RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
Conference USA and ODU need to be a leader for once and stop scheduling FCS teams.

RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
I would play 1 FCS game per year to have better bowl chances.

Your assuming that game is replaced with an automatic loss. Schedule a beatable MAC, Sunbelt or AAC team would be far better than an FCS team.

Between the shift in MBB scheduling policy (however small, it is a start) and this news on the FB scheduling front, it seems like we're getting a bit more aggressive as far as advancing our interests. Very good as long as we don't overplay our hand

Then you would have to give them a home and home deal. You would then lose the pretty much guaranteed win and a guaranteed home game every year. I wish we would drop them too because yay we had a home game and beat VMI but who really enjoyed watching that game. Halfway through the second I started pulling for VMI to score. I'm just pointing out the reason from a Coaches and ADs point of view.

Not assuming anything. We arent competing for a national title so a win over FCS or low level FBS doesnt make a difference to me. Its a home game and hopefully an easy win. Schedule your NSU, VMI, W&M, etc.

Having an FCS game improves our chances at a bowl game, which is one of our two major goals (along with winning conference)

People forget that scheduling is a business decision. The only reason you'd give the FCS game up is if you start taking buy games versus the P5 that make more money than a home game. Home and homes with MAC/Sun Belt teams aren't going to do that.

Right, but we are paying FCS teams to come here so I think the cost could offset the travel cost to go to an FBS team.

How much do you think a MAC school would pay us for the road portion of a Home and Home? Because it aint much and a lot (all?) of it goes towards covering our travel expenses.

We only paid VMI $320k last season. To cover that cost, we just needed to sell 12.8k tickets priced at $25 a piece. Throw in concessions, apparel sales and additional ticket revenue (suites, club level) and you're sitting pretty, even with the expense of gameday operations.

Agreed. I believe that while it might be exciting, we have greatly over-scheduled for the next 3 seasons or so. There is no way ODU can play 3 ACC teams on our schedule and still hope to have a legit chance at a bowl with how our teams have been historically. The FCS game is important for bowl eligibility. If we were UCF or Boise State... sure. But we aren't there yet. Theres a pretty good chance ODU may not see another bowl until 2022, which would be nearly as sad as our disappearance from the NCAA tournament.

While I agree that we should keep an FCS team on our schedule I do like that we have VT in a long term deal, and appointments with some other ACC and AAC teams as well. If for any reason we find ourselves searching for a new HC anytime soon I think having teams like that on the schedule would help attract the type of coach we want. That, and of course adequate compensation.

Agree. One of the many challenges with C-USA is that we have limited bowl tie ins. There is no guarantee that every 6-6 or better team from the conference gets to go to a bowl. To be safe you need to be at least 7-5 which gets much more difficult if we go 1-3 in our OOC schedule.

Looks like the VT and ECU break up is getting nasty with legal teams involved. VT cancelled all their future football games at ECU. VT to host 2 FCS teams next year. Hope the break up can get ECU on our schedule more.

I suppose I could do a google search, but why are they breaking up?

ECU cancelled this years game due to the hurricane and instead of making it up later, played someone else (NC State) instead.

That is what caused VT to schedule a buy game with Marshall. They weren’t sure at that time if they would have enough wins for bowl eligibility.

ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
Talking to someone last night it was a pretty bad move by ECU. Apparently VT reserved room for 2 weeks for all of ecu team a they could come early and practice and then stay and practice if need be before their trip to Florida. Ecu cited weather concerns about travel to Blacksburg but then turned around and left the next day to Florida for a week. From talking to a couple vt folks last night vt is displeased with how it was handled. Ecu made vt pay for the game citing weather was out of their control and then scheduled NC state and is getting that money too. I'm sure there are 2 sides to the story but that's what some vt ppl told me as the know.
