Curious about college athletics during the shutdown
This is first and foremost a sports board site so I'll bring up this question in a separate thread. Last year during the brief government shutdown, I know Air Force had to cancel a few athletic events. But this year, I'm not seeing any signs that Air Force, Army, Navy, etc., are cancelling any events. And by all indications this shutdown isn't going anyway any time soon.

It seems a bit irresponsible for these teams to be playing while active duty military members aren't getting paid (I saw a story yesterday that said Coast Guard members are being told they should look at alternative ways of generating income like having a garage sale).

ETA - actually now I see the Coast Guard took down its tip sheet which recommended garage sales, baby sitting gigs and becoming a mystery shopper as ways to generate extra income. But it was online briefly yesterday and I know my friend who is an NCIS officer was stunned to read about it.

It is a partial shutdown. The military is fully funded through 9/30. Air Force, Army, and Navy are not affected and the service members (along with civilians and contractors) are indeed getting paid. Not sure if Coast Guard has any intercollegiate athletic teams (D3?), but I would imagine they are unable to travel.

Coast Guard Academy does play D3. They seem to still be playing their athletics.

Both Coast Guard Academy and Kings Point (Merchant Marine Academy) still appear to be playing based on their web sites.

I'm not sure about them, but I know Army and Navy (and I believe Air Force) athletics are largely funded by alumni-supported athletic associations. If they have similar arrangements, there would probably be at least enough money in the respective funds to keep them going for a while, particularly since reimbursement would be expected.

Heard about this one this morning... and I'm surprised they didn't include Bake Sales and Girl Scout Cookies.

Whoever put that 'tip sheet' up there was definitely off their rocker

Only a small percentage of USMA, USNA, and USAFA athletics money is from the government, so the shutdown has minimal, if any effect.
