ND wants NCAA to allow them a 13th game

Think this is the most insane request ND has ever made. They need to choose either join a conference or know as an independent they need to go 12-0 and that may no longer be enough. Can't imagine any conference would vote for this.

I don't have a problem with it.

I don't understand the demand that they join a conference.

Maybe the top two ranked independent teams could play the 13th game when other conference championship games are held. This year it will feature Notre Dame vs Army.

Then every school would be allowed a 13th. You would have a set of flexible games on championship Saturday and maybe start matching some of your 3rd and 4th place teams up. I'm guessing that would turn out worse for ND because their options would be limited to the independents.

Perhaps every school gets a 13th. With divisions: division winners play for conference championship, division runners up play, 3rd teams play, etc. Or go divisionless - 1 plays 2 for championship, 3 plays 4, etc. Make bowl requirement 7-6 (over .500) or if you play in conference championship.

And they'll call it the "special snowflake rule".

Of course, they could always just move the university to Hawaii.

I dont think they will get it, but a very sensible rule would be to allow every school a 13th game or a conference championship game. ECU-State and Marshall-Va Tech were fun games thrown together at the last minute. Would it be awful if that were to happen every year?

Schools will definitely not want to have to throw together games at the last minute. I suppose all teams would just schedule the 13th game and cancel it if they made the CCG. Not ideal though.

Or, the committee could just consider only each team's W-L record vs. FBS teams, similar to the basketball committee only considering a team's games vs. D-I teams.

That way, almost every CCG participant would have 12 games including the CCG considered, which would be the same number of games as Notre Dame and every other team that doesn't play FCS opponents.

But Jack, what about the overall good for college athletics as a whole? What happened to that self-righteous view when SU and Pitt accepted invites for the ACC only to have ND accept a similar offer a little over a year later?

Think of the student athlete!

Cheers,
Neil

It's a non issue and the NCAA doesn't have to approve. N.D. just has to play Hawaii.

of course they can, but that's not what Notre Dame is wanting.

Duh! "You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might get" an expensive trip that doesn't add to your S.O.S.

What this is about Stever is the compromise that Delany is really after. He doesn't want to expand the playoffs. He wants a stronger emphasis given to conference champs. He's going to ask for inclusion of conference champs with 2 or fewer losses and agree to inclusion for conference champs with 1 or fewer losses. When that happens N.D. is back to really needing that 13th data point to try to squeeze in.

Most years 4 of the 5 conference champs will have fewer than two losses. That leaves precious little wiggle room for the Irish. They would have to have a 1 loss season at the same time the P5 conference champs had at least two two loss conference champs. That's a mighty small window of opportunity.

FBS will get to 13 across the board. CCG will be gravy among the most deserving.

What I don’t get is how some CCG autonomy measures were able to get through, like the Big 12’s petition, but not the ACC’s. A logical next step in setting up access to a thirteenth game away from the current conference constraints, which, allowable with round robin and below twelve members, but not back to a large single line or other configuration for those at or above twelve?

The access point is being tested. ND is right to test it. Had to wonder if what the ACC proposed for CCG determination was a way to bridge ND to it, too. ND’s not alone in wanting a thirteenth game; in company with at least the B1G and PAC with that one.

They don’t even need to play Hawai’i to qualify. Look at section (k) below, all ND, or anyone else interested, is to schedule a game in Hawai’i, Puerto Rico or Alaska against whoever they want to play in an interesting, made for TV matchup, and and then cut a deal with a local school like BYU-Hawai’i, Puerto-Rico Mayaguez or Alaska-Anchorage to pay them enough $$$ to have that local institution sanction the matchup as being “under the sponsorship” of the local school, who doesn’t even have to have a football team. While finding a venue in Alaska seems unlikely, you could probably find plenty of teams interested in week zero games at UH’s stadium and/or at a suitable venue in Puerto Rico (not sure about the stadium the Expos used temporarily, or the infrastructure after the hurricane, but an influx of tailgating tourists couldn’t hurt.) You could have Thursday, Saturday And Monday games in both sites in week zero and week 1 and get 12 teams with a 13th game, and if Hawai’i wanted they could theoretically sponsor matchups involving P5 vs P5 schools every weekend they were on the road, and condition their “sponsorship” of those games at their stadium but not involving them with a future home and home guarantee from each participant, so during the regular season they’d generate more cash and build up their own future OOC SoS.

17.9.5.2 Annual Exemptions. [FBS/FCS]
The maximum number of football contests shall exclude the following:

(k) Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico. [FBS/FCS]
Any football games played in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, respectively, either against or under the sponsorship of an active member institution located in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, by a Division I member institution located outside the area in question

I don't have a problem with independent teams being allowed a 13th game (allowed to play on Week 0 in August or Championship weekend). Rules in NCAA have never really favored independent schools so I think this would be a helpful rule.
