Exclamation Did you know...
I created this thread to lay some ACC football factoids on you. Please add some of your own if you have any...

Did you know that despite Alabama's current run of championship games and New York Six Bowls, they are still 10 years away from tying the run of top 5 finishes that the Florida State Seminoles achieved under Bobby Bowden?

That's a lot of years, Nick!

Exclamation RE: Did you know...
The last time the Clemson Tigers lost a non-conference game to a team other than Alabama in the playoffs was back on August 30th, 2014, when they lost to the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.

The last non-conference loss to a team not currently a member of the SEC was way back on 1/4/2012 - the infamous Orange Bowl loss to West Virginia.

Since that game, Clemson has gone 17-5 versus all power five non-conference opponents...

...the Syracuse Orange football team hasn't lost a bowl game in 14 years; of course, it hasn't played in a bowl game in 5 years! The site of their last bowl loss: Orlando, FL, in the Champ Sports Bowl (now known as the Camping World Bowl). The opponent who beat them, however, was from the ACC - Georgia Tech to be precise - so no chance of that happening this year. In fact, the last time Syracuse faced WVU it was in the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl, which the Orange won easily, 38-14. The last time the 'Cuse lost to the 'Eers in football: Oct 10th, 2009 - 9 years ago.

...when it was called the BBVA Compass Bowl, the Pitt Panthers played in the bowl in Birmingham, AL for 3 years in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013)?

Wake Forest is the first current ACC team since 2013 Pitt to play in the bowl in Birmingham (now called simply the Birmingham Bowl). The Deacs are the first since 2008 NC State to play as a member of the ACC (the Wolfpack were the first and, prior to this season, the only ACC team to play there). NC State and Pitt are a combined 1-3 in the Birmingham bowl game.

Syracuse turned down the Rose Bowl after the 1915 season. They had just come back from a three game road trip out West and didn't have funds to do it again.

It's true.

They had gotten left out in the conference realignment of 1912.

They got stuck in the stagecoach conference and Western Union then lowballed them on their telegraph contract. They were only making $75 a year in TG money and Notre Dame took their spot in the Rose Bowl because they had their own $500 a year deal with Wells Fargo.

Pitt turned down the 1938 Rose Bowl after players voted against going. The vote had to do with disputes with the athletic administration not providing traveling funds to the team (the coach had paid for them out of his own pocket the year prior) and slowly imposing policies of athletic de-emphasis. You also have to remember that it took about a week by train to get to California (the train would stop and the team would get out and have ad hoc practices in whatever field was available close to the train). It was not exactly an ideal traveling situation. Bowls were also definitively perceived as exhibition games, and Pitt had already been named 1937 National Champions by the AP and others. The year prior, it had won the 1937 Rose Bowl 21-0, and had previously played in 3 others. The fallout continued, as the following season would be the last for Pitt's all-time most legendary coach, 5-time national championship winner Jock Sutherland, as he was forced out in order to ram through additional policies of deemphasis. The 40s were ugly for Pitt, because they didn't back off the schedule strength despite eliminating scholarships and recruiting and restricting practices.

But the sad year was 1963 when Pitt finished 9-1 and ranked 3rd in the nation (with wins over Notre Dame, UCLA, Cal, Washington, WVU, Miami, Army, Syracuse, and PSU) and the only loss coming at #2 Navy with Roger Staubach, yet received no bowl invitation. The final game of the season vs PSU was pushed back a week because the Kennedy assassination. Bowls, which handed out their invites sometimes weeks before the end of the season, passed on Pitt because they were worried Pitt would lose to PSU. The 1963 team has since been known as the "No Bowl Team". Hard to imagine that today with how the bowl system works now.

...last year FSU played what could be the toughest schedule in college football history. The evidence:
...Their opponents were a combined 87-46
...They only played ONE team with a losing record all year (Louisville)
...FSU played 2 of the 4 CFP playoff teams - half! - for the 2nd year in a row
...FSU faced 5 consecutive top 25 ranked teams* - they'd never played more than 3 in a row before.
Quite possibly the toughest schedule EVER.

...with FSU's loss to Florida to end the season 5-7 and thus miss bowl eligibility, that leaves Virginia Tech with the undisputed longest active bowl streak in the nation at 26.

To put that into perspective, since the Hokies' bowl streak began...
...Alabama has missed out bowl-eligibility 5 times
...Ohio State has missed out twice
...Oklahoma has missed out four times
...virtually every NCAA football player in the P5 was born

I don't think so.

The current record of Pitt's FBS opponents:105-51(0.671); or with the FCS team added, 108-59 (0.647).

By comparison, FSU's FBS opponents were 88-46 (.657); or including their FCS team (.648).

The Sagarin rating for Pitt's schedule is 76.8 (or ranked 3rd); FSU's is 75.75 (ranked 10th). At least three other Strength of Schedule rankings (every one I checked and four in total) had FSU behind Pitt.

There were 6 common opponents: Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Miami, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Clemson.*
They both played at home vs a 9-win, in-state, non-conference FBS opponent: Pitt vs PSU and FSU vs Florida.
They both played a 2 win ACC opponent: Pitt @UNC and FSU @Louisville

Differences in ACC opponents were Pitt played Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Duke; while FSU played BC and NC State.

Pretty similar until you get to a very major difference in the non-conference schedule: Pitt's non-FBS opponent was @UCF, while FSU played at home vs Northern Illinois.

FSU's FCS opponent, Samford, was a better team than Pitt's FCS opponent, Albany, if you consider that of consequence, but Pitt will also face Stanford in its bowl game.

Pitt's schedule this year may be the first schedule in history where a program will have played 12 bowl teams in a single season.

Pitt also played 3 teams that finished the regular season undefeated (@UCF, @Notre Dame, and Clemson), which might also be a record.

Conclusion: FSU's schedule was not only not the toughest ever, it wasn't even the toughest this season, nor was it the toughest among ACC members.

*Pitt went 3-3 vs the common opponents while FSU went 1-5.

That's not crazy, Paco. Seems like Pitt is always near the top in SOS.
