Bottom line. If you're going to take cherry picked anecdotal evidence you can make any argument you want about almost every team in the country.

I've been avoiding UC basketball this season, so I'm not sure what's going on here... but considering that this thread is still going, I can only assume that the Crosstown Shootout has been going on for 78 hours.

This is a good post. Let's stipulate that UC has an outstanding defense, indeed one that has been consistently among the best in college basketball. Let's say that we get to the Elite 8 or the Final Four and we play a Gonzaga or a Duke or a Kansas or some other offensively talented team. Let's say we hold them to 72 points or 74 or 76. Can our offensively challenged team score enough to beat them? Likely not. Unless our offensive skill level improves substantially, we are unlikely to get to a place where we can have a realistic chance to compete for a national championship.

Still remember feeling depressed about that one for weeks. But I was still relatively immature in life and was just starting 'on my own' with not many responsibilities so sports still ruled my life.

Last year's loss brought me very close to that feeling I had back in '06. After going through the upset with X in '96, Miles Simon, Iowa State, Northern Arizona, Kenyon, etc, Nevada takes the cake. It was embarrassing to be a UC fan after giving up that type of lead. It was brutal. Mick just doesn't have the ability to calm team down.

I actually laughed after the Nevada game. Basically chuckled and though "UC screwed it up again."

I watch and root and cheer and hope for great things from UC athletics. I do not, however, expect them anymore.

I also cried when Kenyon broke his leg, but the Nevada game takes the cake for me just because of where I was in life at the time.

I was at a bar in San Diego watching the Nevada game with my 4 year old daughter. We're the only UC fans in the bar, both fully decked out in UC gear (she's got a UC cheerleader uniform that she loves). The bar manager (who was actually a student of mine at the time) actually had the gall to come over to discuss my bill during the last 20 seconds of the game and wouldn't leave me alone.

My daughter ends the game by telling me that she wants to be a fan of a different team, because she wants to root for a team that wins. Grrrrrr! Then on the drive home, she started doing delightful cheers of "down the drive" but instead of saying "UC!" at the end, she'd say "We Lost!" Creative little bastard.

That is some serious self control. My kids would have been left on the side of the road. They would have been lucky if I slowed down to less than 25 when I threw them out the car. 03-lmfao

theres no doubt you have to score to beat the really good teams. we still run an older style offense instead of the new age style of shoot a 3 or shoot a layup.

the game has evolved a lot the past 10-15 years but its easy to see why. here is a list of our guys shooting % on 2 point shots that aren't dunks or at the rim.

Jenifer - 25%
Cumberland - 37.7%
Scott - 38.7%
Keith - 39.3%
Cane - 58.1%

Last year

Clark - 38.9%
Evans - 36.8%
Cumberland 38.7%
Kwash - 52.5%
Broome - 31.7%
Jenifer - 33.3%

2 point jumpers just aren't good shots. our offense has us taking a lot of them.

to be great you have to be great on both sides. we are amazing on defense, offense does have to come around.

Interesting that Cane and Kyle Washington are particularly adept 2 point shooters.

Cane is 40.6% if you combine the 2 years. he has 1 less make this year on 29 less attempts.

Interesting stuff. It seems to me, though, that the NBA has evolved much more on offense than college has (the reverse of football, where college is innovating and the pros piggyback it). You say that our offense takes a lot of 2 point jumpers, and that rings true based on my own observations. Do you know what percentage of UC's shots are 2 pointers not at the rim and how they compare to others and particularly to other good offenses?

we are 334 out of 353 in % of shots that are 2 point jumpers at 34.4%. we are 343 out of 353 in % of shots that are 3 pointers at 27.6%.

Just a quick glance I see North Carolina (321), Kentucky (310), and Tennessee (297) in % of 2 point shots being jumpers

quoting myself here because i just went back and read this and i see it can be confusing. the stats consider 2 point jumpers bad so the higher the percent the lower on the list you rank. so 334th out of 353 means we shoot the 20th most 2 point jumpers. 3s are considered good so 343 out of 353 means we shoot the 11th fewest 3s in the country.

Yep, I didn't realize at first but this was his 2nd incident. The first incident happened as a minor and none of the details were released and that's what X released his scholarship for. Clearly he didn't learn his lesson, and sounds like he was just a psycho. What a shame.

I know some Cov Cath people. Told me a few years ago this kid was a bad egg. Would not let their son associate with him. Some people, regardless of socio-economic status, are just inherently flawed.

RE: Crosstown Shootout
So the UC women beat X pretty decisively yesterday to earn a sweep (men and women) this season. Congratulations to players and coaches. I'm pretty impressed with our new coach.

Of course halfway through the day on Monday and Cincinnati.com doesn't even have a score, much less a story. They still have their preview stories posted.

I know women's college basketball isn't a big deal in this city, but this is one game each year that usually gets some coverage. Only when X wins I suppose.
