RE: Boca Raton Bowl
Greeting Blazer fans, NIU huskie fan here. I come in peace.

Looking forward to playing you guys in Boca. An hour drive for me, and I'll be there. Hopefully a lot of NIU fans will want a couple of days out of the Siberian DeKalb winters and show up for the game.

Should be a good game. Our QB, Childers, has been erratic all year. Some flashes of being good, but mostly mediocre. After we won the MAC our offense played 10 quarters of the worst football you can imagine, losing the final two regular season games. Something happened in the 2nd half of the MAC championship, and Childers suddenly played like a Heisman finalist. I hope that continues.

The NIU defense has been consistently good, if not great. Iowa and FSU put a hurting on them, But the D has kept in competitive in most of our games, in spite of our offense's inability to move the ball.

I had followed UAB after what happened to your team. Glad you came back. Sounds like the Big Boys didn't like any competition from the upstart.

Flights: Southwest airlines flies from B'ham to FLL through Orlando which I recommend.
Also there is a shuttle that runs from FLL to Boca raton for $26 each way per person.
https://goairportshuttle.com/

Of course uber is always available for about $35 each way. You may want to call hotels and see if they will run a shuttle to the game.

Thank you!

The google calls it an 11-hour drive. You think that's legit (accounting for traffic and all)?

I used to live in Miami, and Boca is about 45 minutes north of Miami. 11 hours is about right. Prepare to pay the tolls on the Florida Turnpike. It's annoying, but it's well worth it. Taking another route will add time to the trip.

I'll be driving down with my crew!!

If you are coming down come down on Sunday instead of Monday youll be glad you did. The traffic on both 95 and turnpike is far less on sunday afternoon than Monday

11 hours is a bit on the shy side with traffic around Atlanta and Orlando.

Get off the Florida Turnpike at Ft Pierce and get on I-95 South. 95 and the Turnpike run parallel going South. It will save some money. 95 to the FAU Exit, it will now take you right to the stadium.

http://bocasurfcam.com/

It really depends on whether you are going to your stadium or your hotel. If you are going to the stadium from 95 Spanish River Blvd exit.

If you are going to a hotel in Boca it will be either Yamato, Glades or Palmetto Park road.

If you are driving and want to save a few bucks I would suggest Deerfield Beach hotels. If you are going to spend $100 a night anyway, spend $150 a night and stay
at the Deerfield beach wyndham or embassy suites which are right on the ocean!

If you want to stay near the stadium Fairfield inn and suites on airport road in boca (you cant fly into Boca airport unless you have a pilots license). Has rooms right now for $99 a night with free breakfast. Its down the street from a movie theater and Boomers.

I laugh when I read all the people complaining about the Bowl location and time. Judging from the attendance at your conference championship game, I guess a Saturday drive to Tennessee was also inconvenient and outside your budget. Would you like to swap with us and play your Bowl game in Detroit?

Looking at their (NI) Roster look a lot like like a Big 10 Team.

Carey has not been popular among the rank and file Huskie fans. His numbers, however, make him look like a superstar. 52-29 overall in 5 years, 38-10 in conference, and 5-2 against the big10. One of those b10 loses was a one touchdown loss to #1 OSU. He is 0-5 in bowls, which is odd.

The offensive play calling is what causes the most heartache for Huskie fans, Last year against Duke NIU call for a trick play, on a punt from our own end zone. The punter passed to a WR....and this was a planned call, not a try to salvage a botched punt. It failed, of course. A JV high school coach wouldn't have called that play.

The O play calling has been too conservative in many fan's minds, but his overall record does speak for itself.

To his credit, this NIU defense is one of the best ever. They've carried the team this season, with little help from the offense, with the exception of the MACC game last week.

I see UAB lost big time to Middle Tennessee in the regular season, then beat them for the league title. Must have felt good to get that payback.

December 18th is also Pumpkinhead's 65th birthday.

Maybe it will be an even more special day.

RE: Boca Raton Bowl
A lot of the disappointment (to me) is the dismal showing in bowl games. Also, our second year with Jordan Lynch at QB we managed to lose by a fair amount to Bowling Green in the championship game and then lose the bowl game also. We lost by quite a bit to Marshall in another game, and the team didn't show up at all on offense or defense when we played Boise. Then lost by 20 or so against Duke last year. We just don't look prepared, or perhaps in bowl games where there is more time between games, the other team's coaches prepare better for us than we do for them. Whatever it is, we generally have not been competitive.

Since Carey won a MAC title with his own players, we can't criticize him for that - although the MAC was down this year. After our 2010-2014 years NIU fans have had high expectations that are hard to meet.

Two things we learned last year against Ohio. MAC teams are big and will punch you in the mouth. NIU is no exception. There will be 2 very good defenses out there on the field. It will not be for the faint of heart.

Well that's an apples to pomegranates comparison. Georgia Tech is about to attend it's 46th bowl. Looking at the list quite a few of those were in pretty easy driving distance from Atlanta. Just recently were reasonable drives to Jacksonville ('16) and Nashville ('13).

It's going to be a great game and we're gonna kick ass. I just wish more UAB fans and students could be there. They fought and deserve it too.
