Arrest of Chinese princess exposes China’s plan for World Domination
https://nypost.com/2018/12/22/how-arrest...tion-plot/

Canadian nationals are being arrested in China in retaliation.

Why?

Because China was caught transacting with Iran illegally and laundering that money.

But that isn’t skin deep.

It’s about controlling communication worldwide so to be able to have a leg up economically and militarily.

Innocent enough.

RE: Arrest of Chinese princess exposes China’s plan for World Domination
Chinese are not bent for world domination, far from it. They're too diverse a people to work on an effort like that requiring great national will and cooperation. The Japanese-if they had those numbers and that much geography-yes. China-no.

This is not to say China won't be a major player, if they can reform their economy. They will-IF they can reform their economy.

I've been to China 8-10 times. Fascinating people. But they've gone pretty much as far as they're going to go with a centrally planned economy. President Xi knows that, but there are too many old communists who want to hold onto their power and are fighting his reforms. It'll be interesting to see whose going to win over the next few years.

If you are talking about the average Zhang or Zhung Doe you are correct. Much like the average American, clueless and in their own little world.

China has several hundred ethnic groups as I am told by friends who both live and have lived while working there. One in far NE China and the other in S.W China. So diverse in this sense too. But the power is held by those who have Han ancestry. They don't look favorably on others.

The government, that only has turnover by death (natural or execution) or dismissal to re-education camps does have that goal and is clearly executing on it. To state otherwise is naive.

Domination not in the sense that every other country is enslaved but is subservient to China economically, politically and culturally.

Internal opposition in China is either executed, arrested and literally enslaved or is unashamedly marginalized by clear and direct policy and enactment of that policy.

That's the home team.

For us in the other uniforms the Chinese aren't stupid enough to start a war, yet. Certainly not a world war. But like Russia, will lop off a Crimea, Japanese Island or two and has eye on former Soviet State.

The company in the article is looking to "own" the communications market. Not for the $ persay though they'll take that but for the ability to out flank, blackmail and dominate others by way of the intel it provides.

I work at 2 Government Labs here in the states and work with numerous Chinese Nationals and Russians. I don't fear a one but then some suddenly disappear and when I ask their compatriots the answers are .... dubious.

I also have 2 sets of friends one who still lives and works there and a couple with children who were given 48 hours to leave. Both entirely different perspectives and experiences. Totaling 35 years in China between the 2. The ones expelled were simply so because they were Christian missionaries working with the Uyghurs. Most are nominal Muslum. But being discriminated against and with some radicalized the entire group is targeted. But anything or anyone that isnt "on board" is dealt with harshly. The expulsion is nothing. Several of their friends who had converted to Christianity are still doing hard time for simply "believing".

BP, you're well educated and traveled. But like too many others don't get it.

The Han Chinese are the 'old communists' for the most part. They are the largest ethnic group in China and yes, they do hold the political power.

What is working against the old guard is the new economy. There is no middle-class in China yet, but there will be in 15-20 years-IF the economy continues growing the way it has been. And that's the crux of the matter.

The people have put up with the heavy hand of central planning and the lack of freedom of speech on certain topics because the government has delivered on the economy. Right now most Chinese want to keep improving their status of living, they are well aware they are still second world as far as that goes.

But, as I noted, they've gone just about as far as they can with their archaic government systems and planned economy. Xi recognizes that, that's why he is pushing economic reforms-not because he is a 'nice guy'. There is no future for things the way they are.

The people are well aware much of their government is 'corrupt', they admit to it. They've put up with it because the economy has been very good for the most part.

There is a real battle ongoing in China right now between those who want that nation to assume it's place in the world economy with all the benefits that entails-and the old communists who are terrified to lose their power. The people I meet don't talk about it much, but you can tell where they stand on the topic. GM China employees have been getting big bonuses the past few years because our growth in China has been so dramatic. We sell a million more vehicles/year in China then we do in the USA.

Finally, you can't judge the liberalism in China by US standards. Remember, this is a society which has NEVER enjoyed a real democracy. The autocrats today are just a reflection on the history of China from 2500 BC until even the Sun Yat Sen reforms in the 1920's. A line of autocrats going way back. The country needs to curtail government power or they will never achieve a first world economy. That's the challenge.

RE: Arrest of Chinese princess exposes China’s plan for World Domination
We agree more than not. You are correct on the internal dynamics.

What we appear to differ on is how it plays out.

The reaction by the Chi-comms is indicative of their perspective. They cheat, lie and steal. They got caught at a very high level and now are embarking on playing “chicken” with Canada. An easy target who wants to deliver on tar sand production to anyone who will pay. China is willing to and the US vacillates. So I can see China intimidating Canada here like they did earlier with the Obama Admin who indicted Chinese for like but out of fear of retaliation never followed through.

However the stakes are higher as this criminal is of much higher rank. The heir to this favored Chinese Communication power. Much to close for comfort in Beijing.

Those in power and that is absolute power, will not give it up, period. The new guard is not interested in playing fair and opening up opportunity for others as “some” in the west idealize. The opportunity is only available for those who toe the line.

The growing middle class is on a strict diet of central committee. Again, toe the line or lose your toes or worse.

The situation in China is serious, as the above posters have highlighted.

That said, it's Christmas Eve, and I want to be a smart-azz. The posts make me think of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers....

I talk to my Chinese colleagues and try and get a gage on things over there. For instance, how many of them play the Chinese stock markets? Not too many, from my sample survey. So who is playing the Shanghai Bourse? Mostly foreigners, apparently. So when we say the Trump tariffs have hurt the Chinese equities, you have to take into account who is being hurt.

Of course Chinese consumers have been hurt-prices are going up, salaries have stopped appreciating and good jobs are less plentiful. They have been hurt by the tariffs, no question.

My gut 'feel' is Xi supports reforms. I think he has reasonably good rapport with Trump and he knows China has to change. How much he buys into the concept of less central planning is anybody's guess, hopefully he recognizes the limits of that approach.

Interesting times. We have a lot of Chinese engineers working at our facilities on joint programs. They are exposed to the west on a daily basis, they recognize their own shortcomings. Word is getting around back there about how the rest of the world tolerates differences of opinion from the 'company line'. In summation, there is far more opposition to the Chicoms than most Americans know. How strident that opposition gets and how soon it becomes public is the question.

Agree about the “moving” parts.

But the time it will take in such a huge country where folks are 100% dependent on the central gov’t, who keeps and holds all the cards is still a couple to several generations away.

Therefore, the threats are not and will not be abated one iota.
The “game” is still on. Winner take all.
