RE: Legion Field: Time not on the side of Bham's former 'Football Capital of the South'
Speaking solely for myself, as a UAB alumnus, Blazer season ticket holder, and lifelong resident of the Birmingham metro, I'm excited about the new stadium, and when it's open, I will not spare Legion Field a second glance.

RE: Legion Field: Time not on the side of Bham's former 'Football Capital of the South'
Legion Field has been an antiquated facility for almost 50 years. B'ham tried in 1998 to replace it with an enclosed all-weather MPF but was outvoted by its metro area kinfolks. So here we are two decades later still talking about how old and outdated Legion Field is as it remains the only large capacity football facility in this area for at least three more years. Its expected replacement will be about 60% of its capacity and will be of largely seasonal use. It will likely suit UAB's football needs for many years, but perhaps not those of the city (except for the "too small dreamers" Dr Joe Volker warned about).

The truth does not change because you or others get tired of it. Until it is demonstrated that the new BJCC stadium offers more modern amenities to our fans and the citizens than just new iron, steel, concrete and turf, B'ham will not know if it made the right choices for its future needs. Meanwhile, we see that Glendale, Arizona and Santa Clara, Cal. have been added to the growing list of U.S. cities with whom B'ham can't compete for major sports or other events.

If UAB can win its next game at Legion Field we will have the longest NCAA D1 winning streak at Legion Field in its long history. I think.

I dont even know why Im taking the bait here, but you do know that Glendale and Santa Clara are part of MSAs that are over 4.5 times the size of our metro. Birmingham isn't trying to compete with Phoenix and the Bay area for sporting events. Perhaps this new stadium won't be perfect but it will certainly be a MAJOR upgrade over Legion Field.

As I said, the list of metro areas that B'ham need not try to compete with for events is just getting longer every year -- and many of them are not "4-5 times the size of our metro". They build larger while we build smaller.
If projections about the 2020 census are correct, Alabama is the ONLY southern sunbelt state that will lose another member in Congress bringing it down to 6 in the US House. All others in our region will remain even or gain (Texas is projected to gain 3) .

As long as Alabama's political system is as backwards as it is, there will a significant amount of people that go to school there and then get the hell out of dodge. Most people think I'm telling a really silly joke when I tell them about Robert Bentley's exploits.

You really shouldn't post information that is blatantly false, especially when it is so easily refuted. Alabama's population numbers are not declining. It took me about 90 seconds to find that based on the latest estimates our population growth is at an annual rate of .26%, and expected to be at 5 million by the 2020 census. So, either you A) are completely ignorant of the topic and too lazy to research it before you post, or B) know your statement is false but post it anyway to make some sort of point. I don't know which is worse.

This is something that drives me crazy. Recruiting at Alabama (yuck, I know), all I ever talk to are kids that came from out of state and want to go somewhere else out of state. We rarely talk to kids that want to live in Birmingham.

I'm guessing that they misread that the comment they were replying to said Alabama would lose a house seat, not necessarily a declining population. Alabama's population in increasing, sure, but the majority of the southeast has grown much quicker.
Pct increase from 4/1/10 - 7/1/18:
TX: 14.14%
GA: 8.57%
NC: 8.89
TN: 6.68%
SC: 9.92%
AL: 2.25%
LA: 2.79%
MS: 0.62%

RE: Legion Field: Time not on the side of Bham's former 'Football Capital of the South'
The 435 seats in the US House are apportioned every ten years according to RELATIVE population growth among the states. Alabama has increased its population since 1950 when it had 9 House seats. It has grown while dropping to 8, increased again while dropping to 7 and now may drop to 6 after 2020 because of lower growth rate. In that respect, it is similar to the "cut score" in a golf tournament in that it is relative to the scores in the first two days of that tournament. Usually, only a couple of states (WVA comes to mind) actually LOSE population.
How many decades of voting in reactionary conservatives (regardless of party label) will it take for Alabama to approach the 3 Electoral votes (the Constitutional minimum) of D.C. and a few western states?

Sorry. Alabama's slow/stagnant population growth. One thing that is irrefutable is that Alabama is growing at a much slower rate than the rest of the southeast. Not sure what point you're trying to make or if you're just intentionally being a jack ass.

The POINT is that for many decades the red flags warning of going the wrong way in state leadership have been totally ignored by important leaders and policy makers with the support of voters. The business journals reported Alabama lost over 60,000 jobs as a result of the Recession of 2008, but much is made of the few thousand jobs -many perhaps minimal wage, no benefit jobs - that have come in attracted by the legislative act in 2016 effectively guaranteeing the cheapest labor force in America.
Where is the public outcry that Alabama has a rural auto death rate twice the national average, or that the state identifies dozens of "failing schools", but has no programs to improve them? Like those "monitors" on TV ads, they just label and walk away, in effect washing their hands. No other state had the top officers of all 3 government branches removed from office only to have voters return the same party's leaders to supermajority power.
