I've noticed there seems to be less punt returns in general in college. My guess is that the majority of college punters just cant kick far enough while still keeping a decent hang time. The result is shorter kicks that end up in a fair catch.

On kick offs it's just that new rule. Conservative Carey is just opting for the extra 5 yards for downing the ball out to the 25 instead of the 20. Burned Koko's redshirt year for 20 fair catches. Kinda dumb. Tucker could have done that.

RE: Grad Transfers
Maybe you have an argument about the burning if a redshirt but what's wrong with taking the ball at the 25 every time?

RE: Grad Transfers
Did a little digging and found an interesting Oct AP article on kickoff returns based on mid-season stats. According to the article, "rewarding teams for making fair catches on kickoffs has not caught on like officiating supervisors expected and more changes could be made in 2019 to further reduce kick returns or make them safer." The article states that fair catches were made on only 11.2 percent of kickoffs in the FBS through 10/13, so NIU was probably well beyond that percentage for the season. The article also said that "According to a study done in 2012, the most recent data available, the average starting position after a kickoff return was between the 22- and 23-yard line if the returner starts in the end zone." So, bottom line with regard to the NIU coaching staff, they're basically just playing the odds and getting slightly better than average field position vs having their return man run it out of the end zone. And typically, if a kick-off is short of the end zone but has a lot of hang time, getting a big return is also unlikely. You can read the article at http://www.apnews.com/cea1fde1dcd9439fa7e0625b75eca894.

RE: Grad Transfers
I think the odds could be used if NIU played the same team every week. But they don't.

Nothing at all. It may speak to a lack of an explosive return guy, but for an offense that struggled so much I’d think the chance to get a good return might have been worth it. Asking Childers to drive 75 yards 3 or 4 times a game is asking a lot.

Riley Neal is headed to Vandy

Thats a no brainer move. even if Vandy doesn't have a great year, a Vandy degree is worth quite a bit more

Especially considering both Neal and Gilbert had probably lost their starting spots at Ball State...

Jackson may regret this. Remember Ball State's Nate Davis of 10 years ago. He left early, got drafted yet never played an NFL.

Hopefully he can catch the ball and play another position. Don't see him as a pro QB at all.

It does seem like quite a stretch.

He already graduated, what's to regret?

Jackson did state that he's pursuing a "lifelong" dream of pro football. But kudos to him for earning his degree.

I figured this topic would make our board. NIU must have missed out due to HC vacancy. Lol
