Interesting Monty Article
Quote:8 long years later, Mark Montgomery brings Northern Illinois to Michigan State
You can hear every day of Mark Montgomery’s journey as head basketball coach at Northern Illinois in his weathered voice. The realities, the resignation, the sliver of remaining optimism fighting to peek through.
He sounds a thousand miles from his days with Michigan State’s basketball program, less than a decade ago.
Eight years is a lifetime in the Mid-American Conference. More than one lifetime usually. It’s a league that lures idealistic young coaches and spits them out, wiser and worn.
“I don’t regret leaving. I wanted to be a head coach,” Montgomery, 48, said last week, ahead of this Saturday’s Northern Illinois-MSU game at Breslin Center, his first trip back since leaving Tom Izzo’s staff in 2011. “I looked forward to running my own program and one day winning the MAC championship and getting us to the NCAA tournament.”

When Izzo says “a school like that,” I assume he means one where a trusted team doctor DOESN’T assault hundreds of female athletes. Given that, I’ll take NIU any time.

As sad as this was to read hearing our current head coach say he wish he was at Michigan State still, the arrogance and condescending talk from Izzo is even more aggravating
Both came off bad. I was really disappointed to read some of Monty's comments. If you're that unhappy just leave. Almost felt like he is staying here for the paycheck and no other reason.

Monty thinks he made a bad decision coming here. Since it will be awhile before a head coaching gig will come up again, he will ride this out till the end.

The second and third time I read this , the worse it sounds. Everything positive in his frame of mind is in past tense. Hard to spin this. I think Porter/Wilson dagger was his death nail

I remember the last time Porter walked off the court for NIU. Was not hard to predict he was done. That said NIU needs to schedule some more money games to be able to let Monty go. Would live to see a new young coach come in a bring some success. I will root for the Huskies but hard to pull for Monty or any coach from Izzo tree

I would suggest to Monty that he bow out just before the game and take a courtside seat and cheer for his beloved Alma mater. Huskies can then move on and so could he.

This article ended my season ticket renewal for next season. Next year will be first time since I left college that I will not have season tickets for basketball or football

RE: Interesting Monty Article
My take on the article:
1. The MAC is a melting pot of coaches. Those who can coach move on to P5 gigs, those who don't get fired and go back to being an assistant coach. (All of us at NIU know this). Or you stay a long time if you are winning an acceptable number of games and at the end of a coaching career (like Joe Novak, and Ohio football coach Frank Solich)
2. MM has survived here a long time without being a winner. (He should not have been here over 5 years, imo)
3. The excuse for him is that he has had good players leave/transfer. (This is Tom Izzo's excuse for MM )
4. The end of the road is indeed coming (he will not be here another 8 years).
5. And based on the following quote, I infer MM has indicated he made a mistake by coming here for whatever reason. He may blame the administration, the fans, or himself for losing, but that is not totally clear. See how he says "I just didn't listen". He doesn't come out and say it directly, but that is how I infer it...
“I just tell him, if you’re going to take another job, especially a head coaching job, just make sure all the the boxes are checked — good administration, good program, somewhere you can win, somewhere you can see your family being happy,” said Montgomery, who interviewed several places before the NIU offer. “Don’t just take a job to say you’re a head coach. People used to tell me and I just didn’t listen. Sometimes the job you have is a better job.”
MM got his chance with NIU basketball, but it is time to give someone else a chance.....

Yes that's the damning paragraph. To me, these comments from MM are clearly arising from a situation that has been allowed to go on too long. The word "accountability" is a big one hovering over this athletic program. Noone is being held accountable for anything from coaches all the way to the top, and that's where "poor me" attitudes arise. People point the finger everywhere else but themselves. Ownership is the first step to solving problems

Assuming professional journalism and that those are exact quotes from both Monty and Izzy, wow...just wow.
Little discouraged on the recruit well and then they leave statement. Maybe they just don’t recruit well. What could have been if Porter/Wilson/etc were the “right” recruits. At some point after seven or eight years you should be able to get the right recruits.
Very sad article on so many levels.

These words are normally from a coach who has left a job which makes me think almost 100 percent Monty is about done here

"About done here" or not, he has the team playing some pretty good ball just as we get into the MAC schedule.

The only damper to this little mini hot stretch is that this is the apex for NIU for awhile, its a complete start over next season. And bad luck once again for NIU as they are peaking when the rest of the league is as good as it has ever been.

RE: Interesting Monty Article
Around here it isn't even so much that they haven't gotten to the NCAA tournament. It's more that they haven't been close - not a single year over .500 in conference.
I don't know that I blame Monty for Maric leaving and that was a loss. But he has lost too many others.
We'll see what happens this year, off to a good start so far in conference.

Have we even been to the quarterfinals in the MAC tourney? It's gross...
I'd have to think he'd need 20 wins and at least a semifinal showing to somehow save himself. And man I'd love to see it happen! But Monty's teams and 'finishing the season strong' haven't been a thing.
