monday morning and ask, but unfortunately that's never going to happen. Happy to address questions about observations or my opinions, but all three seemed pointed to Coach McGrath which I can't answer.

The man does have a point! We are lucky to have their podcast. Must be the only thing really like it in the CAA.
Heck, Alex Riley all by himself exceeds the media output of the CAA office. I was was thinking that maybe "Joey D" could try to work a deal for Alex on the CBS Sports Network like he did for the CAA Championship , but then it occurred to me that his podcast audience already is probably bigger than the # of people who watch that network...so it would be a step back!

Enjoyed the podcast guys. We need to add a quick "Wrestling" take right before the beverage and food segment as well. This is the South so it's important to hit the important stuff!

Alex and Michael are great we are lucky to have them. I know CofC has a basketball only podcast hosted my Tommy Glasgow (@king_kresse for those who have twitter) called Holy City Hoops (@holycityhoops) he's a contributor to SB Nation's Mid-Major Madness. I've never given it a listen or plan to, but he is a good follow on twitter. Don't get it twisted I'm a BnB guy all day, just wanted to put it out there that there is something similar.

Fun episode. Great job guys
Question for next week...can you compare the previous commish with the current commish
I know the new administration was in a rough spot with departing members and arguably the most diverse league in the NCAA in terms of geography, public/private, and sports prioritized, but he seems to be aloof.

Solo - Got the question. We'll certainly add that to the list for next week.
Bill - Michael would be happy to add a wrestling segment, especially since every time I turn around he's at a show.
70s - We'd take the CBS exposure! More audiences the better.
Did want to let everyone know that we're taping a special edition show next Tuesday with former UNCW baseball pitcher Seth Frankoff before he goes back over to Korea with the Doosan Bears. If you've got questions for him, feel free to submit them below or email them Alex.Riley@StarNewsOnline.com. Thanks!
