2018-19 Non-Conference

The Cougars sit at 10-2 against D-I opponents, ranking # 67 in the NCAA NET and # 65 in the RPI. They have quality wins over Rhode Island (# 80) and VCU (# 29) on the road, and Memphis (# 133) on a neutral court. They are battle-tested and well-rested, having last played on Dec 21 (a 73-71 home win over Coastal Carolina).

The Cougars will open their CAA slate with three consecutive road games, facing Towson and JMU after they visit Trask.

Strengths

* Turnover ratio: The Cougars are averaging just 10.9 turnovers per contest, while forcing 13.6 opposing TO's. They also average 7.1 steals per game as a team. PG Grant Riller's 1.9 A/TO ratio is a major driver of the team's success.

* Post play/Depth: Jarrell Brantley does a lot of everything for the Cougars. He scores, both in the post and the perimeter, is arguably the CAA's best defender, and is very efficient. Don't expect him to get into foul trouble either, as he averages just 2.6 fouls per contest. Starting Center Nick Harris and bench forwards Jaylen McManus and Isaih Moore have been effective as well.

* Overall Defense: The Cougars are allowing opponents to score just 67.3 points per contest, which ranks 79th in the nation. And they do so without committing many fouls, averaging just 14.9 per contest. The NCAA only ranks total fouls, not fouls per game, but if they did, the Cougars would rank in the Top 50 in this category. Head Coach Earl Grant's disciplined approach to defense is shining through, as it has throughout his tenure at Charleston.

Weaknesses

* Guard Depth: After Riller, things get a bit ugly when it comes to players who can contribute out of the backcourt. Marquise Pointer only recently came back from an injury, and is still shaking off the rust. This will be his 5th game of the season. Brevin Galloway, Zep Jasper and Jaylen Richard are talented, but raw.

* Perimeter Shooting: The Cougars are shooting just .310 as a team, and don't rely all that much on the three ball as a unit. They're attempting just 21.1 per game as a team, which puts them in the middle of the pack in the NCAA this season. Only Brantley and Galloway are consistent threats in this area, though of course, this has been a major weakness for the Seahawk defense this season.

Obviously one of the toughest matchups right of the gate, but if we can keep the turnovers down, then there is a strong possibility to win this game.

Hawks would have a really good shot to win with Ty available, but it's hard when you lose a guy that was killing it and was so efficient at scoring and defense like Ty. What? Shooting like 60% from 3 and playing great defense doesn't hurt? Yes, it does, so the Hawks need to keep others getting time. And, Ty's high percentage is due to court awareness and prudent shot selection and not necessarily by getting his shot like an Ingram so he's making himself available to be open (like his court awareness!). And, that's not a knock at all that he can't get his because he's doing his thing inside the offense which I like and not forcing things BUT again, he's not available for a while. Heck, his defense is already missed.

Others need to play in a similar manner and not force it and move to an open spot for a good situation. His absence will help others get more PT and the team will be better in the end. It's good to see some of the younger guys evolve over this span even in defeat.

I just glanced at the A/TO ratio for the players and it looks like Devonte needs to kick the ball back out more especially when doubled. That will free him up better because his ratio isn't good at all. Toews is good, Ty is good but hurt now, Estime is good and Sims is good. The rest need to value what they do. This is the problem right now for this team because they have enough talent to win, really win when/if Ty G gets back, but the people out there need to move the ball productively and get SHOTS and not have TO's. It's pretty simple when you simply look at this glaring stat.

Cacok is not a traditonal post up player, that's the issue. He is better hitting the offensive board off misses and getting to the basket on the move. He is a perfect pick and roll player from the high post. Or, a back door cut player recieving the ball above the basket. We used to use him in the manner all the time and he was unstoppable. McGrath is a traditional inside out coach, and that does not suit Cacok's game at all. It's also the reason he's fouling so much now. Remember when Cacok would have about 2-3 show stopping alley oops every game? What happened?

I know this will come as a huge surprise to everyone but we are losing because another team that doesn’t usually hit threes is, and scoring points off our turnovers. Who’d a thunk it?!?

Our D really isnt that bad. Held them to 37 points. Our offense has had some bad turnovers, missed some easy shots, and is flat

Good job to not let this get away but holy hell I just don’t understand the coaching strategy. 90% of the battle is figuring out what adjustments to make that will work, when you find them, why go away? It just doesn’t make any sense at all

Why not shoot the open 3 Kai to tie the game? You played great young man, but you have to stop taking steps and shoot open shots. UNCW definitely played well and has good talent. And, I think that they played more like a team today.
