Looks like they were trying following in the footsteps of Ga State (Bill Curry) and UTSA (Larry Coker).

To be fair, Miles was probably just acting as a consultant to assist them in the process of deciding the feasibility of adding football with no intention of becoming their football coach. I mean, other than looking for a another coaching job, Miles did not have anything else to do back then.

I think this is just fake news.

What the heck? Was Miles our Secret Santa, or just another advisor? I surely hope that we didn't pin all our hopes on this one guy!

Agree. UTA couldn’t possibly believe Les Miles was remotely interested in resurrecting their football program. He had bigger fish to fry. Case Closed.

But wait: What makes this different from the Bill Curry or Larry Coker situations? If Giles, Briles, Mack Brown, or any one of a number of former Texas Tech head coaches wanted to really make a mark, I can't think of a taller hill to climb than starting UT Arlington football. And what a legacy it would be for a coach to create a winner at this level, essentially starting from zero! What a bonanza it would be for the Sun Belt to have games hosted in the DFW media market. The fourth largest university in Texas is more than capable of supporting football. It's just a question of when.

Les Miles was keeping his options open. Who knew that the Kansas would ask him to resurrect/build their program.

Not sure that comparing UTA hoops attendance (for example) to a school that finishes four games or so back of UTA provides much insight.

The historic records while interesting aren't particularly instructive given that virtually no one under age 40 has memories of UTA football.

UTA wants football and can fund it at a level that would provide an opportunity to be competitive without harming the existing sports, then I'm all for it. I just don't see any compelling reason for UTA to add football unless there is strong support and commitment from alumni because UTA certainly doesn't appear to be struggling finding quality students in large quantities.

UTA Arlington can announce football in January and start a $30 million capital campaign for the stadium which should seat at least 60,000 to start.

In the meantime, UTA could increase the student fees by $6 per semester hour which we would be about $72 per semester. All students would get tickets each home game.

In three years the amount collected would be over 27 million dollars. That would bring the total to over 57 million in three years. Start football with a D2 schedule as Independent in 2022; then FCS Independent in 2023; and the FBS Sun Belt schedule in 2024.

UTA should play its FCS games against Texas schools to keep down cost. Play only Texas State as FCS within the conference in 2023. Get games at UNT and UTSA.

After that UTA stadium should be packed with at least 4 home games a year.

Possible future FCS out of conference schedule for UTA. Based on 8 game conference schedule

2023
1. @ Prairie View AM
2. Texas Southern
3. @ Sam Houston State
4. Central Arkansas
5. Southeastern Louisiana (Homecoming Game)
6. @New Mexico State
7. @ Texas State
8. Kennesaw State 04-cheers
9. @ Wyoming
10. Florida A&M
11. @ Houston (probably homecoming for UH)
12. Abilene Christian

2024
1. @ UT San Antonio
2. North Texas
3. @ UT El Paso
4. Prairie View AM

Yes, bring on the SWAC and Southland Conference! Tarleton State, TAMU Commerce and Lamar would be good old rivals to include in the transitional seasons. Perhaps Rice, instead of UH would be less painful, as well.

This is a good plan overall, but that fundraising campaign could be pretty hard to get done. I've not seen enough big money donors putting money into athletics, but I suppose that might be different for football. I would think we would need a face for the campaign though. I wouldn't see a lot of people wanting to hand over checks to our current AD.

These are all good ideas, even the SWAC games, since they are great at filling the stands. And forget any notion of using the old Rangers stadium as a home field. We know better than trying to do off-campus "home" games. Maybe after the team is full-time FBS (fifth year?), we can do the occasional revenue game in Jerry World. But we do not want to become like UTSA stuck in the AlamoDome, or Houston, formerly stuck in the Astrodome.

BTW - this thread is over six years old because we have not given up!

I hope y'all get a football team! I was almost a UTA Maverick, but when I found out how much ULM was offering in ACT scholarships I couldn't pass it up.

I dont see a problem playing those schools but some of the schedule is backwards. sam houston state, nmsu, houston, texas state and utsa should be home games because there would be very little local interest in games against kennesaw or uca or florida a-m etc. you would have a small turnout and those trying to gin up respectability and excitement over the new program would be starting out trying to fight the image of smalltimeness and lack of interest.

I kind of disagree. Having name opponents at home is nice, but not as important as winning at home. Maybe we can do home and home, playing BignameU away the first year, then hosting them a year or two later.
