We'rd prefer Candle or Leipold.
I have no idea how anyone could convince themselves either of them are upgrades from Carey. Leipold, maybe, but I bet buffalo takes a massive step back next year.

Well, if nothing else, I'm guessing UT and UB fans would be a lot less receptive to losing their HC, especially to a G5 program.

If you’re judging anything off NIU’s fan base, you’re already doing it wrong. I concur with the post above that you won’t find 10 worse fan bases in the country worse than this one.

There is no doubt our fan base has become bottom level stuff. Ironically some of it probably originated from the Orange Bowl appearance.

For those thinking Leipold is a great option, just a reminder that he went 6-16 prior to last season as he dealt with the development of Jackson as a rs freshamn then soph. Sound familiar?

And he ended last season losing three of last four including getting pummeled by Ohio, gagging in the MACC, and losing a bowl game.

Leopold's a winner. D3 national champs, gets bottom rung choices recruiting and took over a struggling program. He can spot winners and sign them.

Yes sir.... Leipold is a quality coach. He will get scooped up eventually.

I bet you Buffalo finishes below .500 next year.

Only this place could prefer a coach who is 23-27 and just lost the MACC to NIU to Carey lol

Are you sure? In Leipold’s 4 seasons he is 23/27. The previous 4 years before his arrival buffalo was 20/28. 13/11 the two years right before he took over. So he actually took over a team who had a winning record over the last 2 seasons. Recruiting has gone done since his arrival. Buffalo has had recruit classes ranked 12,9,9,11 in his 4 years. The prior 4 years they were ranked 4,12,11,7.

Let’s see how he does without the top qb in the Mac before we are sure he is all that.

I’m just an idiot on a message board, but my guess is Rod was a candidate up until his interview earlier today.

Careful what we wish for here. I'm a huge Carey critic but I also don't like the feeling of uncertainty in this program. Thankfully this is happening after the early signing period. Actually, can recruits open up their recruitment in this type of situation (coaching change).????

Every time a recruit says I love the "family feel" of NIU, you know Rod is doing something right. I read about recruits saying that a lot. Stepping into the unknown is never easy for a low budget program like NIU.

They're going to roll snake eyes on a hire eventually. It's bound to happen. If Rod does indeed go, let's hope it's not now.

My personal list for his replacement if it comes to that:

1. Kevin Kane--think he's the obvious choice
2. Chip Long--not sure how realistic he would be
3. Matt Canada
4. Mike Lynch--Cuse OC

Other names:
Jim Leonhard
Tracey Claeys
Tuke
Matt Simon?

Given the strength of our out of conference schedule next year, at how many losses will it take for fans to call for the new coaches head? By the time we reach conference play most "fans" would have given up on the team/coach already. It's gonna be a tough sell in bringing in a new coach as it sets him up for a poor start (unless he's some miracle coach). At least he will be taking over a MAC champion team and can focus on building up instead of rebuilding.

Our fans are idiots. They'll probably call for a new coach to be fired after his first loss.

Or while he wins a MAC Championship.

RS - your own recruiting #s 12,9,9,11 and yet he's a play away from MAC Champs. That is a coach picking guys no one else wanted and doing a great job. NIU 4 yrs ago was a much better job than UB and still is today. Give the man his due just like Carey. People hate on Carey and he has won the MAC and we COMPETE with the P5 teams on the road.

Guy misspelled our newspaper, and the guy at the newspaper has no sources and regurgitates stuff from our message boards. No one has any idea who is under consideration now.

Interesting/worthless side note, Kevin Kane's wikipedia photo is the strangest thing I've seen today.

Surely (don't call me Shirley) there has to be a photo of him coaching somewhere?

Canada did well at the helm of Maryland for his short fill in. If he has hc aspirations maybe he would come back? He probably makes more $ as a coordinator in the Big though.

If you are Carey this might be an optimal time to leave, the trajectory looks sharply down right now, and if you bail right now you will avoid blame for what you caused. It would make sense for him in that way. Where it might not make sense is the job security part of it. At NIU, he is given full unchecked power and can do whatever he wants. At Temple, he might be evaluated by an athletic department. Im not sure what the numbers would be , but if its fat enough I think it would be smart for him to go.

Solid list of names. I can see the Kevin Kane thing happening. He would be a loaner type of coach - probably two or three seasons, but it makes a lot of sense. This would be back to the Doeren mold of hiring a young, on the rise coach knowing he probably isn't going to be here long.

Chip Long probably isn't happening - I agree with you. From Touchdown Jesus to 600 people at Huskie Stadium might be a little tough to swallow

Matt Canada - I think that ship has sailed. I don't see him coming back to DeKalb again.

Mike Lynch would be interesting.

Of your other names, I like Tracy Claeys the best. He is a guy that I think could take this job by the horns and might actually stay.
