Passing game efficiency is something that App has struggled with. Run right, run left, jet sweep fake left pitch right toss back, throw to Sutton. Fake right, throw deep to Sutton, fake right, H-Back chip screen/wheel option, fake left throw post/dig/flag to Sutton.

App could use more passing game diversity considering the receivers on the roster. It hurt that App couldn't run the ball at Southern and the lack of diversity in the passing game created a huge hurdle of just basicness. Total, and complete, basic offense. Everything is predicated on the run and App simply being BFS than everyone. Against teams that they weren't, you saw the output of the offense diminish greatly.

Many of the old school App fans will get their wish of App going under center for short yardage situations as well. If Thomas were to bulk up, and actually be 6'2 (I suspect he's 6' on the dot), this could help propel him into a NFL camp. Similar skill set to Taylor Heinickie.

Good, we have the best QB in the conference. We almost blew the conference championship because Scott refused to let him pass. When you have a QB as dangerous as Thomas, and receivers as great as Hennigan and Sutton you should be passing a lot.

Pretty hard to pass in the rain though. :(

It's hard to pass when the run game isn't working and you run three or four primeval routes. App's offense, without the ability to run, was very predictable and the Southern game showed that.

Hopefully he brings some offensive efficiency back to Boone and promotes another defensive position coach from Satterfield/Woody's staff to take over the defense. If App can find a way to move the ball, at least at a decent enough clip to have less 3 and outs with continuity of defensive performance, it could be a dangerous team in 2019.

Boy.. this offense he ran at NC State was sure dependent on the pass.

Check out the attempts from Ryan Finley:

All the best offenses at the pro and college levels now pass more.
It's just the way the game is. Passing is MUCH more difficult to stop than running is. You scheme to get the ball to your playmakers in space. That's what Eli will do and we're gonna be hard to stop.

UCF, Memphis, and App State?

Zac Thomas....isn't a pocket passer, per say. Obviously his job will become to throw more from the pocket, but he doesn't seem to have had an issue with that. Perhaps the threat to run would only enhance what App will now be running?

And assuming App's success remains the same, I doubt this guy is in Boone for very long.

Brian Harsin's best offense at Boise appears to be when he was an OC Brett Rypien's freshman year and Dave Doeren's offenses seemed to be better for sure after he took over.

The big question to me is if he'll keep in place at least some of Scott Satterfield's offense in play and run it well. I know App fans will probably disagree and take issue with this, but there will be growing pains if he plans on throwing it 30-40 times a game with their current roster.

A lot of talk this year about Satt not utilizing our WR corp enough. It's hard to tell by the numbers, but we have a ton of talent in that group.

I think it is a good hire. I don't think there is any evidence yet that he will be a great HC but he may very well be. I know that Bryan Harsin is making a lot of money solely because he handed the reigns to Drinkwitz in 2013. Harsin should send him a check every year.

Seems like the kind of guy who might benefit from an older coach on staff who is a disciplinarian type.

Decent hire on paper? Probably. has a lot more to do than his offensive numbers though. Staff, schematics, philosophy, program management, and recruiting chops would be big factors in how good it is and no ones knows that yet but it’s a “home run” already. You guys crack me up.

You crack us up by saying that we called him a home run, most are saying they are comfortable with the hire not that he is apps new goat.

Well recruiting can be spoken for as he already knows NC SC GA well. Which is where we recruit. Half of our team is from GA (at least it appears as such). As for the staff and others yes that is yet to be seen. He's good enough to beat GaSo in Boone next year and beat UNC.

It has been a rough week and a half let us say what we want about our hire then when or if he sucks you can say told you so or whatever you are trying to accomplish. We are fans which means fanatics we can say things that are nuts and crazy.

Zac threw attempts for + 30 twice in 2018

Once against Penn State but was down by 3 TDs and the other was a comfortable win against Texas St.

Now he has a coach that threw it on average 38 times in 2018.

This will be a different offensive philosophy for sure and will take some adjusting. Run first offense to a pass first offense.

Interesting note....

Coach Drunk was Ryan Finley's OC back at Boise State in 2015 and transferred with him over to NC State.

Most of Drunk's success is tied to a potential 1st round draft pick.

Edit: Good point EigenEagle. Wiki's are not that fleshed out.

So unless we have a first round draft pick he wont be successful? Is that what you all are trying to spin around now?

HAHA

What about at ARK state? Was there a first round pick there? I do believe he was successful there.

The question is how much of an impact on the defensive performance since 2015 did Ivey have? If the answer is a lot, Drink needs to keep him around. Continuity on that side of the ball will be paramount to the teams success in 2019 while the offense likely has some early growing pains. Preferable two weeks of growing pains while still winning and rolling in to Chapel Hill when things finally click.
